all’attenzione del mondo.
Sarà accolto ogni suggerimento utile a migliorare
Egli escogita e ricrea
prospettive e armonie, divenendone artefice.
Barbera & Foderà ci sollecitano e ci aiutano a guardarci intorno e, soprattutto, dentro.
The eye-painter in the work of an architect and an engineer
“It’s the eye-painter that reveals /the branch and the radius / the man in silence / the bun / and the fish. / This eye is a laser
/ cutting out the world…” So writes Moncef Ghachem, one of the greatest Tunisian living poets in The Eye, a lyric included in
the collection Nouba (the Italian version has come out, edited by us, for the Institute Euro Arabic for Advanced Studies in Mazara
del Vallo, in 2004). These lines could be the best viaticum for the two artists: Carlo Foderà and Pietro Barbera, “The
Photographer”and The Painter, just to simplify who are going to exhibit their common work (their individual contributions come
together, we think, contemporary) in the Medina of Tunis, at the prestigious headquarters of the Foundation “Orestiadi di
Gibellina”, in the historic Mansion “Dar Bach Hamba”.
Foderà’s subjects of his flashes are often clearly designed in his look, the uniqueness of his sensitivity as an observer and just
there they change into Art before the magical click starts.
He devised and recreates perspectives and harmonies to become creator.
Even Barbera’s poetic comments show the prevalence of what is seen.
The word pulsates, as well as the image reflecting the watchful presence of the two artists
Nudity, a brief poem of the “Sylloge” is perhaps emblematic of their intent: “Nudity / No difference in the world of naked
Manhood showing truth above all, but the colors of Soul still exist makin’ one different from the other”
Beyond any difference (and, sometimes, discrimination) visible and outward to characterize and make each man recognizable
simply removing the dress Barbera and Foderà entrust their destiny as human beings, exactly the ones they want to participate
and share. These “poems” pre-exist their authors, but they become “visible” because of their particular perspective:point
of view . They are”isolated” from the reality of what could be the eyes and feelings in general
Looks trained, refined, used to draw architectural ideals and put inside reality and, backward, able to recognize shapes and
patterns in apparent randomness and the real disorder in’ the world.
An Architect, the other one an Engineer, Foderà and Barbera are accustomed to search for perfect spelling of things and
nature, including that of mankind.
An example of effective cooperation between the two: notice the depiction with the flamingos and the city backdrop where the
horizons of parallelism are of the two agglomerations, the houses and one of the birds in perfect harmony.
And please read the glue of the poetic reflection, Pink.
“Men’s homes turn pink when Flamingos come to rest on waters far from the city’s din.”
The eye-painter is able to change the fields into pattern, with the grain emerges as intense as it was brushed into a painting.
It’s a photographic technique very close to certain painting, the one adopted by Foderà. His works converse, for example, with
the canvases of the Locogrande painter Stefano Gianquinto (master of the desolate, fruitful, sometimes bleak and parched landscape
of the hinterland of Trapani), but also with famous names of Land Art Barbera & Foderà invite us, help us to look around,
and especially inside. To recognize what we are beside and in front of an association fact, with caresses and tenderness. See the
very impressive works Fog and Alone.
In the first, the stone paved of an Erice road sparks and flows like a stream or a slow lava flow.
In the second, intersecting parapets, streetlight, Tower, seat and solitude “of men unaware of their fate.” In Tunisia of Mario
Scales (enemy of exoticism) and Abul Qasim Ash-Shabba, brother of Eagles, of the hurricane and of the mountains, Pietro
Barbera and Carlo Foderà seem to have “ their papers” in order.
Il divino
Se vuoi capire l’attaccamento
alla propria terra
stai attento
a come i contadini curano gli alberi,
come rivoltano le zolle,
ai filari di vite,
disposti in un ordine
che solo il divino
sa emulare.
What’s God-like?
If you like to understand
the love of your Mother Land
pay attention
to peasants’ affection for trees:
how they turn up the soil
to the rows of vines
and how they are arranged…
only GOD can do it.
Le divin
Si tu veux comprendre l’attachement
à ta propre terre
observe attentivement de quelle façon
les paysans soignent les arbres,
comment ils remuent la terre
autour des vignes
disposées comme seul le divin
sait égaler.
