<str<strong>on</strong>g>zero</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong><br />

Architecture Canada | RAIC, <strong>2030</strong> Coord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ator<br />

www.raic.org / 2011<br />

The <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong> is a plan of acti<strong>on</strong> to reduce the negative impact<br />

of build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs <strong>on</strong> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment as aggressively and immediately<br />

as we can. It has evolved as a balance between reas<strong>on</strong>able fi nancial<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and technology and the motivati<strong>on</strong> to<br />

create net <str<strong>on</strong>g>zero</str<strong>on</strong>g> energy build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs and envir<strong>on</strong>ments.<br />

Architecture Canada | RAIC has been a str<strong>on</strong>g advocate for<br />

energy c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>de</strong>ca<strong>de</strong>s, and endorsed the <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> November 2006. After years of RAIC effort that <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clu<strong>de</strong>d<br />

nurtur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the Canada Green Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Council (CaGBC), the Architecture<br />

Canada <strong>2030</strong> Committee is energized by the c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> activity <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

commercial build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs across this country. I pers<strong>on</strong>ally have become<br />

wildly optimistic about the political and grassroots <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terest <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> net <str<strong>on</strong>g>zero</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

energy.<br />

The three educati<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>projects</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this magaz<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e represent a fracti<strong>on</strong><br />

of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>credible work that is go<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Canada. In British Columbia<br />

we look at the fi ne example of Sim<strong>on</strong> Fraser University’s Arts and Social<br />

Sciences Complex (ASSC). The École Lawrence Grassi School <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

foothills at Canmore proves that c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> and good <strong>de</strong>sign thrive<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Alberta. And the Jogg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Fossil Centre <strong>de</strong>m<strong>on</strong>strates c<strong>on</strong>si<strong>de</strong>rable<br />

respect for the Bay of Fundy landscape. The Canadian collective of<br />

forward th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dividuals that are plann<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g schools, universities and<br />

other <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stituti<strong>on</strong>s are to be c<strong>on</strong>gratulated, and emulated; the future<br />

appears to be gett<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g brighter.<br />

Susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>able <strong>de</strong>sign will be the legacy and evi<strong>de</strong>nce<br />

that Architecture matters…. both today and well <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to<br />

the future.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Canada is go<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g through a major transformati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> many fr<strong>on</strong>ts. Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs are be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>de</strong>signed and built us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

new three-dimensi<strong>on</strong>al technologies and build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g teams of clients,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tractors, eng<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>eers and architects are work<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g more closely<br />

together than ever before. When we are plann<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g net <str<strong>on</strong>g>zero</str<strong>on</strong>g> build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs and<br />

communities, we need the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tellectual resources of every<strong>on</strong>e and it is<br />

not surpris<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g that educati<strong>on</strong>al facility planners are lead<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the way <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Canada.<br />

The folks plann<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g and build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g educati<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stituti<strong>on</strong>s have<br />

fi gured out that it is a much better <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment to build an excellent<br />

build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g than hav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to renovate <strong>on</strong>e 30 years down the road. And<br />

they get that the sav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs over the life of the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g more than<br />

make up for the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the plann<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g stages. I am even more<br />

optimistic that <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> these build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs our future generati<strong>on</strong>s will be educated<br />

about our energy footpr<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t and what susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability really means.<br />

The Canada Green Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Council and the LEED program have<br />

signifi cantly raised awareness and <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terest <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the objective of<br />

susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability. The CaGBC supports and promotes the project “Liv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>Challenge</strong>”; this is an excellent c<strong>on</strong>fi rmati<strong>on</strong> that build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs<br />

must reduce their present 40 per cent energy footpr<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t.<br />

With the support of the CaGBC and the “Liv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>Challenge</strong>,”<br />

Architecture Canada <strong>2030</strong> will be advocat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g vigorously that<br />

build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs MUST c<strong>on</strong>sume 60 per cent less energy now and 100 per cent<br />

less by the year <strong>2030</strong>. The graduated approach of Architecture <strong>2030</strong><br />

appears to be both atta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>able and realistic and is be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g expan<strong>de</strong>d to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clu<strong>de</strong> the footpr<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t of c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> materials.<br />

“Cheap oil” and low energy costs are <strong>on</strong>ly reas<strong>on</strong>s to postp<strong>on</strong>e<br />

susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability. We need to look at the energy and resource c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

of build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs over a more reas<strong>on</strong>able period of time—say 50 years—to<br />

see that even at today’s low energy costs it makes ec<strong>on</strong>omic sense to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sume 60 per cent less.<br />

The goal of the <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong> is to reduce energy c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

and carb<strong>on</strong> emissi<strong>on</strong>s of new and renovated build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs as aggressively<br />

and immediately as we can. There are no certifi cates or po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts for<br />

compliance; simply a build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g that c<strong>on</strong>sumes signifi cantly less energy.<br />

The process will surely br<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a visi<strong>on</strong> for carb<strong>on</strong> neutrality <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>2030</strong><br />

and a <strong>de</strong>eper respect for the w<strong>on</strong><strong>de</strong>rs of nature, like the Jogg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s<br />

fossil <strong>de</strong>posits. Susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>able <strong>de</strong>sign will be the legacy and evi<strong>de</strong>nce that<br />

Architecture matters…. both today and well <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to the future. ■<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sommati<strong>on</strong> énergétique nette zéro.<br />

allie beauté et technologie <strong>de</strong> po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>te. L’école Lawrence Grassi, dans<br />

les c<strong>on</strong>treforts <strong>de</strong>s Rocheuses, à Canmore, prouve que l’éc<strong>on</strong>omie<br />

d’énergie et la b<strong>on</strong>ne c<strong>on</strong>cepti<strong>on</strong> s<strong>on</strong>t <strong>de</strong>s noti<strong>on</strong>s bien acquises en<br />

Alberta.

On utilise ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tenant les technologies<br />

vif <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>térêt. <strong>Le</strong> CBDCa appuie et promeut le projet Liv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

d’énergie dès ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tenant et 100 pour cent mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s d’ici l’année <strong>2030</strong>.<br />

L’atte<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>te <strong>de</strong> ce but<br />

Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> Ericks<strong>on</strong>’s green legacy<br />

From the time he was a little boy grow<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g up <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Vancouver, David Dove, MRAIC<br />

wanted to be an architect, just like <strong>on</strong>e of his early hometown heroes, the<br />

legendary Arthur Ericks<strong>on</strong>. But Dove never imag<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed that he would <strong>on</strong>e day<br />

be build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> the award-w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>n<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>de</strong>sign that fi rst brought the late Ericks<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ternati<strong>on</strong>al acclaim.<br />

Completed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2008, the Sim<strong>on</strong> Fraser University (SFU) Arts and Social<br />

Sciences Complex (ASSC) <strong>de</strong>signed by Busby Perk<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s+Will c<strong>on</strong>sists of two<br />

phases: Saywell Hall, which is home to archaeology, crim<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ology, cl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ical<br />

psychology, First Nati<strong>on</strong>s studies and the Centre for Forensic Research,<br />

and Bluss<strong>on</strong> Hall, which houses the new Faculty of Health Sciences. Both<br />

C-shaped build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs book-end <strong>on</strong>e another and form a large, landscaped<br />

courtyard that fosters <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>teracti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The solar shad<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g strategy used by Ericks<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the orig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>al build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs,<br />

such as the Aca<strong>de</strong>mic Quadrangle (AQ) and repetitive vertical c<strong>on</strong>crete<br />

However, with Bluss<strong>on</strong> Hall and Saywell Hall, the strategies are different<br />

compared to the nati<strong>on</strong>al standard for a similar<br />

Low-fl ow fume hoods <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the wet labs reduce<br />

by 75 per cent the volume of c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ed air,<br />

which fl ows through the fume hoods. Although<br />

the air from the fume-hood exhaust is not reused,<br />

the heat from it is recovered through air-handl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

units <strong>on</strong> the roof. That hot air heats <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>com<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g cooler<br />

outdoor air to reduce energy c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Elsewhere, thermal mass found <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>crete structure collects heat dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the day<br />

and releases it <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the cool of the even<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g, thereby<br />

reduc<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the cool<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g load dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the day.<br />

Al<strong>on</strong>g with the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>corporati<strong>on</strong> of natural<br />

ventilati<strong>on</strong> and the use of recovered waste heat,<br />

90 per cent of the ASSC has a green roof or<br />

is landscaped to lower the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs’ heat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

and cool<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g loads as well as to reduce energy<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> and storm runoff.<br />

Furthermore, air <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the lecture halls is supplied<br />

through an un<strong>de</strong>r-fl oor plenum. This low-velocity<br />

air fl ow uses signifi cantly less energy than forced<br />

air, which has to travel great distances.<br />

With an overall target of a 35-per-cent<br />

reducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> water use <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> comb<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong> with the<br />

signifi cant energy sav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs, al<strong>on</strong>g with the use<br />

of low or no volatile organic compounds anywhere<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs, the ASSC would almost<br />

assuredly achieve a LEED Gold rat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g.<br />

The goal, however, is not LEED compliance<br />

but rather <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the spirit of the <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong>,<br />

it is how the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g rises to challenge of<br />

ensur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g future generati<strong>on</strong>s can learn while<br />

reduc<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g their impact <strong>on</strong> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

As Dove says, “We know what it takes to<br />

<strong>de</strong>sign a good green build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. It’s how we do<br />

our bus<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ess. It’s not an add-<strong>on</strong> for us.” ■<br />

Much like the mighty Rocky Mounta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> range that frames it, École Lawrence Grassi<br />

Middle School <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Canmore is <strong>de</strong>signed for l<strong>on</strong>g-term susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability. It is well-positi<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

to meet the <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong> hav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g recently been <strong>de</strong>signated as a “net-<str<strong>on</strong>g>zero</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ready” build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). In do<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g so, the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g also<br />

met a <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong> energy reducti<strong>on</strong> milest<strong>on</strong>e early – 65 per cent by 2017 – by<br />

nearly 10 years.<br />

Of about 250 build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs across Canada reviewed un<strong>de</strong>r NRCan’s Design Validati<strong>on</strong><br />

program, <strong>on</strong>ly two have achieved this, and Lawrence Grassi School is the <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e to do so<br />

entirely through energy-effi cient <strong>de</strong>sign (without <strong>on</strong>-site renewable energy generati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

Designed by GEC Architecture, the fi rm <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>corporated a sophisticated mechanical<br />

system <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the school that relies <strong>on</strong> a tempered slab, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tegrated with the school’s<br />

displacement-ventilati<strong>on</strong> system, to heat and cool the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g.<br />

“We had a lot of success with that project both <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> terms of energy effi ciency and<br />

comfort level for its occupants,” says David Edmunds, FRAIC, a senior partner with<br />

Calgary-based GEC Architecture.<br />

The tempered slab system is well-suited to a place like Canmore, which can experience<br />

large day-to-night temperature sw<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs due to the high altitu<strong>de</strong> (about 1,350 metres above sea<br />

level), predom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>antly sunny skies and the legendary Ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ooks.<br />

As Edmunds po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t out, it could hover around the freez<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g mark <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the morn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g when<br />

children go to school and zoom up to 20 <strong>de</strong>grees Celsius by the time they leave <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> late<br />

afterno<strong>on</strong>. The slab’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>herent thermal mass, and the excepti<strong>on</strong>al thermal capacity of water<br />

circulated through it, mo<strong>de</strong>rate <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>door temperatures.<br />

Heat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g and cool<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g is provi<strong>de</strong>d by two high-effi ciency, gas-fi red, fully c<strong>on</strong><strong>de</strong>ns<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g boilers<br />

that circulate heated water through the tempered slab pip<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. All of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>door heat is <strong>de</strong>livered<br />

through the tempered fl oor slab at a temperature that is <strong>on</strong>ly slightly above the <strong>de</strong>sired<br />

ambient room temperature.<br />

S<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g is not air c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ed, radiative cool<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g – <strong>on</strong> warmer days – is achieved<br />

us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the tempered slab as a heat s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k. Meanwhile,<br />

warm, stale air is displaced by <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>com<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g fresh<br />

air and removed near the top of each room via<br />

ductwork c<strong>on</strong>nected to heat-recovery ventilators.<br />

“Rather than mechanically adjust<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g temperatures<br />

us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a very elaborate air c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g or heat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

system – which is also very energy <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>effi cient – the<br />

slab works with the climate,” expla<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Edmunds.<br />

“Because you put heat <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to it all night, it gives<br />

off heat when it’s col<strong>de</strong>st <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the morn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. When the<br />

temperature rises later <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the day, it beg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s to absorb<br />

heat through the even<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g as the temperature drops.<br />

The tempered slab system is wellsuited<br />

to a place like Canmore,<br />

which can experience large day-t<strong>on</strong>ight<br />

temperature sw<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs due to the<br />

high altitu<strong>de</strong>, predom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>antly sunny<br />

skies and the legendary Ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ooks.<br />

Sometimes, it’s okay for susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability<br />

to be beneath you.<br />

Take a stand <strong>on</strong> green-build with Tate un<strong>de</strong>rfloor<br />

service distributi<strong>on</strong> systems (UFSD).<br />

With Tate’s UFSD, it’s the th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs you d<strong>on</strong>’t see that<br />

make the difference. The beauty of this system is <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

what happens below the surface. A comb<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

modular wir<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g, cabl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g and air <strong>de</strong>livery systems offers<br />

sav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> materials and energy efficiency, while also<br />

improv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g air quality and comfort. In fact, it’s a system<br />

so full of green-build attributes, you never really walk<br />

<strong>on</strong> it, you make a stand.<br />

S<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce most of the heat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g or cool<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g is provi<strong>de</strong>d<br />

by the tempered slab, the ventilati<strong>on</strong> system<br />

is <strong>on</strong>ly required for fresh air.<br />

This approach has resulted <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> energy use<br />

that is 70-per-cent better than the basel<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e<br />

<strong>de</strong>fi ned by the Mo<strong>de</strong>l Nati<strong>on</strong>al Energy Co<strong>de</strong> of<br />

Canada for Build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs.<br />

Lawrence Grassi Middle School also promotes<br />

susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability through its architectural <strong>de</strong>sign.<br />

In light of its rugged, mounta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ous and woodsy<br />

surround<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs, giv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the school a wood frame and<br />

a heavy timber glue-lam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ated c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> ma<strong>de</strong><br />

sense, expla<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Edmunds.<br />

Structural <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>sulated panels, which c<strong>on</strong>sist<br />

of a layer of polymer foam sandwiched between<br />

two layers of plywood, were used <strong>on</strong> the roof and<br />

wood-frame walls provi<strong>de</strong> high <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>sulati<strong>on</strong> levels.<br />

Those features, al<strong>on</strong>g with the use of triple-glazed<br />

w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows throughout the school, have resulted <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> “a<br />

very effi cient build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g envelope,” says Edmunds.<br />

Other features such as low-water plumb<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

reduce envir<strong>on</strong>mental impacts and achieve<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>al energy sav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs. ■<br />

D’ailleurs, Ressources naturelles Canada<br />

250 <strong>de</strong>s quatre co<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s du Canada exam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>és<br />

températures <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>térieures modérées.<br />

légendaires Ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ooks.<br />

bét<strong>on</strong> », explique l’architecte Edmunds.<br />

mat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ée. »<br />

L’école <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>termédiaire Lawrence-Grassi valorise également la durabilité<br />

D’autre part, l’<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stallati<strong>on</strong> <strong>de</strong> panneaux isolants structurels, fabriqués<br />

■<br />

« C’est l’histoire du carb<strong>on</strong>e vue à travers<br />

who <strong>de</strong>scribes the Jogg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Fossil Centre as<br />

the “best soapbox” from which to showcase<br />

the effects of climate change.<br />

S<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce the facility is meant to showcase<br />

Carb<strong>on</strong>iferous fossils, no fossil fuels are burned<br />

<strong>on</strong> site. Instead, the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g relies <strong>on</strong><br />

renewable sources to meet its energy needs.<br />

A 50-kilowatt turb<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e, which harnesses<br />

the mighty w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds off the coast, generates twothirds<br />

of the centre’s electrical power needs<br />

that are complemented by the use of solar<br />

photovoltaic panels. Solar thermal panels are<br />

also used to pre-heat the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g’s hot-water<br />

supply.<br />

Nova Scotia-manufactured glaz<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g units<br />

help to diffuse daylight – and regulate heat<br />

ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> and loss – <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the centre’s large spaces.<br />

A liv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g roof, which replicates the vegetati<strong>on</strong><br />

found <strong>on</strong> the cliffs, also m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>imizes heat<br />

collect<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g water, which is pumped from an<br />

un<strong>de</strong>rground cistern to dual-fl ush toilets. That<br />

feature, al<strong>on</strong>g with such low-fl ow plumb<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

for the 1,182-square-metre centre by<br />

57.2 per cent compared to a similar-sized<br />

build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g.<br />

Overall, the Jogg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Fossil Centre – w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ner<br />

of the 2008 Nova Scotia Associati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

Architects’ Lieutenant Governor’s Medal of<br />

Excellence – uses 64.5 per cent less energy<br />

than a comparable build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g.<br />

But while the facility is <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Challenge</strong><br />

compliant and is aim<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g for LEED Gold certificati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

it is also an imag<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ative architectural<br />

reflecti<strong>on</strong> of its envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

The build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g’s cliff-like structure splits, like<br />

a geological fault l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e, to form an entrance<br />

and blends the centre to the site’s geological<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustrial history, expla<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Burdock.<br />

Olive-brown Wallace sandst<strong>on</strong>e, quarried<br />

less than 100 km away, and Nova Scotiaharvested,<br />

similarly-t<strong>on</strong>ed hemlock clad<br />

the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g parallel to the sloped roof that<br />

mimics the slop<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g layers of fossil-rich sedimentary<br />

rock <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the cliffs and s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce-vanished<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e structures.<br />

“The <strong>de</strong>sign is meant to be elemental, as<br />

if the build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g was draawn out of the surround<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

landscape,” expla<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Burdock.<br />

“It is also a metaphorical illustrati<strong>on</strong> of a<br />

passage back <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> time with a huge story to tell<br />

about susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability.” ■<br />
