Course Title: Fundam<strong>en</strong>tals of Heat Transfer<br />
Description of the <strong>cours</strong>e :<br />
a) Objective<br />
This <strong>cours</strong>e aims to provi<strong>de</strong> the bases for un<strong>de</strong>rstanding the fundam<strong>en</strong>tal mechanisms involved in<br />
conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer that are usually coupled in natural <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>ts and<br />
industrial applications.<br />
b) Cont<strong>en</strong>t<br />
− External forced convection (scale analysis, convection heat transfer coeffici<strong>en</strong>t, Nusselt number,<br />
Prandtl number, Integral M<strong>et</strong>hods). Correlation laws in turbul<strong>en</strong>t flows.<br />
− Duct flow (<strong>en</strong>trance l<strong>en</strong>gth, fully <strong>de</strong>veloped flow, mean temperature) : application to heat<br />
exchangers. Correlation laws in turbul<strong>en</strong>t flows.<br />
− Radiative Heat Transfer: basic laws of thermal radiation for the black body; view factors; exchange<br />
b<strong>et</strong>we<strong>en</strong> black and gray surfaces; introduction to semitranspar<strong>en</strong>t she<strong>et</strong>s.<br />
− Radiative exchange with the pres<strong>en</strong>ce of convection : application to solar collectors<br />

Two practical sessions are organized to experim<strong>en</strong>tally study a forced flow and a convective-radiative<br />
system.<br />
c) Prerequisites<br />
L2 and L3: <strong>cours</strong>es in Heat Transfer and Incompressible Fluid Mechanics.<br />
