Success Through Knowledge
NEWSLETTER
“Pursuing Academic Excellence: Al Amanah College is committed to pursuing academic excellence and
nurturing the individual abilities in a caring , educational and Islamic environment.”
From the Principal’s Office
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of
Al Amanah College;
Welcome to our November newsletter for
2016. In this edition we continue to share
with you the achievements of our students,
as well as provide you with some important
information about the start of the 2017
school year.
I would like to begin by congratulating all
the parents who performed Hajj this year. I
would also like to wish everyone a Happy
New Hijri year. Kul ^ am wa antum bkheir.
Term Four always seems to be very busy
and this year has been no exception. New
Hijri year celebration was a great success,
students enjoyed celebrating this great occasion,
I thank all staff members for making
this event a successful one. The successes
and achievements that our students
enjoy would not be possible without the
partnership between the school and home.
Thank you to our parents and caregivers
for your ongoing support of Al Amanah
College. We value it and look forward to
continuing to work alongside to help and
support your child in 2017.
Our Years Six and Ten students will be
respectively farewelled on Friday 25 November
and on Monday 12 December.
These events will be held at the Liverpool
campus and are always memorable for the
students and their parents. The Year 6 students
will also be given the opportunity
next week to attend an Open Day at the
high school section at the Liverpool campus
to allow students to become familiar
with the high school and to participate in a
fun Oz Tag game.
We will also be hosting our annual Kindy
Orientation for our 2017 Kindergarten students.
Session dates are as follows;
Wednesday 2 November, Wednesday 9 and
16 November from 9:00am - 10:30am.
These sessions give students the opportunity
to interact with peers and engage in fun
Kindy activities while parents attend workshops
to familiarise with general school
information and procedures, literacy and
numeracy sessions and ideas for healthy
lunch boxes. The information sessions are
important and we would like to encourage
all our 2017 kindy parents to attend all three
sessions.
Students from Al Amanah College achieved
outstanding results when they participated
in ICAS this year. Those students whose
achievements were outstanding were rewarded
with Certificates of Merit, Credit,
Distinction and High Distinction. ICAS are
developed for students in Years 2 to 12 and
are sat annually. Each ICAS test is designed
to assess students’ academic ability in aspects
of Computer Skills, English, Mathematics,
Science, Spelling and Writing.
A general reminder to all parents on the
importance of packing a healthy lunchbox.
Health problems related to poor choice of
food is common in our society. Too many
Australian children are overweight, and
have health problems related to diet. To
help children develop healthy eating habits
and becoming more responsible in making
the right food choices, the school prohibits
take away food such as MacDonald's
or the like.
On a final note, student reports will be issued
during our Parent/Teacher interviews
(primary) and End of Year Presentation
Ceremonies (secondary), scheduled for
Weeks nine and ten this term. Teachers
will discuss your child’s academic results
and present their class assessments in their
individual portfolios. It is very important
that parents book an appointment to see the
classroom teacher, when forms are distributed,
to avoid missing out.
I also extend my sincere thanks to the teaching
and support staff at Al Amanah College,
who throughout this year, have worked
together to provide Al Amanah students
with good teaching and learning programs.
^Id-ul-Adha Fete 2016
It was a tremendous effort from the SRC and all the teachers who brought together the 2016 Eid Al-Adha Fete. It was nothing but FUN
FUN FUN!!! After lunch at one o’clock, students dashed to the playground to see what activities were in store for them. The students
were really excited to be spending two hours having fun at its best. We had jumping castles, bungee run, the Rock n Roll and SO much
more. We even had a handball competition with Mr Jameloui which everyone enjoyed.
Many students went home with prizes filling up their bags and one of the highly populated areas in the fete was the face painting. This
was done by our very own teachers; the little ones enjoyed it very much. The food stalls were filled with hungry students with the
famous spider drinks, corn cups, and delicious fairy floss to be given out. Everyone was over-excited from the sugar they had eaten but
at the end of the day this was, without a doubt, a HUGE success! Thankyou again to the awesome teachers who helped out with this
event. We all had a fantastic time!
The Migration of Prophet Muhammad
The immigration of Prophet Muhammad, otherwise
known as the Hijrah, was not about
running away from being killed, nor was it
about fear, or a retreat from bidding the lawful
or forbidding the unlawful. The Hijrah
was done in obedience to what Allah had ordered.
During the Hajj season, when the people
gathered, the Prophet peace be upon him
used to call them to Islam and say to them:
“say no one is God except Allah and then you
will succeed”.
The Prophet was very patient with what the
blasphemers had done to him. His companions
tolerated many types of torture including
whipping, hitting, imprisonment, burning,
and execution. Yet when they gained the
support and aid from Allah, it was as if they
had turned into a solid rock that could not be
scratched. Their pious heartbeats and their
silent supplications shook the hearts and
thrones of the disbelievers.
Consider the words of our master Muhammad
after the people had come to his uncle Abu
Talib and asked: “what does your nephew
want out of his call to Islam? If he wants status
we shall give him it and we will not do
anything without his consultation. If he
wants money, we will collect it for him until
he becomes the richest amongst us. If he
wants to rule us, we shall give him the position
of king“. But the Prophet peace be upon
him said to his uncle: “if they were to place
the sun in my right hand and the moon in
my left, I would not leave this call to Islam“.
There is not a single prophet that left
the call to Islam, nor is there a prophet who
neglected the call to Islam due to hardships
or calamities that had overcome him. The
blasphemers agreed to killing the Prophet
peace be upon him. They encouraged one
man from each tribe to hit the Prophet with
their swords simultaneously so that his
murder could be seen as done by all those
tribes and so that no one from the Prophet’s
family could seek revenge. Angel Jibril
came to the Prophet peace be upon him
telling him about their evil plan. Angel
Jibril ordered the Prophet not to sleep in the
same place he used to
The Prophet then called upon ^Aliyy Ibn
Abi Talib and instructed him to sleep on the
same bed that the Prophet used to sleep on
and to cover himself with the same green
cloak that the Prophet used to cover himself
with. ^Aliyy did this. A group of young
blasphemers surrounded the Prophet’s
house. On his way out, the Prophet, peace
be upon him, picked up a handful of dirt.
He sprinkled it on their heads, as he recited
Ayahs 1-9 from Surat Yasin.
3
Ayah 40 of Surat At-Tawbah means: “And
he (the Prophet) would say to his companion
not to be saddened, for they had support
from Allah.” The companion mentioned
in this Ayah is Abu Bakr as–Siddiq.
This Ayah does not mean that Allah is physically
present with them in the cave, because
Islam states that Allah exists without
a place. Rather the actual meaning of this
Ayah is that Allah is supporting and giving
victory to them over their enemies.
Allah the Almighty saved the Prophet with
the weakest spider’s web. A spider spun its
web around the entrance of the cave where
the Prophet was. Nearby two doves had
laid eggs, and by the Will of Allah the
Prophet was not seen by the blasphemers.
The believers waited patiently in Madinah
for the arrival of their beloved Prophet to
their land. Some would go to the outskirts
of Madinah every day waiting for him, others
climbed trees to see if they could see
him coming in the distance.
On midday of a very warm day, the Ansar
went out in many groups to the outskirts of
Madinah as usual, expecting the arrival of
the Prophet. They heard one of them yelling
loudly and saying: “the one you have
been waiting for has arrived”. Enthusiastically,
hundreds rushed out to welcome and
greet their master, Prophet Muhammad,
while chanting.
May Allah return this holy occasion to us
filled with blessings and peace, Amin.

Public Speaking Competition - 2016
Al Amanah College Liverpool held the
annual Public Speaking Competition finals
on Thursday 22 September in the Grand
Hall.
This competition is an annual event that is
held between Salamah College (sister
school), Al Amanah College Bankstown
and Al Amanah College Liverpool campuses.
The students presented outstanding speeches
on a variety of topics. Thankyou to all the teachers
and parents who were part of making this
day a success and congratulations to the following
winners:
Year Three: Bakr El Zahab - Liverpool Campus
Year Four: Najiha Khan - Salamah College
Year Five: Hadi Tabbara - Liverpool Campus
Year Six: Haniah Siddiqui - Liverpool Campus
On Thursday 22 September, 2016, Year One
went on an excursion to the Sydney Powerhouse
Museum to learn about transport.
After a very long bus trip, we arrived at the
museum and began our tour. Students explored
a variety of transport systems from
Year One Excursion
the past including an old horse-drawn
carriage, a steam train, and an old tram.
We also saw enormous aeroplanes hanging
from the museum ceiling. The students
began learning about the different
components of transport such as engines
and wheels. We ended our tour by making
our own future transport. Year One had a
fantastic time and are very exciting to continue
learning about transport this term.
2016 NAPLAN Achievements
Newsletter 2013
This year’s NAPLAN results indicate an overall
positive growth for our school. Below are
some of the highlights;
Years Five, Seven and Nine have achieved
above the state’s average score in Spelling,
Years Three, Five and Nine have
achieved above states’ average score in writing
Years Five and Seven are above the state’s
average score in Grammar and Punctuation.
In fact, the Year Five cohorts did not only
score well above the state average in the areas
mentioned but achieved considerably higher
average scores in writing and Grammar and
Punctuation in comparison to other Australian
Independent Schools.
What is also particularly important to note
is the high growth rates evident across most
the NAPLAN areas for Years Five, Seven
and Nine. Student growth rates are calculated
by comparing their current and past
NAPLAN achievements.
The Year Seven students exceeded the states
average scaled growth rate in the areas of
Spelling and Numeracy, Year Nine in Numeracy,
Spelling and Grammar and
Punctuation, whilst Year Five in the
areas of Reading and Spelling.
A special thanks to all the teachers and
students who worked hard this year to
achieve these pleasing results. We wish
everyone continuous progress in the
upcoming years.
Al Amanah College Students Wearing Uniform with Pride
As we approach the end of the year and
various year levels are finishing their formal
classes and moving into examinations,
a number of students may become lax in
their adherence to our policies around
uniform. For our Years Seven to Eleven
students there are a number of weeks of
formal assessments to go before completing
the year. It is a timely reminder to all
parents and students that if students are
not in FULL UNIFORM they will not be
permitted to attend their graduation ceremonies.
A big thankyou to parents for their support
in ensuring their children are wearing the
correct school uniform. Often the colder
months will bring a drop off in the standard
of uniform being worn each day, however
we are receiving a significant number
of compliments from various parts of the
community and visitors to the school regarding
how good our students look and
the pride they clearly show in their school.
School Hats - ‘No hat, play under the shelter.’
The time has come!!! The sun’s intensity is
building and we need to protect the children’s
skin once again. For those who need a
new hat, please visit the office any Tuesday
to purchase one.
The HSC exams commenced on 13
October and concluded on 3 November.
It was spread over four weeks. A majority
of our students have been quite
pleased with 2016 HSC exam timetable
because in most cases students have
some breaks between exams for revision
and past exam practice. Throughout
the exam period, the graduating
class have maintained contact with
their teachers either in person or via
Newsletter 2013
Al Amanah College
HSC Exams 2016
email and Moodle. It is strongly encouraged
that students maintain contact
with the individual subject teachers for
ongoing support and provision of feedback
on responses to exam type questions
in order to maximise their outcomes
in the exam.
At this crucial stage of the schooling
life, students must maintain focus on
studies refine their exam skills in order
to pick up on their speed in thinking and
writing. Practising writing responses
to past HSC exams under time constraints
is an effective strategy to
strengthen exam skills. The use of
BOSTES provided marking criteria and
marking guidelines to assess responses
is also important for HSC students during
the exam period.
On behalf of the staff and students, I
would like to wish excellence and success
to 2016 HSC class.
The 2016 HSC class worked well to make
a range of applications prior to their HSC
exams. It has been very pleasing to note a
number of the students have been offered
courses based on their academic, leadership
and volunteering history.
Making applications such as application
to the Universities Admission Centre,
university early offer programs, scholarships
and providing a host of substantiating
documents with applications can be
daunting. Hence, it is strongly recommended
that senior students begin collecting
and filing documents over time as they
are advised to do over their studies in
University Updates
Year Eleven and Year Twelve. This will
ensure they focus on studies alone as the
HSC Trial and HSC exams approach.
After the HSC exams the graduating class
must pay particular attention to various
dates in relation to university offers and
making adjustments to their preferred
courses. Important dates and events can
be accessed at:
http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/
check-change/
Scholarships for a range of courses commencing
in 2017 remain open until after
the HSC exams. Students are encouraged
to make applications for scholarships after
assessing their eligibility. The following
URL provides a host of information for a
range of scholarships and the application
process.
https://www.scholarships.org.au/index
The HSC Class of 2016 have been a memorable
cohort and it has been a pleasure to
work with individuals of such maturity
and dedication.
Study Tips for Year Ten Students
There are only a few weeks left for the Yearly
Examinations. To maximise the potential
to achieve their personal best, students need
to plan an extensive study regime. Time
management and effective study plan are
absolutely essential for achieving that goal.
Students need to reflect on their goals for
Term Four and with assistance of their year
advisors need to implement strategies to
achieve success. The following are some
tips for a successful result:
Ten Habits of Highly Effective Students
Some people believe that really successful
students are just born that way. True, some
students are able to breeze through school
with little or no effort. However, the vast
majority of successful students achieve their
success by developing and applying effective
study habits.
The following are the top ten study habits
employed by highly successful students. So if
you want to become a successful student,
don't get discouraged, don't give up, just
work to develop each of the study habits
below and you're see your grades go up,
your knowledge increase and your ability to
learn and assimilate information improve.
1. Do not try cramming all you are studying
into one session.
Successful students typically space their
work out over shorter periods of time
and rarely try to cram all of their studying
into just one or two sessions. If you
want to become a successful student then
you need to learn to be consistent in your
studies and to have regular, yet shorter,
study periods.
2. Plan when you are going to study.
Successful students schedule specific
times throughout the week when they
are going to complete their studying --
and then they stick with their schedule.
Students who study sporadically and
whimsically typically do not perform as
well as students who have a set study
schedule.
3. Study at the same time.
Not only is it important that you plan
when you're going to study but that you
also create a consistent, daily study routine.
When you study at the same time
each day and week your studying will
become a regular part of your life.
You'll be mentally and emotionally
more prepared for each study session
and each study session will become
more productive.
4. Each study time should have a specific
goal.
Studying without direction is not effective.
You need to know exactly what
you need to accomplish during each
study session. Before you start studying
set a study session goal that supports
your overall academic goal (i.e. memorize
30 vocabulary words in order to
ace the vocabulary section on an upcoming
Arabic test.)
5.Never procrastinate during your planned
study session.
It is very easy and common to put off
your study session because of lack of
interest in the subject, because you
have other things you need to get done
first or just because the assignment is
hard. Successful students DO NOT
procrastinate when studying. If you
procrastinate during your study session,
your studying will become much
less effective and you may not get everything
accomplished that you need to.
Procrastination also leads to rushing,
and rushing is the number one cause of
errors.
6. Start with the most difficult subject
first.
As your most difficult assignment or
subject will require the most effort and
mental energy you should start with it
first. Once you've completed the most
difficult work it will be much easier to
complete the rest of your work. Believe
it or not, starting with the most difficult
work will greatly improve the effectiveness
of your study sessions and
your academic performance.
7. Always review your notes before starting
an assignment.
Obviously, before you can review your
notes you must first have notes. Always
make sure to take good notes in
class. Before you start each study session
and before you start a particular
assignment, review your notes thoroughly
to make sure you know how to
complete the assignment correctly.
8. Make sure you're not disturbed while
you are studying
When you're disturbed while you're
studying you (1) lose your train of
thought and (2) you get distracted --
both of which will lead to very ineffective
studying. Before you start studying
find a place where you won't be disturbed.
9. Use study groups effectively
Ever heard the phrase "two heads are
better than one?" Well this can be especially
true when it comes to studying.
Working in groups enables you to
(1) get help from other students when
you're struggling to understand a concept,
(2) complete assignments more
quickly, and (3) teach others whereby
helping both the other student and
yourself to internalize the subject matter.
However, study groups can become
very ineffective if they're not
structured and if groups members come
unprepared. Effective students use
study groups effectively.
10.Review your notes and schoolwork and
over the weekend.
Successful students review what
they've learned during the week over
the weekend. This way, you’re well
prepared to continue learning new
concepts at the beginning of each week
that build upon previous coursework
and knowledge acquired the previous
week.
Students can also access information on
study plans, study skills and time management
plans on Moodle.
Newsletter 2013
Al Amanah College
Eight out of ten Australian parents are concerned about their child’s eating habits. It’s not unusual for a child to love a particular food one
day and refuse it the next. Refusing new food tastes and textures is common in children and it’s often a behavioural issue, or can be due to a
genuine dislike of a certain food, or it may be because your child has ‘filled up’ outside of meal times. A child who refuses a food may be trying
to assert their independence to see how you will react.
Here are some tips to cope with fussy eating behaviours:
Solutions for Fussy Eaters
Ensure everyone who feeds your child agrees on how to deal with your child’s requests and refusals. For example, you may decide to put a
twenty minute time limit on mealtimes to prevent them dragging on, or you may decide that any requests for a different meal will be not be
met. Everyone who helps your child at mealtimes needs to stick to the plan so it is constantly reinforced.
Stay calm when dealing with your child’s food fussiness. The more fuss that is made in return and the more emotional you get, the more
charged meal time will become and your child will realise their behaviour is getting the attention they desire. By remaining calm, you will
help to diffuse the situation and your child will realise their behaviour is not getting them any extra attention.
As soon as your child is old enough, serve them the same meal as the rest of the family. It is best to avoid getting stuck in the habit of taking
special requests!
Sometimes life for children is too exciting to spend time eating. Therefore it is important to make meal times a happy time for the family.
If it becomes stressful, the child will not enjoy it and neither will you!
Do not give up and keep trying, a child may need to be exposed to a new food up to ten times before they will eat it.
Introduce new foods when you know your child will be hungry, as there is more chance they will try something new when they are hungry.
Do not offer a replacement food if what you offer is rejected. Unless a child is unwell they will never voluntarily starve themselves. The
more fuss that is made, the more likely that this behaviour will become entrenched.
If your child flat-out refuses to eat the meal you have prepared and then claims to be hungry before bed, what should you do? It is really up
to the parent and their individual preferences to decide. Some parents will present the same meal later if the child is hungry and see if they
eat it then, while others will choose to offer a replacement snack such as a banana and a cup of milk. Whatever you decide, if you are offering
another food, make sure it’s healthy and nutritious.
Fire Drill
On Thursday 27 October, Al Amanah College conducted
its annual fire drill. Students and staff members proved
themselves to be extremely organised. It took less than
two minutes to evacuate the whole building. Implementation
of the evacuation procedure was fast and wellcoordinated.
Congratulation to everyone on their best effort so far.
