Page 2 San Sebastian Catholic Church July 21, 2013Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeLISTENThe first reading tells of the “annunciation” of thebirth of Isaac. It is profoundly mysterious, beginningwith the appearance of the “three men.” Thisreading illustrates God’s active role in our history. The second reading treats a universal experience—suffering.Paul sees suffering as the markof discipleship. He finds joy in the suffering heendures because it is for the sake of the church.Through his preaching he hopes all people willcome to accept Christ. The Gospel paints a lovely picture of Jesus atrest among his friends. Luke has placed the incidentright after the parable of the Good Samaritan. But lest “activism” be seen as the only path,we now hear Jesus’ call to sit quietly and listen tothe word of God. We have to be like both of thesisters. Even in our harried and noisy world, thereis an insistent call to sit back quietly and listen toJesus. Copyright © J. S. Page 4 San Sebastian Catholic Church July 21, 2013Parish and CommunityDIOCESAN CATHOLIC WOMEN’S CONFERENCESaturday . August 10, 2013At the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverwalk.Women of all ages and backgrounds are invitedto attend: remarkable speakers, prayer, confession, mass and fellowship. Please visitwww.floridacatholicwomen.org for tickets.Year of Faith Sound Bite for July 21: In the New Covenant, prayer is the living relationship ofthe children of God with their Father who is good beyond measure, with his Son Jesus Christand with the Holy Spirit. The grace of the Kingdom is “the union of the entire holy and royalTrinity….with the whole human spirit.” Thus, the life of prayer is the habit of being in thepresence of the thrice‐holy God and in communion with him. This communion of life is alwayspossible because, through Baptism, we have already been united with Christ. Prayer isChristian in sofar as it is communion with Christ and extends throughout the Church, which ishis Body. Its dimensions are those of Christ’s love. (CCC2565) Since Christ, sent by the Father,is the source and origin of the whole apostolate of the Church, the success of the lay apostolate dependsupon the laity’s living union with Christ, in keeping with the Lord’s words, “He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit, for without me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). This life of infinite union with Christ in theChurch is nourished by spiritual aids which are common to all faithful, especially active participation in thesacred liturgy.
