Breeding
For the future
The breeding at DLF-TRIFOLIUM focuses on the needs
of demanding sports such as golf. DLF Genetics is
used in prominent European brands like Johnsons,
Top Green, Prodana, Maison des Gazons and Masterline
and is used on a number of the most prestigious golf
courses. Performance and sustainability are both
important research criteria and our development of
new species and concepts, such as Microclover, are
the key to success.
Greenkeeper.eu
Finally a European magazine that is really European!
Starting autumn 2007 my company will start a new pan-European magazine for all European greenkeepers.
Golf is growing very strongly and becoming a more and more international industry. This means there is a
huge demand for high quality, unbiased information about Greenkeeping and the golf-industry. Unique to
GREENKEEPER EU is the fact that it is published in the most important European languages: English, French
and German. GREENKEEPER EU is distributed for free to every European golf club and the rest of the European
Golf industry like suppliers, consultants and national and international Golf and Greenkeeping organizations.
Industrie.
Smørum Golf a 54 trous. 27 trous sur un
parcours championship, 9 trous par-3 et par-4
et deux parcours par-3. Smørum Golf est situé
justement au bord du périphérique du Grand
Copenhague dans une région avec beaucoup
golfeurs potentiels. On pourrait dire irrespectueument
12 www.greenkeeper.eu
phosphate. Pendant la saison de végétation on
ne donne rien. Dans la période d’hiver on pulvérise
chaque 4 à 5 semaines du sulfate de potasse
et du sulfate de fer. Rasmussen
prochains choix. Une fois par an on observe
les résultats des greens. On a déjà découvert
The new
GP Air
Pedestrian Ground Probe Aerator
Good soil profiles are well drained, have adequate air
voids and are vibrant with microbial life. Water logging,
bad drainage, compacted soil and anaerobic conditions
are all factors associated with poor soil structure.
These are everyday battles for those tending them.
• Using a controlled blast of compressed air, the GP Air
lifts and shatters the compacted layers of soil allowing
water to infiltrate and saturated soils to drain. The
process of opening up the soil profile initiates a
healthier soil environment, oxygenating the root zone,
promoting the growth of beneficial soil organisms and
enhancing the availability of nutrients.
• The GP Air combines clever design with robust
engineering giving a cost effective solution for poor soil
structure. Using an exclusive air delivery system, the GP
Air is the perfect answer to initiating and maintaining a
healthy soil environment.
An
was natürlich undenkbar ist. Man bezahlt nicht
einen Eintrittspreis von 100.000 US-Dollar, nur
um zu erfahren, dass im nächsten Jahr
geschlossen ist.
Drainagesystem
Im Winter 2004/2005 wurde mit der
Installation eines Drainagesystems aus sandgefüllten
Drainageschlitzen begonnen. Die
Hauptleitungen haben einen Durchschnitt von
ca. 10 Zentimetern, die Nebenleitungen von
5 Zentimetern. Sie liegen im Abstand von 2
bis 4 Metern. Die Wahl fiel auf sandgefüllte
Drainageschlitze, weil hierbei die Gefahr einer
Verschmutzung oder Verschlammung der Drains
am geringsten ist. Neben einem Drainagesystem
wendet man auch Sandbanding an. Beim
Sandbanding wird ein Netz von Sandschlitzen
an der Oberfläche mit einer darunterliegenden
Drainageschicht kombiniert.
Hartnäckige Poa
Der Loch Lomond Golf Club wurde Mitte der
1990er Jahre durch den damaligen Eigentümer
angelegt, der die finanziellen Konsequenzen
jedoch völlig falsch einschätzte. Wo sich jetzt
die Anlage befindet, lag früher das Gelände
von Rossdhu Castle, dem Stammsitz des
Colquhoun-Clans. Das Einzige, was heute noch
an die Colquhouns erinnert, ist eine malerische
Schlossruine hinter dem Klubhaus sowie
Hunderte von alten Eichen und anderen
prächtigen Bäumen, an deren Stämmen man
Vorgehensweise in aller Öffentlichkeit hinterfragt
Siems
unterscheidet sich insofern deutlich von den
meisten Greenkeepern, als er offen für neue
Entwicklungen und bereit ist, die Dinge auch
auf andere Art und Weise anzugehen. In seinen
Überlegungen erwähnt er auch Horstrotschwingel
als Alternative für Flechtstraußgras. Aber ob er
das ernst gemeint hat, darf vorerst bezweifelt
werden.
A Ton of Seed per Hectare per Year
Redexim Turf Aerator used for overseeding at Almeerderhout
Maintaining a Fescue green is thought to be less intensive than a ‘normal’ green with Fescue and Bent. One exception is overseeding.
To convert an existing green to a 100% Fescue green one needs to carry out a very intensive regime. At Golf club Almeerderhout this means
overseeding the greens four times per year with roughly 225 kg/ha. This is almost a ton of seed per year.
Author: Hein van Iersel
At first sight it seems that overseeding with such
an amount is only good for Barenbrug’s
shareholders, but according to course superintendant
Casper Paulussen this treatment serves
a clearly defined plan and has proven to be very
effective. The amount of Fescue in a test green
went up from 3% in 1999 to 56% in 2006.
Equally interesting is the machine playing
a key role in the process of overseeding at
Almeerderhout: the Redexim Turf Aerator. This
machine is not originally designed for overseeding,
but for aeration. On the European
continent this machine is not widely used ,
neither for aeration nor for overseeding. In the
UK almost every Golf Course has a Sarrel roller
for a quick superficial aeration or for the
preparation for overseeding. Sarrel rollers are
not only popular machines on Golf Courses,
but are also widely used on Bowling greens and
Cricket grounds. A Sarrel roller is an easy to use
machine causing little disturbance to the surface.
Redexim’s model exists of a tractor-mounted
steel cylinder with welded tines. The roller is
equipped with a number of counterweights in
order to achieve a good penetration depth. In
Almeerderhout a total weight of 450 kg is used.
Paulussen: “Overseeding is often done with
machines having a verticutting action. The seed is
indeed well distributed and well worked-in, but
the existing sward suffers enormously. The
advantage of a Sarrel roller is the fact that the
sward is hardly damaged at all. The existing
plants are pressed aside, but not damaged.”
Besides the Sarrel roller Almeerderhout also owns
a ‘normal’ Charterhouse Greenseeder. Paulussen
uses this machine for overseeding his tees. The
disadvantage of this machine (cutting through
the sward) is actually an advantage when used
on the tees of Almeerderhout because these have
ugly patches of Perennial Ryegrass. The cutting
action of the Greenseeder has a positive influence
on the appearance of these greens.
Red Fescue
One of the reasons for the use of a less
disturbing seeder is that Red Fescue suffers more
of disturbance than Bentgrass, especially in
combination with the minimal application of
fertilizer at Almeerderhout. Paulussen: “We
20 www.greenkeeper.eu
Man & machine
choose for durability and modest use of fertilizers
and apply about 30 kg pure Nitrogen per year. All
N is given in the form of foliage feeding. During
the growth season we apply a minimum amount
of fertilizer every two weeks. This means 1 to 1.5
grams of N in 20 treatments.” The result is a vital
sward, however also one that recovers a bit
slower from disturbance.
Turf Aerator
The overseeder/aerator used at Almeerderhout
makes 650 holes with a depth of 3 cm per
square meter of sward. This is deep enough for
the Fescue seed. Paulussen: “If you look at it
carefully it is actually nonsense that in a standard
blend Fescue and Bent are mixed together into
one bag. Bent needs light to germinate so one
can seed Bent directly onto a green. Also the
weight of Bent is much less, so the two different
species will definitely separate during the process
of seeding.” The whole process of overseeding
starts with aeration of the greens, followed by
application of the seed with a Scotts spreader.
All greens are sown in two directions with a 45
degree offset. Almeerderhout uses a blend of
three Barenbrug varieties of Fescue: Barcrown,
Barpearl and Bargreen. The first two are a variety
of Trichophylla (slender creeping Red Fescue).
Bargreen is a variety of Commutata (chewings
Fescue). After the application the seeds are
worked-in with switch-poles (the same that are
used to sweep the greens), but only after a light
dressing of 2 mm is applied using a traditional
dresser. This method has proven to be the least
disturbing to the golfers, mainly because the
Sarrel roller hardly disturbs the surface. Paulussen:
“The greens do look a little ‘rough’ after the
whole process, but the playing surface remains
fast and certainly fair.”
Looks
Fescue greens may be fast and fair, but they
indeed look a bit more brownish in spring
compared to ‘normal’ greens with a high
amount of Bent. This is even more clearly visible
on greens in transition. The playing quality can
certainly compete with every other course, but
the ‘looks’ are a little less attractive. This is not
uniquely the result of using pure Fescue. In 2006
Paulussen has constructed a green next to the
clubhouse with 100% Fescue and this green
looks really beautiful. Paulussen: “We have built
this green to show our members the final result
we are trying to achieve. This green looks great
and is well to maintain and has excellent playing
characteristics which is of course of the utmost
importance.”
After-effects
The greenkeepers of Golf Club Almeerderhout
applied about 30 kg N to their greens during the
past two years. Additional nutrition resulted from
the decomposition of the existing layer of thatch.
Casper Paulussen takes yearly samples from
various greens. The samples are evaluated by
different laboratories in order to minimize errors.
In the long term it is possible that more N will
be applied. The conditions just beneath the top
layer are a little bit more fertile as a result of the
decomposition of the thatch layer. Here Fescue,
with its deep roots, profits more than Annual
Meadowgrass. The topdressing methods together
with the minimal application of fertilizer result
in more uniform greens throughout the course.
Paulussen: “I believe in the traditional
maintenance with Fescue and Bent and I also
believe that Fescue will certainly dominate at
Almeerderhout with its typically high pH.”
