Results Records and results of the study listed above are organized in tables 1 and 2 to present the totals, frequency of generic representation of the families, and the relative size of the families in terms of these frequencies. An inventory is thus obtained of fungi containing 113 specific and 16 nonspecific taxa of rusts in 24 genera and 9 families/2 groups; 37 specific and 2 nonspecific taxa of smuts in 14 genera and 7 families; and 4 specific and 2 nonspecific taxa of their allies in 2 genera and 2 families. Discussion With few exceptions, these fungi are from the more accessible parts of the country in lowland interior Burma. Specimens are lacking from difficult, outlying, rugged, rainy areas bordering Indo- Himalaya, Sino-Tibet, Indo-China, Thai-Malaya, Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The report therefore does not convey the full gamut of morphologic and taxonomic diversity, density, and distribution relative to this group of fungi. Their demographics and dynamics will change once these land and sea border areas are thoroughly and extensively explored. The genera Achrotelium and Newinia provide examples of host-parasite relationships and distributions among rusts. Achrotelium ichnocarpi first reported by the Sydows in 1928 from a host plant of Ichnocarpus species in the Philippines was also collected from the same host genus in central Burma in 1971. Newinia first encountered in Burma in 1973 on a member of Bignoniaceae was later found in neighboring Thailand and far-away Nigeria in Africa on the same host family (Cummins & Hiratsuka 2003). Hence, many of the fungi listed from the surrounding countries are expected to be found in Burma eventually once its mycoflora is investigated. Newinia is a dual and parallel member of both Phragmidiaceae and Uropyxidaceae for it can be ascribed to the former on spermogonia type 7, and to the latter on teliospores (Cummins & Hiratsuka 2003). Newinia thus illustrates a problem with morphology-based taxonomic parameters for delimitating suprageneric ranks. It is listed twice hereinbefore though counted once under Uropyxidaceae for the results.
