CO 2 pressure reducer Professional Cylinder pressure manometer Setting screw for operating pressure Operating pressure manometer Precision needle valve • Fit coupling rings to the free ends of the hose and slide hose as far as it will go onto the hose connectors of the checkvalve. IMPORTANT: The arrow on the check valve must point in the CO 2 flow direction! • Screw coupling rings tight. Note: It is also possible to fit the CO 2 check valve at a different point in the hose. However, please note that the shorter the distance is between pressure reducer and check valve, the faster and simpler it will be to set the number of bubbles. Safety rules for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) cylinders) • Use only for supplying CO 2 to aquaria. • CO 2 cylinders are under high pressure. Therefore, please observe the following: • Do not throw CO 2 cylinders. Store in a cool place. Protect against sun and temperatures above 50°C. • Use only when fitted with suitable pressure reducers for reusable CO 2 cylinders with W 21.8 x 1/14’’ connecting thread, e.g. DENNERLE pressure reducer models Profi 2000, Compact, Professional und Exclusive. • Release CO 2 out of upright cylinders only. Secure against tipping over. • Do not force CO 2 cylinders open. • Do not fully empty CO 2 -cylinders. Refilling is only allowed at authorized filling stations. Please note: Tare weight without cage. Unmount cage before refilling. • CO 2 gas is heavier than air and causes suffocation at high concentrations, therefore: • Do not inhale CO 2 gas. • Store out of reach of children. • Store CO 2 cylinders in a well-ventilated place and not in basement rooms. • When transporting individual cylinders in vehicles please observe the following: Secure against sliding or rolling around, otherwise the valve may be damaged, causing CO 2 gas to escape. Provide for ample ventilation, e.g. open window, blower switched on, etc. How the CO 2 fertilizer system Professional works The CO 2 pressure reducer Professional reduces the cylinder pressure to an operating pressure which the user can set in line with practical requirements. The precision needle valve enables highly exact and very simple CO 2 dosage. The CO 2 Flipper ensures effective dissolving of the CO 2 in the aquarium water. A special CO 2 check valve protects the valuable pressure reducer from any backflowing water. The CO 2 content in the aquarium water can be read directly by means of the CO 2 long-term test Correct. The reusable 500 g CO 2 cylinder is particularly practical, supplying CO 2 over a long period before it needs replacing. Connect the pressure reducer • Place reusable CO 2 cylinder in stand. • Pull black protective cap off the needle valve of the pressure reducer. • Close the needle valve by turning in clockwise direction (if it is not yet closed). IMPORTANT: Tighten only gently! • Turn setting screw for operating pressure towards " – " as far as it will go. • Fit pressure reducer to CO 2 cylinder with coupling ring. Tighten coupling ring with 30 mm spanner. Ensure that the washer is fitted correctly and that the sealing surfaces are clean! 2. Fit check valve in CO 2 hose • Use a strong pair of scissors to cut through the CO 2 hose approx. 10 cm from the free end, leaving a straight cut edge. • Unscrew both copling rings from the CO 2 check-valve. 3. Connect the CO 2 hose to the pressure reducer • Unscrew coupling ring from the hose connector of the pressure reducer, and slide onto the free end of CO 2 hose and fix with coupling ring. 4. Connect the CO 2 Flipper • Rinse the CO 2 Flipper with warm tap water. Do not use detergent! • Plug the CO 2 supply hose onto the hose connector. TIP: Dipping the end of the hose into water briefly beforehand makes it easier to slide it over the hose connector. • In the aquarium, select a spot with good but not too strong water circulation. The spot should not be too bright to prevent possible algae growth. • Using the suction cups, attach the CO 2 Flipper vertically, with the collector facing upwards, at least 5 cm below the surface of the water. Ensure that plants do not obstruct the circulation of water through the slits of the CO 2 Flipper. Your CO 2 fertilizer system Professional is now ready for operation. Setting the amount of CO 2 (number of bubbles) 5. The right amount of CO 2 For magnificent plant growth, DENNERLE recommends a CO 2 level in the aquarium of between 15 and 30 mg/l, whereby 20 to 25 mg/l is ideal. The number of bubbles per minute required to achieve this CO 2 content depends on a number of factors (types of plants used, water current, surface area/volume ratio, etc.). This is why it is always necessary to determine the CO 2 amounts for each aquarium individually. 14 15

Setting the number of bubbles Rule of thumb for the basic setting*: start with approx. 10 bubbles per minute per 100 l of aquarium water, i.e. for a 200-l aquarium, for example, use 2 x 10 = 20 bubbles per minute. Adjust the CO 2 supply to the desired CO 2 content in small steps spread over several days. Please note: The more vigorously the surface of the water is set in motion (e.g. by filters, additional aeration), the more CO 2 will be expelled from the aquarium again • Open cylinder valve slowly by turning the handwheel in anti-clockwise direction. Unscrew valve as far as it will go, then screw in again by one half-turn. The cylinder pressure manometer will now indicate approx. 60 bar (at 20 °C). • Turn setting screw for operating pressure on the pressure reducer slowly towards " + " , until the operating pressure is set to approx. 1 bar. • Slowly open the needle valve, initially only very slightly, until the first bubbles issue from the opening of the CO 2 tube of the Flipper. • Set the desired number of bubbles on the needle valve: - Turn in clockwise direction to reduce thenumber of bubbles - Turn in anti-clockwise direction to increase the number of bubbles. Please note: There is always a certain delay before the number of bubbles changes in response to adjustment of the needle valve. The number of bubbles should thus be set with due care. • Check the number of bubbles regularly in the first few days, correcting as necessary. After this initial period it is generally sufficient to check the number of bubbles once a week. • Refit protective cap on needle valve. 7. CO 2 long-term test Correct for simple control of CO 2 content The CO 2 long-term test Correct enables continuous, exact control of the CO 2 content in the aquarium. The colouring of the special CO 2 indicator varies according to the CO 2 content: from • blue = not enough CO 2 through • green = ideal CO 2 content to • yellow = too much CO 2 . The level of CO 2 in the aquarium can be read directly from the colour matching scale in milligrams per litre. The test shows the correct CO 2 content at all times by means of the special CO 2 indicator developed by DENNERLE. The test remains unaffected by any other acids in the aquarium wat, e.g. humic acids, and any changes in carbonate hardness resulting from an increase in waterhardness, evaporation or a change of water! Pull off top part of test container. • Take an ampoule of special CO 2 indicator and ensure that there is no indicator in the neck of the ampoule! For this purpose, shake the indicator down to the bottom of the ampoule (in the same manner as a thermometer is shaken before taking someone‘s temperature). Open ampoule by twisting off the sealing tab. • Drip the entire contents of the ampoule into the top part of the test container. • Slot bottom part of housing including conical reflector into the top part. Check that the O-rings are fitted correctly! • Turn test container carefully and insert in clasp. • Use the suction clip to secure the CO 2 long-term test in an upright position at a clearly visible point in the aquarium where a gentle flow of water prevails. Stick the colour matching scale to the outside of the front pane. Please note. As the CO 2 takes some time to diffuse into the indicator, the colouring of the indicator always responds to changes in the CO 2 content after a delay of several hours. You should therefore always increase the supply of CO 2 in small steps spread over several days until the ideal CO 2 content is attained. Use as a long-term pH test The pH value in an aquarium is determined primarily by the carbonate hardness and the level of CO 2 , some of which forms carbonic acid when it dissolves in the water. Provided that there are no other substances in the water which will have a substantial influence on the pH level (e.g. major quantities of humic acids or nitrate, pH plus / pH minus preparations etc.), the DENNERLE CO 2 long term test can also be used to monitor the pH value in the aquarium. For this purpose, you must: • Measure the carbonate hardness of 19 the aquarium water (tests available from specialist retailers). • Stick an appropriate colour matching scale to the outside of the front pane. 19 The pH value of the aquarium water can now be read directly from the colour scale. Measure the carbonate hardness regularly and always use an appropriate colour scale. 8. If you‘re keen to know more: How to calculate the CO 2 content in the aquarium As certain correlations apply between CO 2 content, carbonate hardness (CH) and pH value, the CO 2 content in the water can be calculated as follows: • Measure the carbonate hardness of your aquarium water. • Read the pH value which corresponds to the desired CO 2 content from the table. You should set this pH value +/- 0.1 by adjusting the number of bubbles accordingly. Example: Carbonate hardness 4 °d, recommended pH 6.8 +/- 0.1. 9. Information on the CO 2 Flipper The CO 2 Flipper is a modern, highly effective CO 2 diffusor which ensures the most efficient possible use of valuable CO 2 . The CO 2 is released at the opening of the CO 2 hose which is located at the bottom of the Flipper. The CO 2 bubbles then rise slowly in the Flipper, in the course of which the CO 2 dissolves in the aquarium water. At the same time, other gases which are naturally dissolved in the aquarium water penetrate into the CO 2 bubbles. These so-called waste gases explain why the bubbles do not dissolve completely, despite becoming smaller as they rise in the aquarium water. The waste gases are substantially lighter than the relatively heavy CO 2 and thus accumulate in the collector at the top. Here they are discharged regularly and automatically via the specially developed waste gas vent. The running-in period for the CO 2 Flipper is approx. 2 days. Initially, the individual CO 2 bubbles combine to form larger bubbles. A biological surface layer of microorganisms soon forms in the Flipper, however. This ensures that the individual CO 2 bubbles pass through the Flipper up to the collector without combining. Care and maintenance 10. Replacing the CO 2 cylinder • Close cylinder valve. • Let off any residual pressure in the pressure reducer by opening the needle valve. Then close needle valve. Caution: Tighten only gently! • Unscrew pressure reducer from CO 2 cylinder and screw onto refilled reusable CO 2 cylinder. Reset number of bubbles. NOTE: The refilling of CO 2 -cylinders is only allowed to be carried out by authorized filling stations. Special information: The needle valve is intended only for fine adjustment of the number of bubbles. Always close the cylinder valve in order to shut down the CO 2 supply for a prolonged period!
