Ptychomnion aciculare (Brid.) Mitt.<br />
According to Hattaway (1984) all of the Chilean collections (e.g. Mitten 1869, Dusén 1903b,<br />
Cardot 1908, Bartram 1952) under this name represent Ptychomnion cygnisetum or Ptychomnion<br />
densifolium.<br />
Ptychomnion fruticetorum Müll. Hal.<br />
This species is only known from Brazil and doesn’t occur in Chile (Robinson 1970). However,<br />
Hattaway (1984) considered it to be a form of Ptychomnion cygnisetum and placed Ptychomnion<br />
horridum and Ptychomnion subaciculare in its synonyms.<br />
Pyrrhobryum medium (Besch.) Manuel<br />
The species was excluded from the area by Matteri & Piñero (1987). The Chilean records cited by<br />
He (1998) belongs to P. mnioides.<br />
Sphagnum imbricatum (Hornsch.) Russ.<br />
Warnstorf (1911) gives a record from Chiloé. The species was excluded from the flora of the area<br />
by Flatberg (1984).<br />
Syntrichia sarconeurum (Hook. f. & Wilson) Ochyra & R.H. Zander<br />
Records from western Patagonia in southern South America (e. g., Hässel et al. 1984, Matteri &<br />
Schiavone 2002, Matteri 1982, and Matteri 1985b) are erroneous and correctly refer to Syntrichia<br />
lithophila (Ochyra & Zander 2007, Ochyra et al. 2008).<br />
Tortula vahliana (Schultz) Mont.<br />
The species was cited from Quillota for Chile by Montagne (1850). Cano & Gallego (2008) have<br />
excluded the species from the area.<br />
Family placement<br />
Families are arranged alphabetically. The taxonomic arrangement of the families and genera<br />
follows with minor exceptions the classification of Goffinet et al. (2008). Following each genus is<br />
the number of accepted taxa recorded for Chile. The 890 taxa are assigned to 230 genera in 68<br />
families.<br />
