Appendix 3
Species Listed as Invasive Species
1. The species are listed alphabetically by scientific name for each of the following groupings:
3.1 Mammals
3.2 Birds
3.3 Reptiles
3.4 Amphibians
3.5 Fishes (Fresh-Water)
3.6 Fishes (Marine) and Other Marine Species
3.7 Invertebrates (Fresh-water)
3.7 Invertebrates (Terrestrial)
3.9 Plants
3.10 Microbes
2. The following categories of invasive species are provided for in terms of the Regulations:
Category 1a: Prohibited Invasive Species
Category 1b: Invasive Species Controlled by Programme
Category 2: Invasive Species Controlled by Area
Category 3: Invasive Species Controlled by Activity
Category 4: Extra-Limital Species
Category 5: Species Under Surveillance
3. The conditions set out in the Regulations, and in Schedule 3 to the Regulations, apply to the regulation
of the species listed in these six categories.
4. Category 4 species are only considered invasive outside of the area deemed as part of the distribution
range of a species indigenous to South Africa.
5 Category 5 species are potentially invasive species, or invasive species where the benefits of
controlling them are to be weighed up against the costs of doing so.
6. The maps showing the deemed natural distribution ranges for the extra-limital species (Category 2)
can be found in Schedule 3 to the Regulations.
7. The lists will be consolidated over the next two years, and updated on a regular basis.
