1. Introduction
Preliminary remarks
With the adoption of the Ordinance on the Contained Use of Organisms (Containment Ordinance, CO) the
federal government gave the Swiss Agency for the Environment, Forests and Landscape (SAEFL) a mandate
to compile lists of classified organisms and biological containment systems (Art. 22 CO). The purpose
of these lists is to simplify and harmonise implementation of the Containment Ordinance and the related
Ordinance on Occupational Safety in Biotechnology (SAMV).
The SAEFL submits these lists to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), the Federal Veterinary Office
(FVO), the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (SFOA), the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs
(seco), the Swiss National Accident Insurance Organisation (SUVA), the Swiss Expert Committee for Biosafety
(SECB) and the Working Group of the Cantonal Enforcement Authorities (ERFA Bio) for their
views. The SAEFL publishes the present list in agreement with the above-mentioned federal authorities.
