“WElcome to the first journal of the year 2020!”
I cannot believe I am hearing myself say that, as
it sounds like the intro to a Star Trek episode!
Some will be glad that 2019 has finally ended,
what with the media being full of politics,
presumptions and scaremongering. Our
industry teetering backwards and forwards as
some organisations continued to exit the UK
and others expanded and invested providing
large value opportunities for businesses within
the Furniture & Interiors sector.
At CFAS we have taken the decision to freeze
our 2019 prices, providing both existing and
new members the opportunity to promote their
products and/or services, allowing them to remain
competitive and reach a wide audience. We are
continuing with our four seasonal journals: winter,
spring, summer and autumn, and not forgetting the
highly regarded CDW festival Journal.

Even though we have more Brexit uncertainty whilst
the intricacies are being discussed, resolved and
rolled out, there are a few things we can be certain
of: the dominance of Social Media, the continuing
acknowledgement of environmental considerations
and the importance of workplace health and
wellbeing, diversity and inclusion.
This is why the CFAS journals and social media
platforms are providing our members the
opportunity to promote their expertise in a highly
competitive market, where price and quality has to
be within a holistic offering to be recognised.

ACCESS ALL AREAS
Disabled provision is a key element of inclusivity, says Sam Palmer, Project Manager for Crown Sports Lockers
How does the effect of equality law impact changing areas - possibly
one of the trickiest aspects of provision to deliver?
For sites and venues to provide fully inclusive facilities, owners and
operators have to think hard about how disabled users can most
easily and appropriately access and enjoy them. Changing areas
present first and last impressions for members and guests so they
must create a favourable climate for disabled users too.
Can wheel­chair visitors easily gain access to changing rooms, for
example? Do doors open automatically, are aisles sufficiently wide to
take wheel­chairs and are lockers designated for them.
Lockers can offer wheelchair access underneath to allow users to
come up close to the doors, which then open at a convenient height
for them. New build and upgraded facilities increasingly include
showers for disabled users, whether wheelchair-bound or not, and for
the partially sighted or blind, locker doors can carry tactile door
number­ing. Virtual tours of facilities, posted on a site's website, can
also give ample indication of the degree to which they cater for
disabled visitors.
Equality law applies to any business that provides goods, facilities or
services to members of the public, including health and fitness clubs,
sports clubs, swimming pools, leisure centres, golf and tennis clubs,
rowing clubs and sporting venues, the Equality and Human Rights
Commission states. It also governs community provision such as
schools, universities, colleges and academies and covers after-school
activities and out-of-hours clubs.
Regarding health and safety and disabled people, ensure that any
action you take is proportionate to the risk. "Disabled people are
entitled to make the same choices and to take the same risks within
the same limits as others," states the Commission.
Health and safety law does not require you as a service provider to
remove all conceiv­able risk but to "ensure that risk is properly
appreciated, understood and managed".
"Do not make assumptions but assess the person's situation and
consider reasonable adjustments to reduce any risks, your duty not to
discriminate and, where appropriate, to consider the disabled person's
own views," it adds.
The key is to strike a balance between protecting against the risk
and restricting disabled people from access to services. In today's
burgeoning spa sector, relaxation for all is a keystone of operator
strategy. The AA 4-star Lincombe Hall Hotel, Torquay, has recently
opened a £2m high-end luxury spa to create a year-round
destination at the boutique hotel.
Access for wheelchair visitors is a feature of the luxury facility.
"Disabled toilets and showers are available in the male and female
changing areas," confirms Simon Bantock of Ashton House Design,
which conceived the layout and specified all the interior surfacings
and fittings - working with changing room specialists Crown Sports
Lockers on the fit-out.
"Ramps allow wheelchair guests to conveniently access treatment
rooms, lap and spa pools, pool loungers and changing areas,
thanks to level access throughout."

The history of office design is a fascinating topic and when
embarking on your own office refurbishment, it's worth
understanding where the current trends evolved from.
The word 'Office' originates from the
Latin word 'Officium', meaning 'service'
and evidence suggests dedicated
spaces were used to conduct official
business as far back as the Romans!
However, it was centuries before
dedicated office spaces developed in
Britain.
In 1726, the first purpose-built office
building was established in Westminster,
London - the Old Admiralty Building -
which is still used today. Its decor was
as grand as its architecture; with velvet
upholstered chairs, elaborate
boardrooms and artwork covered walls.
However, the dawn of the 20 th century
brought a new era of industrial revolution
that turned employees into machines.
Frederick Winslow Taylor transformed
the office into an organised assembly
line. Highly populated areas of individuals
preformed repetitive tasks in rows of
desks, this became the 'Taylorist Office'.
The rigid structure of the Taylorist Office
continued for the next 50 years but the
impact of working in such close
proximity with peers began to have a
negative effect. The Quickborner
consulting group began to crack the
regimented style by suggesting
improvements on lighting, ventilation,
and introducing the 'Office Landscape'.
They started to understand the flow of
the office and began blurring boundaries
and hierarchy with desk rotation,
partitioning, and plants. Parallel to the
'Office Landscape', inventor Robert
Propst founded the 'Action Office' in
1964, which was a commercial crash at
the time due to supply and demand but
is now a movement that has shaped our
office evolution.
The movement introduced flexibility
whist providing privacy - the theory was
ingenious - but it meant larger footprints
that were too expensive.
Enter the 'Cubical' system! Designer
Douglas Ball modified the 'Action Office'
solution ... on paper. The style was suited
for mass production; 3 privacy walls,
focused working, enough personal
office equipment, and the ability to
reconfigure with ease. Luckily when Ball
viewed his first installation, he realised
this 'flexible layout' was in fact a
horrendous sea of 6ft screens that
created a labyrinth of dark enclosures.
By the end of the 20th century, the
styles developed by Taylor, Quickborner
Consultancy, Propst, and Ball were all
paramount in shaping the foundations of
the next era, the digital office.

NeW Office furniture re-manufacturing standard from fira
As part of a wider Circular Economy Project, product remanufacturing standard will hopefully
the Furniture Industry Research Association has support existing companies that have embraced
published a new Remanufacturing Standard. remanufacturing, encourage new companies
into remanufacturing and ensure that companies
procuring remanufactured goods do so from
trusted suppliers.

Remanufacturing involves returning a previously
used product to a function and form equivalent
to that of a new product. In some cases,

condition beyond its original state, by introducing
new components that correct or improve the
original product design, provide additional
functionality or aesthetic enhancements.
Whilst remanufacturing affords huge opportunities
for businesses to reduce their environmental
footprints via procurement, FIRA recognises
that not all products placed on the market lend
themselves to remanufacturing due to constraints
with the original product design or the availability of
replacement parts.
The aim of the FIRA Remanufacturing Standard
is to support the Circular Economy, ensuring that
the maximum value possible is realised from the
material and energy invested in the products we
use in the workplace.
The FIRA Remanufacturing Standard also aims to
give confidence to specifiers, procurement teams
and end users that ‘second life’ furniture does not
mean second best. The development of a FIRA
The standard has been produced with a view to
allow third party verification of the remanufacturer’s
product claims regarding the product and its
environmental credentials.
Most importantly, the Remanufacturing standard
will help to promote end of life considerations in
new furniture designs, on the assumption that
customers will expect their furniture to be taken
through a remanufacturing process.
Sections within the Standard include:
• Remanufacturing process, including product
custody, product inspection, product assembly,
product testing
• Replacement parts/components
• Warranty, including warranty period and warranty
register
• Resource and waste stream management,
including compliance and waste hierarchy
• Environmental product information, including
mandatory product information, optional product
information and verification of optional product
information
• Product labelling
The Remanufacturing Standard is available to
all members of the Furniture Industry Research
