Raabe, I have shown where possible the names used by the original
authors(s), thereby making the "Check List" a better reference work. I have
also been able to include some of the names that Raabe had omitted. I have
updated the names of several Hyphomycetes and Coelomycetes as recorded
by M. B. Ellis (1971, 1976) and by B. C. Sutton (1980) . Chupp, ʹ152ʹ,
prepared a useful monograph of the genus Cercospora. From the hosts
affected and the geographic distribution of the pathogens, I have suggested
the probable specific name for species recorded as Cercospora sp. Little has
been done to update names of the Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes. For the
Myxomycetes, I consulted G. W. Martin and C. J. Alexopoulos, "The
Myxomycetes", 1969 and for the Nematodes I used Tarjan, ʹ276, 278ʹ.
From the work of the Plant Disease Clinic, headed by Albert P.
Martinez, it is evident that the soil-inhabiting pathogens, fungi and nematodes,
are the major cause of disease in crops in the Hawaiian Islands.
An Index has been prepared of the Fungi, Bacteria and parasitic
Spermatophytes in Part 1 , as well as index of the Parasitic Nematodes. To
indicate to what major group as particular pathogen belongs, each genus
name is followed by an abbreviation; e.g. A = Ascomycetes, B = Bacteria,
Bs = Basidiomycetes, etc. Names of genera, now considered synonyms of
other genera or invalid, are underlined, as are all specific epithets. For
readers, who would have preferred the pathogens arranged alphabetically by
family and genus, a separate section is included, showing the genera
arranged by family. It is my belief that the major users of the "Check List" will
find the present arrangement very convenient.
Dr. Raabe expressed his sincere appreciation of the late Miss Marie C.
Neal of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum for her help with the plant names. I
also am indebted to her for the information in her "In Gardens of Hawaii".
Raabe also expressed his appreciation to Dr. C. A. Wismer of the Hawaiian
Sugar Planters' Association and Dr. E. J. Anderson of the Pineapple Research
Institute of Hawaii for making available unpublished information and to Dr. R.
B. Hine and the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Hawaii for
unpublished information and making possible [its] writing".
I am indebted to the members of the Department of Plant Pathology, in
particular, Dr. O. V. Holtzman, Mr. A. P. Martinez, Specialist in Plant
Pathology, and Dr. Anne M. Alvarez. Mr. Martinez made available the records
