greatly indebted to several mycologists.
Dr. Gladys E. Baker granted permission to have extracted the fungi recorded
by her in the Hawaiian Islands, including some collected or identified by her for
the first time from Hawaii. Dr. R. D. Goos sent reprints of his papers on
Hawaiian fungi. Dr. C. S. Hodges provided reprints, the loan of references and
long lists of fungi found by him in Hawaii. Dr. M. F. Stoner was a valuable
mentor. I have been encouraged by these mycologists to include fungi not
regarded as possible parasites but probably of great importance in the
degradation of plant debris. It should be noted that the collection of
Myxomycetes made by O. N. Allen is preserved in the Bishop Museum,
according to Mr. S. H. Sohmer, Chairman, Department of Botany at the
Museum.
Finally, I am greatly indebted to Dr. T. K. Hodges, Chairman of the
Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, here at Purdue University, and to
Dr. J. F. Hennen for use of his personal library and providing space in the
Arthur Herbarium to complete this project.
