Message from the President
Among our proudest moments in 2009 stands
the inauguration of The National Gallery
of Canada Foundation Legacy Circle last
December 9, in front of nearly 300 patrons who
braved the elements to attend our Annual Donor
Recognition Reception.
We established the Legacy Circle to honour
those generous individuals who, wishing to
make a lasting difference to the Gallery for future
generations, remember the Foundation in their
estate planning with a provision for a financial
gift. Legacy gifts are a vital source of support for
the Gallery and I hope you will consider making
such a gift to the Foundation.
Turning to the new year, I am delighted to
note the continued support of Pratt & Whitney
Canada, which will be the presenting sponsor of
the exhibitions Nicolas Baier: Pareidolias, on view
until April 24, and, later this summer, Angela
Grauerholz. With these two, Pratt & Whitney
Canada will have generously supported five of
the Gallery’s exhibitions in the last two years.
We are immensely grateful to them for their
generosity.
In an exciting new development, it gives me
great pleasure to welcome HP Canada as a corporate
patron. Our new collaboration with HP
brings art and technology together in an innovative
way and will allow the Gallery to break
new ground in making some of the National
Collection’s most delicate works accessible to the
public. The first initiative, launched as part of the
exhibition 19th-Century French Photographs from
the National Gallery of Canada now on view, is recounted
in the next pages. I am pleased to note
that the catalogue for this exhibition was made
possible thanks to support from The Dr. Shirley
L. Thomson Art Research Endowment.
On a final note, I wish to extend a warm welcome
to David G. Broadhurst and Michael G.
Adams, who recently joined the Foundation’s
Board of Directors, and sincere thanks to
Elisabetta Bigsby and Mirko Bibic, most recently
Chair of the Governance Committee and Chair
of the Audit Committee respectively for their invaluable
contribution while serving on our
Board.

Message de la présidente
L’inauguration du Cercle du patrimoine de la Fondation du
Musée des beaux-arts du Canada lors de notre réception annuelle
de reconnaissance des donateurs qui eut lieu le 9 décembre dernier
figure parmi nos plus grands moments de 2009. Que ce lancement
ait eut lieu en présence de près de 300 mécènes qui ont
fait fi de la météo peu clémente ce soir-là pour assister à notre
réception ne le rends que plus mémorable.
Nous avons créé le Cercle du patrimoine dans le but de rendre
hommage aux généreux individus qui souhaitent contribuer au
Musée de façon durable pour les générations à venir en inscrivant
un don financier à la Fondation dans leur plan de succession. Les
dons patrimoniaux constituent une source de soutien vitale pour
le Musée et j’espère que vous considérerez la possibilité de faire
un tel don à la Fondation.
En regard de la nouvelle année, je suis heureuse de souligner
l’appui continu de Pratt & Whitney Canada qui a accepté d’être le
commanditaire principal des expositions Nicolas Baier. Paréidolies,
présentée jusqu’au 24 avril, et Angela Grauerholz, présentée cet été.
Avec ce nouvel engagement, Pratt & Whitney Canada aura généreusement
appuyé cinq expositions du Musée au cours des deux
dernières années. Nous lui en sommes infiniment reconnaissants.
Par ailleurs, j’ai l’immense plaisir d’accueillir HP Canada en
tant que partenaire corporatif du Musée. Cette nouvelle collaboration
unit art et technologie de façon novatrice et permettra au

Making Fragile Art Accessible
Enclosed in protective display
cases are two exquisite albums containing
more than a hundred beautiful
and informative images – each
telling a story about the past – taken by
19th-century photography pioneers Felix
Bonfils and Maxime Du Camp. The albums
are Bonfils’ Souvenirs d’Orient, Album
pittoresque des sites, villes et ruines de la Terre-
Sainte, 1878, and Du Camp’s Egypte, Nubie,
Palestine et Syrie, vol. 2, 1852.
Both albums are now so fragile that they can
only be handled with the greatest of care by
trained museum professionals, meaning that the
stories they tell about the places and settings that
moved or intrigued Bonfils and Du Camp are largely
lost to Gallery visitors, who cannot touch the pages.
This situation raised an important question for the
National Gallery: How could it showcase the albums
and share the important photographs they contain with visitors so
that they could fully appreciate them without jeopardizing the delicate
integrity of the works?
The Gallery found the answer in HP Canada’s interactive
TouchSmart technology, which allows users to simply pinch, rotate,
arc, flip, press or drag a finger across the screen of a PC to access
information, entertainment and social networks in a natural,
intuitive way.

The HP TouchSmart initiative at the Gallery was launched at
the exhibition 19th-Century French Photographs from the National
Gallery of Canada, on view until May 16, 2010. Exhibition visitors
are able to browse the multitude of images, which have been meticulously
scanned and are presented in an album format. Viewers
are transported back in time as they “flip through” electronic versions
of these historical photographs on a widescreen display with
a multi-touch enabled screen, while the original works sit next to
the interactive installation, safely preserved in a display case.
The Foundation and the National Gallery are proud to collaborate
with HP in this Canadian first – the Gallery being the first
major cultural institution in Canada to use the HP TouchSmart
technology. HP’s generous gift opens a world of possibilities for
the Gallery to present some of its most fragile works in an exciting
and innovative way.
“We are partnering with the Foundation and National Gallery
to enrich the lives of visitors by providing interactive access to fragile
works of art,” says Charles Salameh, Vice President and General
Manager, Personal Systems Group, HP Canada . “With HP’s multitouch
technology, visitors can interact with and view pieces of history
that were previously inaccessible.”
For the National Gallery, this is only the beginning. Several exhibitions
will benefit from HP’s innovative technology, including
the exhibition 19th-Century British Photographs from the National
Gallery of Canada slated for 2011. Canadians from across the country
will also enjoy the enhanced experience provided by HP’s
multi-touch technology, as these interactive displays will become
part of some of the exhibitions travelling throughout Canada under
the Gallery’s On Tour program.
We applaud and thank HP Canada for its generous contribution
making this interactive experience possible.

De l' art fragile devient accessible
Deux albums exquis composés d’une centaine de magnifiques
images relatant chacune une histoire enracinée dans le
passé sont exposés dans des vitrines. Les clichés ont été pris au
XIX e siècle par deux pionniers de la photographie, soit Félix
Bonfils et Maxime Du Camp. L’album de Bonfils s’intitule
Souvenirs d’Orient, Album pittoresque des sites, villes et ruines de la
Terre-Sainte (1878), et celui de Du Camp, Égypte, Nubie, Palestine
et Syrie, vol. 2 (1852).
Ces deux albums sont si fragiles que seuls les spécialistes de
musée qualifiés peuvent y toucher avec le plus grand soin. Les
histoires qu’ils racontent au sujet des lieux et des milieux qui
ont tant frappé ou intrigué Bonfils et Du Camp sont en grande
partie inaccessibles aux visiteurs qui ne peuvent en toucher les
pages.
Cette situation a soulevé une importante question : comment
le Musée pourrait-il exposer ces albums et partager les superbes
photographies qu’ils contiennent de façon à ce que les visiteurs
puissent les apprécier pleinement, sans toutefois mettre en péril
leur délicate intégrité?

Le Musée a trouvé la réponse à cette question dans la technologie
interactive TouchSmart de HP Canada qui permet aux
utilisateurs de pincer, de faire pivoter, d’arquer, de faire tourner,
d’appuyer ou de glisser leurs doigts sur l’écran tactile d’un ordinateur
afin d’accéder à des réseaux d’information, de divertissement
et d’échange social de manière tout à fait naturelle et
intuitive.
L’initiative TouchSmart de HP au Musée a été lancée dans le
cadre de l’exposition Photographies françaises du XIX e siècle du
Musée des beaux-arts du Canada à l’affiche au Musée jusqu’au 16
mai 2010. Les visiteurs de cette exposition ont l’occasion de découvrir
et d’appécier la multitude d’images méticuleusement
numérisées et présentées sous forme d’album. Ils peuvent ainsi
remonter dans le temps à mesure qu’ils « feuillètent » les versions
électroniques de ces photographies historiques sur un
écran tactile multi-touch pendant que les exemplaires originaux
reposent à côté de l’installation interactive, préservés dans une
vitrine.

La Fondation et le Musée sont fiers de
s’associer à HP pour cette première canadienne.
En effet, le Musée est actuellement
la seule grande institution culturelle
canadienne à utiliser la technologie
TouchSmart. Le généreux don de HP
ouvre de nouvelles possibilités pour le
Musée, qui pourra avoir recours à cette
technologie pour présenter certaines de
ses œuvres les plus fragiles de manière
captivante et novatrice.

Applauded in
Halifax
In January, Associate Curator of
Early Canadian Art René Villeneuve
participated in the opening of the
exhibition Lord Dalhousie: Patron and
Collector at the Dalhousie University
Art Gallery in Halifax. Curated by
Villeneuve and presented in Ottawa
in 2008, the exhibition is in Halifax
as part of the NGC’s On Tour
program.
In his remarks, Villeneuve noted
the generosity of the Members and
Supporting Friends of the National
Gallery and the Foundation, notably
Louise and Harvey Glatt, who had
come together in 2006 to enable the
NGC to acquire seventeen works
from the collection of the 9 th Earl of
Dalhousie. Several of these works
are in the exhibition.
The mention met with spontaneous
applause. “I was delighted
but not surprised by this response,”
says Villeneuve. “The audience
clearly appreciated the scope and
importance of the exhibition. They
were proud that these works were
repatriated to Canada and honored that they were presented
in Halifax for the first time.”

Donateurs de la
Fondation applaudis
à Halifax
En janvier, le conservateur associé de
l’art canadien ancien, René Villeneuve, a
participé à l’inauguration de l’exposition
Lord Dalhousie. Mécène et collectionneur à
la galerie d’art de l’université de
Dalhousie à Halifax. M. Villeneuve était
le conservateur responsable de cette
exposition lorsqu’elle fut présentée à
Ottawa en 2008. Elle est maintenant à
Halifax dans le cadre du programme En
tournée du MBAC.
Dans son discours, M. Villeneuve a
souligné la générosité des Membres et
des Amis donateurs du Musée et de la
Fondation, notamment Louise et Harvey
Glatt, qui se sont unis en 2006 pour
permettre au MBAC d’acquérir dix-sept
œuvres de la collection du 9 e comte de
Dalhousie. Plusieurs de ces œuvres font
partie de cette exposition.
Cette mention suscita des applaudissements
spontanés dans la salle. « J’ai
été ravi de cette réaction, mais pas vraiment
surpris » explique M. Villeneuve.
« Il est clair que les Haligoniens apprécient
l’ampleur et l’importance de cette
exposition. Ils sont fiers du rapatriement
de ces œuvres au Canada et honorés de pouvoir les admirer à
Halifax pour la toute première fois. »
