Mesej dari PresidenMessage from the Presidentteknologi dan inovasi, <strong>Akademi</strong> <strong>Sains</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong>telah memulakan inisiatif ‘Saintis PenyelidikanTerunggul <strong>Malaysia</strong>’ (TRSM) untuk mengenal pastidan mengiktiraf saintis terbaik <strong>Malaysia</strong> yang aktifmenongkah sempadan dalam penyelidikan danpembangunan untuk menjana pengetahuanbaru, membuat penemuan, mewujudkan peluangtambah nilai dan menterjemahkan penyelidikanmereka dalam hasil yang bermaknadan memberi impak ketara seterusnya memberisumbangan besar kepada transformasi sosioekonominegara. Pangkalan data TRSM disiapkanpada 2011 dan bersedia untuk menerima datadaripada penyelidik <strong>Malaysia</strong>.Dalam landskap STI <strong>Malaysia</strong>, ketersediaan modalinsan yang kompeten dalam rantaian nilai R&Dsetiap sektor bermula daripada penyelidikanhingga pengkomersilan adalah faktor kejayaankritikal bagi kemajuan ekonomi, kesejahteraanmasyarakat dan daya saing dalam dunia yangsemakin global. Maklumat mengenai keupayaandan kecekapan penyelidik berbakat kita mestidisebarkan di peringkat kebangsaan danantarabangsa untuk menarik jaringan hubungan,kerjasama dan pelaburan dari seluruh dunia.Dalam konteks ini, diharapkan inisiatif danpangkalan data TRSM akan menjadi titik rujukanpusat berkaitan saintis terkemuka di <strong>Malaysia</strong>ke arah mewujudkan hab untuk penyebaranpengetahuan yang boleh merangsang pertumbuhanSTI di <strong>Malaysia</strong>.Dalam usaha menyediakan platform untukmembincangkan pembangunan dan hasilpenyelidikan akademik di rantau Pasifik terutamanyamelibatkan penyelidikan yang bolehmenyumbang dalam menangani cabaran perubahanglobal, <strong>Akademi</strong> dengan kerjasamaMOSTI, Persatuan <strong>Sains</strong> Pasifik, ICSU ROAP danISTIC telah menganjurkan 22nd Pacific <strong>Science</strong>Congress pada bulan Jun. Ia juga adalah satuusaha kerjasama serta perkongsian denganAKEPT, USM, UKM, UPM, UTM, UiTM, UM, UNIMAS,UMS, Universiti Teknikal <strong>Malaysia</strong> Melaka, MPOC,UNESCO, <strong>Akademi</strong> <strong>Sains</strong> bagi Negara-NegaraMembangun, IAP, Biro Konvensyen dan Pameran<strong>Malaysia</strong> dan Suruhanjaya Tenaga <strong>Malaysia</strong>.Dalam era ekonomi berteraskan pengetahuan,adalah penting bagi ASM untuk membina rangkaiankerjasama yang kukuh dengan <strong>Akademi</strong><strong>Sains</strong> lain dan organisasi sains antarabangsa.Rangkaian ini bukan sahaja meningkatkannovation, the Academy of <strong>Science</strong>s <strong>Malaysia</strong> embarkedon the ‘Top Research Scientists <strong>Malaysia</strong>’(TRSM) initiative to identify and recognise top notch<strong>Malaysia</strong>n scientists who are actively pushing theboundaries of research and development to generatenew knowledge, make discoveries, createvalue-added opportunities and translate their researchinto meaningful and impactful outcomesthat significantly contribute to the socio-economictransformation of the nation. The TRSM databasewas completed in 2011 and is ready to be populatedwith data by <strong>Malaysia</strong>n researchers.In <strong>Malaysia</strong>’s STI landscape, the availability ofcompetent people in every sector of the R&Dvalue-chain from research to commercialisation isa critical success factor for economic advancement,societal well-being and competitivenessin an increasingly globalised world. Informationon capabilities and competence of our talentedresearchers must be disseminated nationally andinternationally in order to attract linkages, collaborationand investment from around the world.In this context, it is hoped that the TRSM initiativeand database will serve as a centralised point ofreference on leading scientists in <strong>Malaysia</strong> towardscreating a hub for knowledge dissemination thatcan spur the growth of STI in <strong>Malaysia</strong>.In the provision of a platform to discuss the developmentand outcome of academic research inthe Pacific region especially with research thatcould contribute towards the challenges of globalchange, the Academy in collaboration withMOSTI, the Pacific <strong>Science</strong> Association, ICSU ROAPand ISTIC organized the 22nd Pacific <strong>Science</strong>Congress in June. It was also a collaborative effortwith the partnership of AKEPT, USM, UKM, UPM,UTM, UiTM, UM, UNIMAS, UMS, Universiti Teknikal<strong>Malaysia</strong> Melaka, MPOC, UNESCO, the Academyof <strong>Science</strong>s for the Developing World, IAP, the <strong>Malaysia</strong>nConvention and Exhibition Bureau and theEnergy Commission of <strong>Malaysia</strong>.In the era of knowledge economy, it is vital for ASMto establish strong networks with sister Academiesand international science organisations.
