Entirely woven (NOT PRINTED) in silver-gray and black silk, ONE
HALF-PAGE, THREE FULL-PAGE ILLUSTRATIONS, and decorative
borders and initials on every page. TEXT: of the utmost rarity, this wholly
unorthodox Book of Prayers is one of between fifty and sixty books woven
with silver and black thread on silk looms programmed using the punched
card system developed by Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1843). The books
were custom bound, and this copy was bound by LESORT in Paris, who
specialized in devotional books. The sources for the illustrations have

Extraordinaire livre tissé sur soie en argent et noir avec 3 illustrations
pleine-page en utilisant un mécanisme qui sélectionne les fils de chaîne à
l’aide d’un programme inscrit sur des cartes perforées inventé par Joseph
Marie Jacquard (1752-1843). Le ,métier Jacquard’ est un précurseur des
ordinateurs modernes et il fut dans ce cas utilisé presque comme une
imprimante en produisant ligne par ligne le texte et les images en soie.
Les livres tissés sur soie au 19e siècle sont une spécialité lyonnaise. La
maison J. A. Henry fabriqua en 1886-1887 ce célèbre “Livre de prières”
dont seulement 60 exemplaires furent produits en deux ans. Le seul
autre texte tissé par Henry était un poème tiré à 3 exemplaires. Les livres
