<strong>Nobel</strong> took a keen Interesl in social<br />
questions, and is known to have held radical<br />
views on many contemporary problems.<br />
His scientilic and industrial activities took<br />
him to most EuroDean and American<br />
countries.<br />
He lived in Paris lor a number of years,<br />
bul planned to return to Sweden and setlle<br />
down lor good al Karlskoga, where he<br />

On 10 December, 1896, before the plans<br />
could be realised. he died at hrs home in<br />
San Flemo in llaly.<br />
Alfred <strong>Nobel</strong> was a lonely man and was<br />
often in poor health. He was very modest,<br />
often appearing shy to other people.<br />
Above all, he was engrossed in scientific<br />
rdeas and in the practrcal management ol<br />
his many European enterprises, and<br />
devoted himself night and day to his studies<br />
and work. His dream was to be of service to<br />
mankind.<br />
In January 1897 it was learned thal he<br />
had left the bulk ol his considerablestate<br />
to a fund, the interest on which was to be<br />
awarded annually to the persons whose<br />
work had been of the greatest benetito<br />
mankind.<br />
The statutes ot the foundation which<br />
administered the fund - the <strong>Nobel</strong><br />
Foundation - were adooted on 29 June<br />
His Will<br />
"TH E whote ol my remaining reatisable ostate shall be dsalt with<br />
in the following way: the capilal, invested in sale securities by my<br />
executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be<br />
annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the<br />
preceding yea( shall have conterred the grealest benefit on mankind.<br />
The said inlerest shall b€ divided into five equal parls, which shall<br />
be apportionsd as tollows: one part to lhe person who shall have<br />
mad€ the most important discovery or invention within the field ol<br />
physics; one part to the person who shall have made lhe most<br />
important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to ths person<br />
who shall have made th6 most important discovery within the domain<br />
of physiology or medicine; ons part to the person who shall have<br />
oroduced in the field ot literature the mosl outslandino work of an<br />
idealistic t€ndency; and one part to the person rvho sFall hava done<br />
th€ most or the best work tor fraternity between the natlons, lor the<br />
abolition or roduction of standing armies and lor the holding and<br />
promotion ol p€ac€ congr€sses.<br />
The prizes for physics and chemistry shall b€ awarded by tho<br />
Swsdish Academy of Sciences; that lor physiological or medical<br />
works by the Karolinska Institute in Slockholm; that for literaturg by<br />
lhe Academy in Stockholm; and that for champions of peace by a<br />
committee of tive psrsons to be €lectsd by ths Norwegian Storting.<br />
It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideralion<br />
whatever shall b€ given to the nationality ot the candidates, bul that<br />
ths most worthy shall receive the priz€, whothsr he be a Scandinavian<br />
or nol,"<br />
