conversione dei
Longobardi al
cattolicesimo, avvenuta nel
VII secolo per impulso
della regina Teodolinda, ad
accelerare il processo di
fusione tra i due elementi.
Ma la nuova integrazione,
favorita anche dalla
progressiva penetrazione
dei latini
nell’amministrazione del
regno, non modificava la
struttura sociale originaria,
fondata sulla divisione
della società in gruppi
familiari. Al vertice di
questi clan - detti fare -
stavano i duchi,
che possedevano
terre ed
esercitavano
l’autorità militare
e civile sul
territorio. Il
controllo del re
era garantito da
una rete di
gastaldi, alti
funzionari che
amministravano
