EVALUATION OF REMOVABLE WALKER CAST AND NON REVOMABLE
FIBERGLASS OFF-BEARING CAST (T.C.C.) IN THE HEALING OF DIABETIC PLANTAR
FOOT ULCER
ABSTRACT
Objective: Evaluate the efficacy of removable cast walker walker compared to non non-removable removable
fiberglass off off-bearing bearing cast in the treatment of diabetic diabetic plantar foot ulcer.
Research design and methods methods: : Forty Forty-five five adult diabetic diabetic patients patients with non non-ischemic, ischemic, non-
infected neuropathic plantar ulcer were randomized to treatment with a non non-removable removable
fiberglass off off-bearing bearing cast ( (TCC TCC group group) ) or walker cast ( (Stabil Stabil-D D group group). ). Treatment duration
was 90 days. Percent reduction in ulcer surface area and total healing rates were evaluated
after treatment.
Results: A total of 48 patients were screened; however, two patients in the TCC group and
one in the Stabil Stabil-D D group did not complete the study and were considered dropouts. There
were no significant differences in demographic and clinic characteristics of the 45 patients
completing the study.
Seventeen patients (73.9%) in the TCC group and 16 patients (72.7%) in the Stabil Stabil-D D group
achieved healing.
Conclusions: The Stabil Stabil-D D cast walker, although removable, was equally effective as TCC
in terms of ulcer size reduction and total healing rate. The easier use of Stabil Stabil-D D may help
increase the use of off off-loading loading devices in the management of plantar neuropathic diabetic foot
ulcers.
