Table 1. Distribution of survey species at Waikumete Cemetery by Burial Areas (1-5). "Other"
corresponds to the gumland scrub, gullies and as yet open grassland, which encompass the
southwestern portion of the cemetery. Key to frequencies, "+" < 5 plants seen, "o" occasional,
"c" common, "ab" abundant.

By the way emend the text on the Caladenia if you like. We no longer have Caladenia - all of
them except C. atradenia (which is now Stegostyla atradenia) are transferred to Petalochilus
thus (as I sent to DoC staff yesterday):
"In the advent of the Polish botanist's ill-informed "rush to press orchid genera mess - we now
have David Jones et al trying to head the Pole off with their own creations. Thus we now
have Caladenia carved up into a number of new genera. Within New Zealand we now have
two genera - Petalochilus and Stegostyla which effectively replace Caladenia here (Caladenia
is now endemic to Southern Australia). Unfortunately the paper in which this is done is a
messy rush job with some silly mistakes. Some issues - like, for example, the status of the
perceived to be mutant genus and species Petalochilus, P. saccatus and P. calyciformis is not
really made very clear, and i am not certain if we should be listing these two ?extinct "species"
in the new DoC magnum opus. Eitherway the new genera seem robust both morphologically
and at DNA (ITS) level.
Anyway new combinations for New Zealand (also Rod those marked * are listed as
Threatened to some degree):
Petalochilus R.S.Rogers (c. 40 spp., in Australia, New Caledonia, parts of Indonesia and New
Zealand)
Type: P. calyciformis R.S.Rogers
New Zealand Taxa
*P. alatus (R.Br.) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem (Caladenia alata R.Br.) – Note authority given in
Jones et al. (2001) is incorrect.
P. bartlettii (Hatch) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem. (C. bartlettii (Hatch) D.L.Jones, Molloy et
M.A.Clem
P. calyciformis R.S.Rogers
P. chlorostylus (D.L.Jones, Molloy et M.A.Clem.) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem (C. chlorostyla
D.L.Jones, Molloy et M.A.Clem.)
P. minor (Hook.f.) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem. (C. minor Hook.f.)
*P. nothofageti (D.L.Jones, Molloy et M.A.Clem.) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem (C. nothofageti
D.L.Jones, Molloy et M.A.Clem.)
P. saccatus R.S.Rogers
P. variegatus (Colenso) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem. (C. variegata Colenso)
Note I have not yet agreed, nor has Brian Molloy that P. fuscatus (C. fuscata), and P. pusillus
(C. pusilla) are really in New Zealand. Nor is it clear what the status of P. chlorostylus/P.minor
or P. nothofageti is. Some authors believe P.chlorostylus is a synonym of P. minor and most
of us believe that P. nothofageti is a colour variant of P. chlorostylus. I will check status of P.
calyciformis and P. saccatus with B.P.J. Molloy.
Stegostyla D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem. (c. 20 spp. in Australia and New Zealand)
Type: Stegostyla gracilis (R.Br.) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem.
New Zealand taxa
*S. atradenia (D.L.Jones, Molloy et M.A.Clem.) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem (C. atradenia
D.L.Jones, Molloy et M.A.Clem.)
S. lyallii (Hook.f.) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem. (C. lyallii Hook.f.)
Note the authors clearly don't accept that S.alpina is in New Zealand (I know Molloy most
certainly does not accept that it is - but keep an open mind).
Please pass on to the DoC Botanist network."
