EDITORIALAntonio TAJANIAntonio TAJANIVice-president of the European Commission in charge of industry and entrepreneurshipEuropean CommissionCompared to other industries and to high-tech sectors, policy often neglects the food and beveragesindustry. Those better informed are well aware of its real importance: it’s the largest industrial employerin the European Union and the territorially-rooted variety of its products contributes to make the Unionthe leader in the sector’s world trade. I’m strongly convinced that the economic success of this sectorin the presence of consumers’ high expectations on quality and safety is based on a high level ofknowledge, technologies and innovations. The sector figures also among those facing the highest environmental challenges, while consumersmake environmentally conscious choices. Along the entire food value chain, eco-innovations aretherefore strategically indispensable. I’m confident that the knowledge available to the sector allows itto stay sustainably competitive. This sector can thus set an example for greening industry.I’m therefore proud that the European Commission contributes to the project EcoTroFood. Itscompetition EcoTrophelia illustrates the vitality of the sector’s innovation system: students revealingtrends with their creative eco innovations for companies, with industrial associations, public agenciesand private intermediaries bringing their specific knowledge to the innovation process.I personally attach great importance to this sector, as shown by our ongoing activities such as the HighLevel Forum for a Better Food Supply Chain. I wish the participants of EcoTrophelia therefore a hugesuccess with their eco innovations in terms of professional satisfaction and – culinary delight. Antonio TAJANI23

INTERVIEWSDaniele ROSSIFrançois MARIANIDaniele ROSSIGeneral Manager Federalimentare (Italian federation of the food industry)«ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE is a key competition that attracts not only students to the food sector, but alsothat represents a hotbed of eco-innovative ideas for the food industry. This competition aims to encourageSMEs from the food sector to invest in innovation and to offer them access to excellent food products, pending for their development. The food industry has to constantly recreate itself: very effective in boostingcompetitiveness, innovation is thus a priority for companies.Genuine hotbed of innovative ideas for the food sector, collective adventure at the crossroads of education, research and business, ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE has included, since 2011, the eco-innovation dimensionand thus, is answering to a real concern.Sustainability is a strategic issue for the food industry which has the ambition to become an example ofeconomic development, environmentally friendly.»François MARIANIPresident of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Vaucluse«ECOTROPHELIA is a great adventure. An adventure born in Avignon, Provence, in the south of France. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Vaucluse, with its partners and stakeholders in the industry, launched in 2000 the student food innovation awards for promoting excellence and innovation in thischaracteristic sector of our region.Given the success of this enterprise, ECOTROPHELIA exceeded its national framework and took on aEuropean dimension in 2008. This success is the result of extensive partnerships at local, national andEuropean level. The different players in this project have found a powerful complement to creating adynamic structure to benefit the entire industry. ECOTROPHELIA is a major European melting pot ofinnovation and competitivity in the food industry. The European Commission confirmed its support by mandating the CCI of Vaucluse in 2011 to implementa European project to promote eco-innovation in the food chain: ECOTROFOOD.This year ECOTROPHELIA Europe sees Universities competing from 15 different countries. This clearlydemonstrates how the local experience of a territory can feed the actions at European level and evenbecome a reference. It is a point of pride for entrepreneurs of Vaucluse who have invested their energyin promoting this sector. They are now recognized at the highest level of legitimacy and relevance fortheir work.As entrepreneurs and agri-food industry players in Europe, we do indeed have a common goal to buildthe services of this sector and its businesses. In this sense of commitment of our Chamber of Commerce and Industry and our partners, I want tothank them sincerely for their support and loyalty.»Daniele ROSSI«ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE est un concours phare qui non seulement attire des étudiants vers le secteuralimentaire, mais constitue un véritable incubateur d’idées éco-innovantes pour l’industrie alimentaireagroalimentaire.
