all the same format, maps & plates). It was immediately recognized as
a travel classic when first published in 1799. With the Appendix by the
famous geographer Major Rennell. One of ‘the most important travelbooks
of modern times’.

a large folding map with hand-coloured lines of the routes. RARE FIRST
EDITION OF THE IMPORTANT POSTHUMOUSLY PUBLISHED
JOURNALS OF mUNGO PARK’S RETURN TO THE NIGER and with
John Whishaw’s extensive biographical introduction. Until the publication
of Park’s book in 1799 hardly anything was known of the interior of Africa,
apart from the North-East region and coastal area. Park’s travels had an
immediate success. It has become a classic of travel literature, and its
scientific observations on the botany and meteorology of the region, and on
the social and domestic life of the Negroes, have remained of lasting value.

differentes Langues de toutes les Nations connues: contenant ce qu’il
y a de plus remarquable, ...avec les moeurs de habitans... pour former
un système complet d’Histoire & de Géographie moderne ... Enrichi
