• 1972-1973: Realizzazione <strong>di</strong> un apparato sperimentale completo per la determ<strong>in</strong>azione dello<br />

spettro delle vibrazioni torsionali <strong>in</strong> alberi motori rotanti; <strong>in</strong> collaborazione con la Facoltà <strong>di</strong><br />

Ingegneria dell’Università <strong>di</strong> Genova;<br />

• 1974-1976: Sviluppo <strong>di</strong> un approccio perturbativo (teoria della doppia perturbazione)<br />

nell’ambito della teoria dei gruppi per la determ<strong>in</strong>azione dei term<strong>in</strong>i <strong>di</strong> <strong>in</strong>terazione tra<br />

strutture molecolari complesse; <strong>in</strong> collaborazione con l’Istituto <strong>di</strong> Chimica dell’Università <strong>di</strong><br />

Genova a l’Istituto <strong>di</strong> Chimica Biologica dell’Università <strong>di</strong> Urb<strong>in</strong>o (per applicazioni a<br />

dall’equilibrio con sviluppo <strong>di</strong> meto<strong>di</strong> topologici per analizzarne la <strong>di</strong>namica qualitativa<br />

(nell’ambito <strong>di</strong> una collaborazione, con scambio <strong>di</strong> giovani ricercatori, con il gruppo <strong>di</strong> I.<br />

Prigog<strong>in</strong>e e G. Nicolis <strong>in</strong> Bruxelles), con lo sviluppo dell’orig<strong>in</strong>ale approccio talvolta<br />

chiamato teorema <strong>di</strong> “Beretta e <strong>Vetrano</strong>” sulla D-simmetrizzabilità per sistemi complessi<br />

rappresentabili come grafi albero nella teoria topologica dei grafi <strong>in</strong> no<strong>di</strong>;<br />

• 1988-1990: Progetto e realizzazione <strong>di</strong> un apparato per l’esposizione controllata <strong>di</strong> campioni<br />

cellulari a campi elettromagnetici ELF (Extreme Low Frequency); è stato il primo apparato<br />

<strong>in</strong> Italia con controllo completo <strong>di</strong> tutti i parametri con prestazioni ad alto livello; la ricerca è<br />

stata condotta <strong>in</strong> collaborazione con <strong>di</strong>versi Istituti delle Università <strong>di</strong> Urb<strong>in</strong>o ed Ancona, e<br />

con Istituti collegati al M<strong>in</strong>istero della Salute. L’apparato funziona tutt’oggi a livello<br />

competitivo <strong>in</strong> ambito <strong>in</strong>ternazionale;<br />

• 1990-1991: Sviluppo <strong>di</strong> un Software multiscopo per persone colpite da han<strong>di</strong>cap psichico<br />

me<strong>di</strong>o lieve, <strong>in</strong> collaborazione con l’Università <strong>di</strong> Liegi (B), al f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>di</strong> aumentare, tramite<br />

opportuni sta<strong>di</strong> <strong>di</strong> esercitazione ed appren<strong>di</strong>mento, le possibilità <strong>di</strong> <strong>in</strong>serimento nelle normali<br />

attività della vita;<br />

• 1988-1997: Partecipazione alla realizzazione <strong>di</strong> LVD (Large Volume Detector),<br />

l’osservatorio sotterraneo per neutr<strong>in</strong>i nei Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, <strong>in</strong> particolare<br />

per la realizzazione <strong>di</strong> schede elettroniche (triggers locali e generali); questa attività si è<br />

sviluppata nell’ambito <strong>di</strong> una ampia collaborazione <strong>in</strong>ternazionale; <strong>in</strong> parallelo con questa<br />

attività, un approccio dettagliato alla fenomenologia delle oscillazioni <strong>di</strong> neutr<strong>in</strong>o (<strong>in</strong><br />

particolare con riferimento al problema del deficit dei neutr<strong>in</strong>i solari) è stato portato avanti<br />

nell’ipotesi <strong>di</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>di</strong>pendenza energetica del flusso me<strong>di</strong>o <strong>di</strong> neutr<strong>in</strong>i: <strong>Flavio</strong> <strong>Vetrano</strong> è


coautore <strong>di</strong> uno dei primi modelli consistenti <strong>di</strong> analisi a tre sapori delle oscillazioni<br />

neutr<strong>in</strong>iche senza il term<strong>in</strong>e <strong>di</strong> violazione <strong>di</strong> CP nella matrice <strong>di</strong> mix<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

• 1997-…: Partecipazione all’esperimento Italo-Francese Virgo, l’antenna gravitazionale<br />

<strong>in</strong>terferometrica (con bracci <strong>di</strong> 3 km) costruita <strong>in</strong> Casc<strong>in</strong>a, vic<strong>in</strong>o a Pisa; e cont<strong>in</strong>uativamente<br />

membro del Virgo Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee s<strong>in</strong>o al 2008; <strong>in</strong>izialmente con la responsabilità del<br />

gruppo <strong>in</strong>caricato <strong>di</strong> realizzare il filtraggio attivo del rumore sismico: <strong>in</strong> quest’ambito ha<br />

completato il progetto e realizzato tutti i sensori <strong>di</strong> posizione e <strong>di</strong> accelerazione per tutte le<br />

torri dell’antenna;<br />

• 1999: Direttore della “International Summer School on Experimental Physics of<br />

Gravitational Waves” presso l’Università <strong>di</strong> Urb<strong>in</strong>o;<br />

• 2000-2001: Collaborazione con Caltech (Pasadena, USA) e col gruppo <strong>di</strong> TAMA<br />

(Giappone) per lo sviluppo e la calibrazione <strong>di</strong> sensori <strong>di</strong> posizione ad altissima sensibilità<br />

(LVDT);<br />

• 1999-2008.: Responsabile italiano per le attività <strong>di</strong> Ricerca e Sviluppo <strong>di</strong> Virgo e, l’anno<br />

successivo, per tutto l’esperimento Virgo; <strong>in</strong> questo ruolo ha promosso ed ha partecipato al<br />

progetto “Crystal” per la realizzazione <strong>di</strong> fibre monocristall<strong>in</strong>e per la sospensione delle<br />

masse <strong>di</strong> test negli <strong>in</strong>terferometri gravitazionali, caratterizzandone le prestazioni dal punto <strong>di</strong><br />

vista dei processi <strong>di</strong>ssipativi; ha <strong>in</strong>oltre promosso ed ha partecipato all’esperimento LFF<br />

(Low Frequency Facility) per determ<strong>in</strong>are il limite del rumore termico negli specchi sospesi<br />

<strong>in</strong> ambiente simile a quello dell’antenna Virgo;<br />

• 2004: proponente <strong>di</strong> un nuovo detector per onde gravitazionali basato sulla <strong>in</strong>terferometria<br />

atomica; sviluppo del <strong>di</strong>segno prelim<strong>in</strong>are e della analisi della possibile sensibilità; per<br />

questa proposta l’Unione Europea ha assegnato una borsa biennale Marie Curie nell’ambito<br />

del Sesto Programma Quadro per richiamare <strong>in</strong> Italia un giovane ricercatore italiano a suo<br />

tempo trasferito a Caltech (USA);<br />

• 2005-2008 : membro dello staff scientifico del progetto europeo ILIAS-STReGA, f<strong>in</strong>anziato<br />

nell’ambito del Sesto Programma Quadro europeo e f<strong>in</strong>alizzato alla riduzione del rumore<br />

termico <strong>in</strong> sospensioni <strong>di</strong> masse <strong>di</strong> test;<br />

• 2006-…: Membro del “Core Team” <strong>di</strong> ACES (Atomic Clocks Ensemble <strong>in</strong> Space), la<br />

missione ESA <strong>di</strong> fisica fondamentale basata sull’utilizzo <strong>di</strong> orologi atomi ad alta stabilità e<br />

accuratezza nell’ ambiente <strong>di</strong> microgravità della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale (ISS);<br />

• 2007-2010: Project Leader del progetto “CoaCh” per lo sviluppo <strong>di</strong> nuovi materiali a<br />

bassissima per<strong>di</strong>ta per il coat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>di</strong> specchi per antenne gravitazionali; progetto <strong>in</strong><br />

collaborazione con LIGO (USA) e GEO (D e UK);<br />

• 2008-2010:Coor<strong>di</strong>natore Nazionale del progetto sulla riduzione del rumore termico <strong>in</strong> Virgo,<br />

f<strong>in</strong>anziato dal MIUR sotto contratto PRIN;<br />

• 2008-2011: Membro dello Science Team <strong>di</strong> ET-E<strong>in</strong>ste<strong>in</strong> Telescope, progetto europeo<br />

re<strong>di</strong>gere la roadmap per il prossimo trentennio nel campo della rivelazione delle Onde<br />

• 2009-…: Membro della collaborazione RISC (con l’Accademia Russa delle Scienze e la<br />

Lomonosov State University <strong>di</strong> Mosca) per preparare <strong>in</strong> Russia una antenna gravitazionale<br />

<strong>di</strong> seconda generazione;<br />

• 2009-2011: Membro del Program Advisory Committee (LIGO-PAC) come consulente per i<br />

progetti “Advanced LIGO and beyond” nel campo delle onde gravitazionali (sotto l'egida<br />

della National Science Fundation - NSF, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton USA).<br />

Altre attività m<strong>in</strong>ori <strong>in</strong> passato:<br />

• Collaborazione nel progetto e realizzazione <strong>di</strong> una stazione sismica nella regione<br />

Marche per il monitoraggio cont<strong>in</strong>uo <strong>di</strong> terremoti <strong>di</strong> magnitudo significativa; questa<br />

stazione è stata <strong>in</strong>serita nella rete nazionale <strong>di</strong> sorveglianza sismica dell’INGV;


• Collaborazione nel progetto e realizzazione <strong>di</strong> un respiratore automatico a<br />

ventilazione forzata per sale <strong>di</strong> rianimazione ospedaliere;<br />

• Autore del primo Data Base <strong>di</strong> dati ambientali scientifici per la regione Marche,<br />

commissionato dall’ENEL-Italia;<br />

• Autore del master plan per la LAN (Local Area Network), estesa poi alla MAN<br />

(Metropolitan Area Network) per l’Università <strong>di</strong> Urb<strong>in</strong>o con collegamento veloce <strong>in</strong><br />

geografico (rete GARR); il progetto è stato <strong>in</strong>teramente f<strong>in</strong>anziato dal MIUR tramite<br />

fon<strong>di</strong> per “Gran<strong>di</strong> Attrezzature";<br />

• Realizzazione <strong>di</strong> un Museo della Strumentazione Scientifica <strong>di</strong> <strong>in</strong>teresse storico<br />

collaboration of many European countries (about two hundreds scientists) for a<br />

design study on third generation GW antennae <strong>in</strong> the framework of FP7<br />

• 2008-….: appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a senior scientist <strong>in</strong> the “Gravitational Wave Roadmap<br />

representatives of the countries <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> GW experiments) <strong>in</strong> order to develop<br />

• Collaborat<strong>in</strong>g to design and realization of a seismic station <strong>in</strong> Marche region for<br />

monitor<strong>in</strong>g all the earthquakes of significant magnitude; this station has been<br />

<strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong> the national surveillance network of the Italian INGV;<br />

• Collaborat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> design and realization of a health device for automatic<br />

ventilation for lung <strong>di</strong>seases <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive health care unities;<br />

• Author of the first “Data Base of Environmental Data” for Marche Region,<br />

committed by the ENEL (Ente Nazionale Energia Elettrica-Italia);<br />
