RES or how to add genres
sandy Hunter exPlains tHe linK between festival,
magazine and dvd
All is full of love (A song by Björk / Video clip directed by Chris Cunningham)
When RES was founded ?
RES was created in 1996 in San Francisco. The magazine followed
one year later. The original idea was to present artists
who were using new tools at the time, such as video or digital
editing. RESFEST has then become a travelling festival,
which goes in 35 towns every year. Now we are not only interested
in the digital field, we are more a “festival of ideas” that
shows creative video clips and short films. That is why we go
to Sundance or Clermont: we try to find films!
How does the festival RESFEST take place?
We prepare a programme (made up of 12 to 14 short films, to
which we have added a retrospective of Beck’s video clips, the
Traktor collective and the XL Label) which goes everywhere
around the world and soon in France. But every country -excepting
the United States and the United Kingdom- can create a
programme. Our magazine is sold with a DVD compiling short
films, video clips and music.
What is the link between RES and the DVD series, The
Work of Director?
RES belongs to the PALM group, which produces this DVD series
presenting the work of video clips directors. I have written notes
on the cover of the DVD devoted to Michel Gondry and we have
What is your view on the short film broadcasting in Northern
America?
Beside specialised TV channels, such as Moviola in Canada, there
are very few spaces devoted to short films, even if some Internet
websites like Ifilms or Atomfilms are doing their job well, and some
festivals -Sundance, Worldwide Short Film Festival in Torontoexist.
I am the artistic director of Kontagious, a new company
based in Toronto and New-York. It supplies and produces the
content of short programmes for mobile phones. In the future, the
3G technology will be a new way to broadcast some “very short
films”: I think indeed that it will be hard to download films longer
than three minutes. This sector is of course expanding a lot at the
moment, but I have not seen a lot of short films becoming famous
this way: it seems that only blockbusters, porn and sports are
managing for the moment to make the Video On Demand expand
in Northern America! But things are just starting…
onedotzero
> BH > Translation: BB
The structure onedotzero was founded by Shane Walter and Matt
Hanson in 1997 in London. The original idea was to present
new forms of graphic and digital creations, and to explore new
forms of moving images (graphic design, Vjing and original shooting).
What was first a week-end has become a proper travelling
festival. To have a general idea of the event, a DVD has been
released for four years, with an interesting panorama of short
films and video clips, all closely linked to music.
onedotzero is supported by the Arts Council of England. It has
been developing also business projects: onedotzero INdustries was
founded recently in order to expand their work with independent
artists and produce videos for U2 or the Rolling Stones live
shows for example. They also do TV series; a project of partnership
is in progress with BBC Film Network and Channel 4.
The next edition of the festival will take place in June 2006, at
the ICA in London.
