Species Listed as Permitted Alien Species
The list of species that are permitted for introduction into South Africa is based on species that have already
been introduced into South Africa and have been adjudged not to be invasive. This list will be compiled over
time, to facilitate the ease of introduction of species with an acceptably low risk of becoming invasive.
Permitted Species are those that have been found or ascertained to have a negligible or no risk of invasion
as a species, and which are therefore allowed to be brought into the country without having to undergo a
Species Risk Assessment. The authorities will retain the right to require new genotypes (e.g. cultivars,
varieties, genotypes) to undergo a Species Risk Assessment.
The approval to import a species into the country without any permit conditions may result in the species
being put onto the list of Permitted Species.
The status as a Permitted Species does not absolve an importer from the requirements of a Vector Risk
Assessment.
It will be possible to appeal against the presence of a species in the Permitted Species list, at the cost of the
person or group lodging the appeal. This cost may be waived should the appeal succeed.
