Mosses of Chile<br />

Lepidopilum erectiusculum (Taylor) Mitt.<br />

The species is given with the record “Andes Chilenses (Sachapata)“ by Mitten (1869) and is<br />

therefore included in the Chilean checklist by He (1998). The record lie in the nowadays territory<br />

of Peru and the species must therefore excluded from Chile.<br />

Leptotrichella kunzeana (Müll. Hal.) Ochyra (Dicranella kunzeana Müll. Hal., Microdus<br />

kunzeanus [Müll. Hal.] Broth.)<br />

The species is cited as Dicranella kunzeana for Chile by Mitten (1869) with the record “Chili et<br />

Peru ad Chuchero”. Therefore the species is included in the checklist of He (1998). The record of<br />

Mitten is situated in the nowadays territory of Peru and the species must therefore excluded from<br />

Chile.<br />

Muelleriella angustifolia (Hook.f. & Wilson) Dusén<br />

The species is cited by Dusén (1905a) from the Magallanes province. Following Vitt (1976) the<br />

species is endemic to Campbell Island, New Zealand. The record of Dusén will therefore belong to<br />

M. crassifolia.<br />

Orthotheciella varia (Hedw.) Ochyra<br />

The species recorded in different literature sources (e. g., Pereira et al. 2006, Buck 2002, Larraín<br />

2007a, He 1998, Müller & Pereira 2006, Ochyra & Matteri 2001, and Matteri & Schiavone 2002)<br />

as Orthotheciella varia for Chile represent in fact Cratoneuropsis relaxa subsp. minor (Ochyra et<br />

al. 2008).<br />

Philonotis fontanoides (Gillies & Grev.) A. Jaeger<br />

The species is given under the name Bartramia fontanoides with the record “Andes Chilensis,<br />

Mendoza (leg. Gillies)“ by Mitten (1869) and was therefore included in the Chilean checklist by<br />

He (1998). The record is situated in the nowadays territory of Peru and the species must therefore<br />

excluded from Chile.<br />

Plagiomnium rostratum (Schrad.) T.J. Kop.<br />

Dusén (1903b) and Cardot (1908) cited the species under the synonym Mnium rostratum from<br />

“Fuegia, Patagonia australis”. Koponen (1979) doesn’t cite this species for South America.<br />

Therefore the records of this species from the area will belong to other Plagiomnium species.<br />

Pogonatum cirratum (Sw.) Brid. subsp. fuscatum (Mitt.) Hyvönen<br />

The species is cited for Chile under the synonym Pogonatum spuriocirratum Broth. by Thériot<br />

(1926). Fide Hyvönen (1989) the distribution area of this species is restricted to East Asia,<br />

therefore the record from Chile is most unlikely.<br />

Polytrichadelphus umbrosus Mitt.<br />

He (1998) attributed the record of Mitten (1869) from “San Gavan” to Chile. In fact, San Gavan, is<br />

situated in Peru and therefore the species is excluded from the Chilean bryoflora.<br />

Pseudocrossidium mendozense (Mitt.) R.H. Zander<br />

Mitten (1869) gives a record as Tortula mendozensis from “Andes chilensis, Mendoza (leg.<br />

Gillies)“. This record is attributed in He (1998) to Chile, but in reality it is situated in the<br />

nowadays Peru.<br />

Pterygoneurum subsessilis (Brid.) Jur.<br />

Mitten (1869) gives a record as Tortula subsessilis from “Andes chilensis, Mendoza (leg. Gillies)“.<br />

This record is attributed in He (1998) to Chile, but in reality it is situated in the nowadays Peru.<br />
