BackgroundThis short course will cover the essential points in writing the major sections of a scientific paper, whether for publicationin technical journals or for an academic thesis. The use of grammatically correct English in the context of the style andtone adopted in academic scientific writing is stressed.Special attention will be given to current developments in information technology that has changed the way scientificpapers are written today. Key aspects in writing the Abstract, the Introduction, the Materials and Methods, the Results,the Discussions are reviewed. The References section and the supporting Tables, Figures and Appendices are alsocovered in the discussions.Besides the writing of scientific papers for publication, this course on technical writing will also touch on the writing ofprogress reports (Quarterly Reports, Annual Reports, etc).Finally, this module will delve into the re-casting of scientific writing into non-technical articles for general readership.There will be occasions when researchers have to present their scientific achievements in a non-technical style that iseasily understood by the public.This course in technical writing for scientific research will consist of a series of lectures interspersed with exercises thatallow participants to put into practice what has been learnt. Case studies based on actual published papers that haveappeared in leading international journals will touch on what journal editors and referees look for in a manuscript.Participants will be advised on and how to improve the chances of a manuscript being accepted for publication.The FacilitatorDr.H.Y. Yeang was formerly Head of Biotechnology and Research at the Rubber ResearchInstitute of Malaysia. He has published over 85 peer-reviewed journal papers in the areas ofplant science, biotechnology, biochemistry and immunology.
