100 years of the "Jungfrau" railway
100 Jahre Jungfraubahn
initiative of Adolf Guyer-Zeller (1839-1899), an industrial from Zurich, that the Jungfrau track railway
has been constructed, conveying passengers from the Petite Scheidegg (2061 metres high) to the Jungfraujoch
(3454 metres high). Obtaining authorization to construct in 1894, he had work started in June 1896. It
took nearly 16 years, i.e. 4 times the originally anticipated duration, to finish the project. On 1st of August
1912, the track has been opened to traffic for a length of 9.3 km and a difference of altitude of 1393 metres.
The numerous difficulties encountered did not permit to attain the top of the Jungfrau (4158 metres high), but
the terminal station of the Jungfraujoch still remains the highest railway station in Europe.
The cableway Cabrio. Tourists arriving in Stans and wanting to go up to the top of the
Stanserhorn (1898 metres high) can use a very new cable-car called Cabrio. The designers wanted a cabin like
a cabriolet having two levels. Thus, the passengers can largely appreciate the splendid view they discover during
the ride. The sustaining cables and the rolling elements are no more fixed above the cabin but on the sides. The
lower level is closed, whereas the upper level is open. The cable-car glides from a height of 711 metres to an
altitude of 1850 metres within 6 minutes and 15 seconds, with a capacity of 60 passengers.
Cabrio-Luftseilbahn.
1949.
Past…-…Present…-…Future. The difficulties encountered when searching pictured postcards
that could be suitable for the creation of maximum cards are growing from year to year. Pictured postcards are
no more so much wanted. So, small and medium size editors are unfortunately obliged to close down their
business. Their stock is destroyed. These modifications in behaviour have resulted in 2012 in the smallest
number of cards realized during the past ten years. Indeed, the association has proposed 19 maximum cards
for a total of 47 stamps issued in 2012. As far as possible, and on the condition that there is concordance
between the place and the possible illustration of the postmark, we have given preference to the first day
cancellation (F.D.) or to the variant of the first day cancellation date (f.d.), proposed by the Postage-stamps
and Philatelic Services of the Postal Administration, rather than to those of a local post-office. Further, we
have decided to somewhat reduce the number of maximum cards realized for the entire offer of topics, and even
more for some particular subjects which apparently are not collected, thus aiming at reducing the unsold stock.
We also report that some ancient Swiss maximum cards as well as some foreign realizations acquired by
means of exchange between maximaphily associations have been proposed for purchase in the internet under
www.ricardo.ch. Finally, and as far as possible, we have endeavoured to participate in information efforts on
the maximaphily by attending competitive - or not competitive - "Sales and Exhibition" events in Switzerland
and in France making small oral presentations or editing written articles intended for philatelists. - So far
for the past …
3
Now for the present time. We have somewhat changed the layout of our journal. Explanations on the
maximum card topics are much shorter than in the past, but they are given in French, German and English
language. This innovation is possible thanks to two unconditional partisans of the AMS, Mr. Ulrich Aebi
for the German part, and Mrs Helgard Ramillon for the English text. We are grateful for their help which
largely contributes to a wider spread and knowledge of the activities of our Association. Further, concerned
about the large number of false maxicards on sale, we have dedicated two pages to recall the FIP standards of
maximum cards.
With respect to the future, we have hopes and projects. As for the hopes, we would like to find more
easily commercial pictured postcards to facilitate different realizations, and also to see new names of
maximaphilists at the Swiss "Sales and Exhibition" events. If the journal "La Loupe" (the magnifyingglass)
edited by the Postal Services and reporting the new issues, offered for sale genuine maximum cards or
postcards showing topics being perfectly concordant with the featured topic of the issued stamps, this would be
appreciated. Well, and as for the projects, one single is largely sufficient as it's quite ambitious considering
our possibilities. It would aim at drawing up and editing the first volume of a repertory of Swiss maximum
cards realized between 1924 and 1949.
Vergangenheit - Gegenwart - Zukunft.
leider schliessen. Ihr grosses Lager wird eingestampft ! (Letztes Beispiel aus diesem Jahr : Die
Firma Globetrotter in Luzern).
Gallus. Gallus is supposed to be born in 551 in Ireland and to have
joined Colomban and his companions in 610 in Luxeuil, walking with
them to the shores of the Lake of Constance. Colomban went on further to Italy, whereas Gallus left
the Lake and went upstream the Steinach river where he founded his Hermitage and where his
disciples joined him. He died around 646, was buried where he had lived and the spot became a
place of pilgrimage. In 719, Otmar had constructed an abbey which he baptized Saint-Gall (Holy
Gall), thus being at the origin of the town carrying the same name.
Gallus.
STANS, Village Square. There is evidence of
human activity in this region since more than 2000
years, but the layout of the Village Square of Stans goes back to the beginning of the 18th century,
after the big fire in 1713 which destroyed two thirds of the hamlet. Among the classified buildings,
we have the hotels Linde and Krone. It's in the Krone that the German writer Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe stayed in 1797 during his 3rd trip to Switzerland. Here, he found inspiration to continue
work on his masterpiece "Faust".
Garret. Seventeen municipalities of
the Jorat region (canton of Vaud) have
founded the association "Jorat souvienstoi"
(Jorat: remember) aiming at
safeguarding ancient crafts and everything related to patrimony and rural traditions. In Mézières,
the Farm des Troncs has been converted into a museum, organizing cultural events and meetings.
Further, a garret constructed in 1641 in Echallens, presenting a risk to fall into ruins, has been
disassembled and conveyed to Mézières where it has been reassembled exactly the same, except for the
roof which has been covered with shingles.
Speicher.
subsistent d'anciennes petites constructions
Crotto. In the Val Poschiavo (canton of Grisons) still exist some ancient small hemispheric stone
constructions called Crotti that make you think of prehistory. These constructions dating from the
16th century are situated above an uncovered water stream, thus keeping the temperature sufficiently
low underneath so as to act as a refrigerating chamber for victuals, perishable goods, milk, wine.
Crotto.
commercial farming expanded two centuries later. This annual herbaceous plant shows a scarlet
flower and long stalks that twist round. The flowers, the young pods and the dried beans are edible.
Feuerbohne.
Gebirgslagen Zentralamerikas. Sie wurde im 16. Jh. in Osteuropa eingeführt, fand
eine grössere Verbreitung aber erst im 18. Jh.
Namen gaben.
L'Oignon.
Cultivé depuis 5000 ans, l'oignon ou Allium cepa
fait partie de la famille des Liliacées. Plante
The Onion.
Onions (allium cepa) are grown since 5000 years. They
belong to the liliaceous family. The onion is a biennial
herbaceous culinary plant. It is grown for its bulb having a strong smell and taste, as well as for its
leaves. Its white flowers are small (4-5 mm) and assembled like a spherical sunshade on top of the
stem. It is used for food and can be eaten minced, cut in rings, raw, fried or steam cooked, mixed
with other vegetables.
Zwiebel.

The Tomatoes. The tomato (lycopersicon lycopersicum) belongs to the solanaceous family and,
from the commercial and culinary point of view, it is considered to be a vegetable. However, the
botanists call it a fruit. It has first been grown in Central and South America. Its flower is yellow
and has the shape of a star. The red fruit was first called "pomme d'amour" (apple of love), "pomme
d'or" (golden apple), and even "pomme du Pérou" (apple from Peru). It's as from the 19th century,
that it has been given the name of "tomatoe", deriving from "xitomatl" which designated the tomatoe
in Aztec language.
Tomate.
Martinsloch (Martin's Hole).
Twice in the year, a special phenomenon happens in the Sernftal (canton of Glaris) giving birth to
plenty of legends and myths which have survived for generations. When being in the village of Elms
and looking at the rocky wall of the Gross Tschingelhorn, you can see a hole. Every year, on 13th or
14th March at 8.53 a.m. and on 30th September or 1st of October at 9.32 a.m., just before the
actual sunrise, a sun beam passes through this "window" and illuminates the clock of the church
belfry of Elms. The site has been declared World Patrimony by the UNESCO.
Martinsloch.
Das Martinsloch bei Elm im
Sernftal (GL) entstand während
der Alpenfaltung, indem eine
härtere Gesteinsschicht über
eine weichere geschoben
wurde. Die weichere wurde
stärker erodiert, so dass im
Grossen Tschingelhorn ein 21
Meter hohes und 18 Meter
breites Loch, das Martinsloch,
entstand. Dieser tektonische
Vorgang dauerte Jahrmillionen.
Zweimal im Jahr, (am 13. oder
14. März und 30. Sept./1.
Okt.), scheint die Sonne kurz
vor dem Aufgang durch das
Martinsloch hindurch für kurze
Zeit auf den Kirchturm von
Elm.
= CARTE MAXIMUM
The first rules for collections in the field of maximaphily have been drawn up in
1946 by the French Maximaphily Association. These regulations have been rewritten
in 1963 and used as a basis for wording the international standards of maximum
cards. They have been adopted in 1978 by the International Philatelic Federation
(FIP) and stipulate the following :
The stamp must be valid for postage and in perfect state. Only one single stamp is
permitted to be affixed on the pictured view side of the postcard. Tax stamps, precancelled
and fiscal stamps are not allowed, which also applies to service stamps,
except for those put at public disposal.
14
The pictured postcard must comply with the dimensions accepted by the
Universal Postal Convention and must, as far as possible, be available at commercial
spots before the issue of the stamp. In case the card is specially edited, it must
reproduce a pre-existing document.
Only rectangular or square format is permitted. Postcards showing multiple views are
not authorized. Gluings, cuttings, photographs as well as documents specially created
for the issue of stamps and printed privately by means of a computer are not to be
used.
The postmark "must be affixed by a qualified postal authority. Its illustration
and/or the text that goes with it, as well as
the place of obliteration must be related to
the topic of the stamp and to the pictured
postcard or to the cause of the issue (events,
charity activities, subject of the series,
a.s.o.)". Cancellations affixed by philatelic
services are admitted on the condition that
the concordance with the place is respected.
This also applies to ordinary not illustrated
cancellations. Finally, the postmark must be
executed during the period of validity of the
stamp and at a date the closest possible to
the issue of the latter.
Man jagte ihn
