Integrare l’Italia per integrarla in europa
Negli anni a venire il 2011 verrà ricordato come un anno molto difficile per il nostro Paese: un
frangente in cui certezze maturate e consolidate per più di sessant’anni si sono sciolte come la neve
al primo sole primaverile. Grazie al cielo, il cricket italiano è stato toccato solo marginalmente da
questa difficile congiuntura. Ne consegue che l’anno scorso, come la grande maggioranza di quelli che
l’hanno preceduto, è stato un altro momento di feconda crescita per il nostro movimento.
Sarebbe da stolti sperare che questa congiuntura positiva in uno scenario negativo possa mantenersi
come d’incanto. Quanto sta accadendo in Italia in questi mesi, a cominciare, limitandoci all’ambito
sportivo, dalla dolorosa rinuncia alle candidatura olimpica di Roma 2020, non è un rapido fenomeno
transitorio che si esaurirà nell’arco di un paio d’anni. Si tratta, bensì, di un necessario, seppur tardivo,
adeguamento che consenta all’Italia di non perdere il treno dell’unità europea in termini effettivi, cosa
ben diversa dalla adesione formale al Trattato di Maastricht vent’anni fa.
Per uno strano gioco del destino, 48 ore prima di questo storico trattato, veniva approvata in Italia
l’attuale legge sulla cittadinanza, una norma che regolamenta un argomento molto sentito in ambito
federale. Infatti, la grande maggioranza dei nostri tesserati sono italiani di fatto che contribuiscono
con lavoro e fatica al benessere di questo Paese pur non potendo fregiarsi della cittadinanza a causa di
questa legge, oramai superata, che certo non pone il nostro Paese all’avanguardia in Europa.
Sarebbe molto bello poter celebrare tra dodici mesi su queste pagine una svolta positiva e consapevole
in tal senso dell’Italia sulla strada della civiltà e dell’integrazione propria di
ogni grande nazione.

Speaking about Italy, it is likely future historians will mark 2011 as a turning point – as the very difficult
year in which certainties accumulated over six decades melted down like snow under the early spring
sun. But notwithstanding the stifling general bleakness, Italian cricket has remained substantially
unscathed. For 2011, just as the preceding years, was a period in which the game has developed and
even prospered.
It would, however, be downright reckless to consider this positive trend, set against a negative scenario,
as continuing forever like in a magic spell. What is happening in Italy at this time – starting from the
painful decision to pull out from the 2020 Rome Olympic race – is not something transitory that is
bound to pass away in a few years. It is, on the contrary, about having to finally align ourselves to the
rest of Europe: making sure not to lose the train of European Unity; clarifying that Italy’s adhesion to
the Maastricht Treaty, twenty years ago, wasn’t just a scribble at the bottom of a document.
By a fateful twist of fate, just 48 hours prior to the signing of that historic treaty, Italy approved a
new citizenship law that, still in force today, would have far-reaching consequences to our cricket
movement. In fact, the majority of the players registered in the Federazione are de facto Italians who,
through their work, contribute towards the country’s wealth without being able to enjoy the benefits
of citizenship due to this outdated law that doesn’t exactly make our country a frontrunner in Europe.
It would be wonderful if, in 12 months’ time, we could celebrate on these very pages a positive legal
change on this issue that would finally pave in Italy the road to true progress and integration, the
constituent traits of great nations.

una gradita sorpresa
Non si aveva idea del valore degli Azzurri nel T20, la più recente
formula del gioco, e l’esordio con la Croazia sembrava confermare
i peggiori timori con l’Italia 73/9 all’inseguimento del modesto
totale avversario di 89. Ci pensavano Damian Crowley e Din Alaud
a raddrizzare la baracca con un connubio conclusivo vincente.
Seguivano nette vittorie con Austria e Gibilterra, una sconfitta
preventivabile con l’anfitrione Guernsey e un roboante successo
sulla Norvegia che consegnava il primo posto nel girone per miglior
media punti grazie anche all’inattesa vittoria austriaca su Guernsey.
La semifinale contro gli altri padroni di casa, Jersey, decisiva per il
passaggio alla qualificazione globale, vedeva l’Italia, in battuta per
prima realizzare 133 punti grazie a 55 di Crowley. Jersey partiva al
galoppo, 13 punti dal primo over, e solo gradualmente gli Azzurri
riuscivano a rientrare in partita. La svolta arrivava al 16° over
con il punteggio 97/3. Capitan Bonora dava la palla a Crowley. Il
ventiduenne riminese del Capo di Buona Speranza lanciava l’over
della vita eliminando Carlyon e Gough, il cui connubio di 41 stava
segnando la partita a favore di Jersey. Ci pensava, poi, Munasinghe
con altri due wickets negli over conclusivi a mettere in cassaforte il
visto per Dubai. Del tutto platonica la sconfitta con la Danimarca
nella finale del torneo.

Rafforzata dagli innesti di Michael Di Venuto, Gareth Berg e Carl Sandri e con il recupero di Vincenzo
Penazza, l’Italia affrontava a Dubai il torneo a 16 squadre che avrebbe poi promosso le prime due
classificate, Afghanistan ed Irlanda, ai mondiali autunnali in Sri Lanka. La partenza azzurra non avrebbe
potuto essere migliore con l’Oman liquidato facilmente grazie ai lanci di Sandri ed agli innings di Di
Venuto e Petricola. Seguiva una sofferta vittoria contro gli USA in cui Sandri in battutta e Pennazza al
lancio facevano da corollario ad una grande prova complessiva di Crowley, 25 in battuta seguito da 3/20
al lancio. Sulle ali dell’entusiasmo gli Azzurri sfioravano il colpaccio contro la favoritissima Irlanda che
prevaleva di solo due wicket a due lanci dalla fine. La partita con il Kenya segnava un passo indietro con
una sonora sconfitta. Il giorno di riposo ritemprava i giocatori e contro l’Uganda si rivedeva la migliore
Italia. Lenta a carburare, 27/3 dopo 9 over, la squadra veniva trasformata da un esplosivo 44 di Crowley
che permetteva di raggiungere quota 131. Al lancio era la volta di Berg con 4/20 a fornire la prova
decisiva in una vittoria di 13 punti. Si arrivava così al penultimo incontro alla pari con la Scozia a giocarsi
l’accesso alla Final Six. Un discreto innings in battuta, che realizzava 136 punti grazie al contributo di
tutti, non veniva seguito da una prova equivalente al lancio e gli scozzesi superavano il traguardo a
due over dal termine per la perdita di solo tre battitori. La squadra oggettivamente andava in calando
negli ultimi tre incontri perdendo, sempre in battuta per seconda, con Namibia, Papua Nuova Guinea
e nuovamente Kenya, e chiudendo il torneo con un insperato decimo posto che issava l’Italia in 20°
posizione nel ranking mondiale T20.

a welcome surprise
Just how good Italy was in T20, cricket’s latest format, was anyone’s guess. The
debut match against Croatia, with Italy haplessly floundering at 73/9 chasing a
modest 89, seemed to confirm the forecasts of the doom mongers. But at the
end it was Damian Crowley and Din Alaud who set things right in a dramatic
do-or-die last-wicket partnership. This match was followed by clear-cut wins
against Austria and Gibraltar, a predictable defeat against co-hosts Guernsey
and a massive win over Norway, which gave Italy the top-spot in the pool thanks
to a better net run rate following Austria’s shock victory over Guernsey.
The stage was thus set for the decisive semi-final versus the other co-hosts, Jersey,
with the winners going to the World Cup Qualifier. Batting first, Italy reached
133 thanks to a solid 55 by Crowley. Though Jersey’s response started strongly,
flashing 13 in the first over, Italy slowly got back into the match. The turning point
in the 16th over: with Jersey’s score at 97/3, skipper Bonora handed the ball to
Crowley. The twenty-two-year-old Rimini boy from the Cape bowled the over of
his life dismissing Carlyon and Gough, whose 41-run partnership was tilting the
match in favour of the hosts. Following this, Jersey’s run chase was terminated
by Munasinghe who,

Cup in Sri Lanka next autumn.

Italy’s start was as good as it could get with an easy win over Oman thanks to some excellent bowling by Sandri and good
batting by Di Venuto and Petricola. This was followed by a close win over USA in which Sandri’s batting and Pennazza’s
bowling well supported an outstanding all-round performance by Crowley, 25 with the bat followed by 3 for 20 with the ball.
Full of confidence, Italy came close to upsetting super favourites Ireland, losing by two wickets with two balls to spare. The
following match, though, was a setback as Italy was soundly defeated by Kenya. The rest day did the trick with the Azzurri
back to winning mode against Uganda. Having grafted to a laborious 27/3 in 9 overs, Italy was rescued by a swashbuckling
44 by Crowley that lifted the score to 131. Then it was Berg’s turn with some masterful bowling (4/20) to snatch a 13-run
victory. At that point the attention of the cricketing world was turned to the match between Italy and ODI side Scotland
for a place in the Final Six. After having batted decently with decorous knocks from the top-order to reach 136, Italy did
not follow suit with the ball, allowing the Scottish to achieve the run chase with 12 balls to spare and the loss of only three
wickets. Although the team ran out of steam in the last three encounters, losing against Namibia, Papua New Guinea and,
once more, Kenya – all three times batting second – Italy unexpectedly finished 10th in the tournament, rising to a dizzying
20th place in the T20 world rankings.

Reduce dalla storica vittoria agli Europei Under 15 del 2009
e dalla piazza d’onore della Under 17 all’Isola di Man dodici
mesi dopo, la Nazionale Under 19 2011 è tornata nel
paradiso fiscale del Mar d’Irlanda per confermare i buoni
risultati dell’ultimo triennio. Gli azzurrini si sono classificati al
quarto posto tra le dieci partecipanti al termine del torneo
non senza un pizzico di buona sorte. Battuta nell’esordio
la Germania, in una partita dominata da un sontuoso 156
di Roshendra Abeywickrama, il punteggio più alto mai
realizzato da un battitore azzurro in una partita ufficiale,
l’Italia riusciva in modo miracoloso a sconfiggere prima la
Spagna, difendendo solo 89 punti con gli spagnoli che a
49/3 sembravano aver la vittoria in pugno, e poi Gibilterra,
trovandosi 32/6 all’inseguimento di un misero 79. Il successivo pareggio con i padroni di casa in una partita non giocata a causa
della pioggia relegava gli azzurri al secondo posto nel girone causa il peggior Net Run Rate rispetto agli isolani. Nella finale
per il 3° - 4° posto l’Italia cedeva di misura alla Francia al termine di una partita che, nonostante un innings un po’ svogliato
di 167 punti, i ragazzi sembravano poter agevolmente chiudere
a loro favore dopo aver ridotto la Francia a 29/5. Così non era ed
ICC European Championship U19 Division 2 (Isle of man) oggettivamente la sconfitta suonava come una giusta lezione per
un gruppo pieno di talento ma anche di presunzione.

Following the historic win in the European Under 15
championship in 2009 and the Under 17’s second place in
the Isle of Man 12 months later, Italy Under 19 returned to
the tax heaven in the Irish Sea to confirm the outstanding
results obtained over the past three years.
The “azzurrini” came fourth out of ten relying rather
heavily on their good luck. Having beaten Germany in the opening match dominated by an imperious 156 by Roshendra
Abeywickrama – the highest ever score by an Italian batsmen in an official outing – Italy in the next match miraculously
defended a paltry 89 against Spain, which were at one stage coasting to victory at 49/3. Next came Gibraltar: the Rock
Dwellers made a miserly 79, but Italy made heavy weather of it and were 32/6 before squeaking home. Then the following
game against the home team was washed out and Italy was pushed back to second place behind the islanders due to a
worst net run rate.
In the third – fourth place final, France narrowly beat Italy at the end of a match where despite a lacklustre innings that
produced 167 runs, Italy looked to be safely home after having reduced les Bleus to 29/5. But it was not to be and the loss,
all said and done, was a good cure for a group of very talented but also overconfident young players.

Vincendo il tricolore 2011 il Trentino ha posto fine a cinque anni di dominio del Tecnessenze Pianoro il cui
record di 14 scudetti in 19 campionati resta, tuttavia, inavvicinabile. I ragazzi del Professor Parisi, ad onor
del vero, avevano dominato la fase regolare del torneo con cinque vittorie e due pareggi, causati dalla
pioggia, su otto incontri. L’unica sconfitta, avvenuta a finale già conquistata, era però arrivata proprio
contro il Trentino, un segnale foriero di quanto sarebbe poi accaduto nel play – off scudetto. Bologna
e Kingsgrove hanno brevemente aspirato alla finale ma, diversamente dal Trentino, hanno nettamente
ceduto negli scontri diretti con il Pianoro. Il Capannelle ha dedicato la stagione al ringiovanimento della
squadra, crescendo strada facendo e trovando l’unica vittoria all’ultima giornata. Con il vantaggio del
fattore campo per l’eventuale bella, il Tecnessenze partiva in finale con i favori del pronostico. L’eliminazione
del Trentino per 139 sembrava indirizzare Gara 1 verso i padroni di casa che, del tutto inaspettatamente,
crollavano da 74/4 a 127 all out contro i
precisi lanci di Anwar Attieq. Il punteggio
di 127 evidentemente non portava bene
al Pianoro perché era lì che di nuovo si
fermava in Gara 2 all’inseguimento del 192
del Trentino, rispondendo con un innings
privo di carattere alla volitiva, ma non del
tutto convincente, prova in battuta dei
padroni di casa. A sorpresa, quindi, seppur
con pieno merito, lo scudetto arrivava per la
prima volta nella provincia autonoma.

By winning the 2011 pennant, Trentino ended a five-year winning streak by Tecnessenze Pianoro, whose
record of 14 titles in 19 championships looks, nevertheless, unassailable.
Professor Parisi’s boys had actually dominated the regular season with five wins and two rained-out draws
in eight matches. The only loss, with the final already in the bag, was against Trentino itself, an omen of
things to come in the playoffs. Bologna and Kingsgrove also had a shot at the final but unlike Trentino were
comprehensively beaten in the head-to-head clashes with Pianoro. Capannelle, on the other hand, focused on
rejuvenating the team, which improved as the season progressed, finally achieving its only victory in the last
round of matches. Having home advantage for the decider should the need arise, Tecnessenze was favourite
in the best of three championship playoff. After
bowling out Trentino for a paltry 139, Game 1 was
definitely drifting in the home team’s way, when,
having reached 74/4, Pianoro collapsed to 127
all out, demolished by a deadly spell of precision
bowling by Anwar Attieq. At the end, 127 turned
out to be unlucky for Pianoro because that was once
again the score they made in Game 2 providing a
gutless display chasing Trentino’s determined but
not entirely convincing 192. A surprising outcome,
no doubt, but at the end fully deserved, with the
title landing for the first time in the autonomous
province of Trento.

Il buono, il brutto ed il cattivo
Quello 2011 è stato un campionato cadetto avvincente con il Latina Lanka che si è ripreso il titolo lasciato vacante
l’anno prima, in cui si era autoretrocesso in Serie C, precedendo in volata, al termine di una entusiasmante corsa a
tre, il Lions Brescia, campione uscente, e la Veneta Sanitaria Venezia, decisamente cresciuta nel corso della stagione.
I bresciani partivano a spron battuto sconfiggendo i pontini nell’incontro di apertura. Quattro vittorie consecutive
lanciavano i concittadini di Tito Speri in una fuga solitaria che veniva interrotta dall’inattesa sconfitta casalinga con
il Genoa e dalla ben più prevedibile
battuta d’arresto nell’incontro di
ritorno a Latina. Nel duello previsto
s’inseriva gradualmente il Venezia
che, recuperando dal doppio ko
subito da lombardi e laziali in
apertura di torneo, inanellava una
striscia vincente prima dei due
scontri diretti nel girone di ritorno.
Interveniva, a questo punto, Giove
Pluvio che interrompeva l’incontro
tra i lagunari ed il Latina dopo che i
veneti avevano totalizzato 240 punti.
Questo risultato sembrava spianare
la strada al Lions che, però, cadeva
inopinatamente a Campalto contro il
Venezia, non riuscendo a difendere il
ragguardevole score di 255. Il Latina,
vittorioso contemporaneamente sul
Genoa, passava al comando per una
manciata di punti, riuscendo nelle
ultime due giornate a mantenere la
mezza incollatura di vantaggio su
Brescia e Venezia.
the good, the ugly and the Bad
The 2011 Serie B was a truly exciting one with Latina Lanka regaining the title it had not defended the previous
year when it relegated itself to Serie C. The Pontines won an enthralling head-to-head race involving Lions Brescia,
the title holders, and Veneta Sanitaria Venezia, which grew from strength to strength as the season progressed.
Lions Brescia started at full gallop beating Latina in the curtain raiser, the first of four consecutive wins that saw the
fellow citizens of Italian patriot Tito Speri take an initial lead. Their solitary run, though, was unexpectedly stopped
at home by Genoa and, more predictably, by the Pontines in the return match in Latina.
The duel between the two favourites soon turned into a three-way race with Venezia joining in, following initial
losses to both Brescia and Latina with a string of consecutive victories. The stage was then set for the head-to-head
clashes on the return leg. However, in the first of these the heavens opened to bring the match with Latina to a
premature end after Venezia had set a target of 240.
This result seemed to have all but paved the way for Brescia that, against all odds, fell at Campalto against
Venezia, failing to defend a sizeable score of 255. At the same time, Latina won against Genoa and took the
lead, successfully defending the handful of points that separated them from Brescia and Venezia over the last two
rounds of matches.

Il Campionato di Serie C 2012 registrava al via 12 squadre divise in due gironi da sei con le prime due qualificate
per la Final Four di metà luglio in programma sullo splendido campo del Centro Sportivo Ca’Nova di Medicina.
Il Girone Nord perdeva la Cecchinese Pasiano ancor prima dell’inizio, la squadra friulana esclusa per non aver
sottoposto i propri giocatori alle visite per l’idoneità agonistica. Le due compagini scaligere, l’Azzura di Villafranca
Veronese ed il Verona, campione uscente, trovavano solo nel Milan una minima opposizione sulla strada della
qualificazione con Sud Tirol e Banglaguidizzolo relegate a fanalini di coda. Più avvincente il raggruppamento
centrale con Olgiata, Florence e l’esordiente Poggio San Marcello che si battevano fino alla fine per il passaggio del
turno. Erano i marchigiani a restare fuori dalle semifinali a causa di un temporale che li privava di una sicura vittoria
sul Rapallo, distaccandoli così in classifica dalle due
contendenti. L’Arezzo conquistava la quarta moneta
regolando nell’ordine San Michele Aprila e Rapallo.
Le semifinali producevano due risultati sorprendenti
con le piazzate dei gironi che sconfiggevano le
vincenti: il Florence superava l’Azzurra al termine di
un incontro avvincente mentre il Verona prevaleva
facilmente sull’Olgiata. Dopo che l’Azzurra regolava
l’Olgiata per il terzo posto, il Florence si prendeva una
sonora rivincita sul Verona, da cui era stato battuto in
semifinale nel 2010, conquistando con pieno merito il
titolo di categoria.
Florence in Paradise
The 2012 Serie C comprised of 12 teams split in two groups of six with the first two qualifying for the Final Four
in mid-July to be held at the splendid Ca’Nova ground in Medicina.
The North Group lost a team before a ball was bowled when Cecchinese Pasiano was not admitted after having
failed to submit its players to the mandatory health screening. The two Verona teams, Azzura of Villafranca
Veronese and Verona, the defending champion, found on the road to qualification some, albeit tenuous,
resistance from Milan, with Sud Tirol and Banglaguidizzolo contending the wooden spoon.
The Central Group was more exciting with Olgiata, Florence and newcomers Poggio San Marcello fighting it
out to the end. It was the team from Marche
that ultimately missed out when a storm
denied them a certain victory over Rapallo and
prevented them from closing the gap with
the two teams at the top. Arezzo was fourth,
followed by San Michele Aprilia and Rapallo,
which failed to win a match.
The semi-finals produced two surprising
results, with both runners-up beating the
group winners: Florence won against Azzurra
at the end of a tight match, while Verona easily
overcame Olgiata. After Azzurra beat Olgiata
in the final for third place, Florence got sweet
revenge by thrashing Verona, which had beat
them in the 2010 semi-final, to deservedly lift
the Serie C championship.

Il canto del cigno pontino
Tornata nella tradizionale collocazione settembrina, la Coppa Italia 2011 ha visto il terzo successo
consecutivo del Latina Lanka. La superiorità dei pontini, che hanno battuto nell’ordine San Michele,
Olgiata, Florence e Lions Brescia, è stata schiacciante a dispetto della formula T20 che, solitamente, tende
ad appiattire i valori. La Final Four svoltasi in uno splendido weekend di fine estate sul campo bolognese
del Navile ha registrato la presenza delle medesime quattro
semifinaliste dell’anno precedente con Florence, Lions
Brescia e Tecnessenze Pianoro a fare compagnia ai laziali.
Entusiasmante la prima semifinale in cui il Lions Brescia
rovesciava il risultato di dodici mesi prima sconfiggendo
il Pianoro 198 – 174 al termine di tre emozionanti ore di
gioco. Al contrario, la vittoria del Latina sul Florence
risultava poco più che una formalità. Dopo che i collinari
bolognesi avevano regolato di misura i toscani nella finale
di consolazione, prima dell’inizio della sfida decisiva,
il cricket italiano viveva un momento di profonda e
sincera commozione con la consegna a Max Da Costa del
Capannelle da parte della vedova, Prof.ssa Enrica Brunelli,
del Narendra Gaonkar Fairplay Award, il premio intitolato
a ricordo dell’indimenticabile padre fondatore del cricket
maremmano ed italiano. La finale si rivelava decisamente
deludente per “colpa” del fuoriclasse del Latina Lanka
Dinidu Marage il cui innings di 75 in 38 palle, condito da ben
sette 4 e sei 6, spianava la strada ad un monumentale 215,
punteggio al di fuori della portata dei lombardi, mai entrati
in partita. Il Latina Lanka chiudeva così la sua feconda
esperienza pontina visto il trasferimento societario nella
Capitale sotto la nuova denominazione Roma.

Back as Italian cricket’s September event, Coppa Italia 2011 was won by Latina Lanka for the third time
in a row. The superiority of the Pontines was overwhelming as they bulldozed past San Michele, Olgiata,
Florence and Lions Brescia, unaffected by the fact that T20 is a format that generally tends to level
strengths between teams. The Final Four held at Bologna’s Navile ground on a magnificent late summer
weekend involved the same four teams of the previous year with Florence, Lions Brescia and Tecnessenze
Pianoro hoping to wrest the cup from Latina Lanka. The first semi-final was outstanding as Lions Brescia
overturned the previous year’s result by beating Pianoro 198 to 174 at the end of three hours of great
cricket. In the other semi-final, Latina’s win was, as expected, a mere formality. In the interval between the
3rd place final, in which Pianoro scraped past Florence, and the decisive clash, Italian cricket celebrated
a truly sincere and heartfelt event with the handing of the Narendra Gaonkar Fairplay Award to Max Da
Costa of Capannelle by Prof. Enrica Brunelli, widow of Narendra Gaonkar. The prize is named after one
of the unforgettable founders of cricket in the Maremma region and in Italy.
The rather disappointing final can be “blamed” on Latina Lanka’s star Dinidu Marage whose innings of
75 in 38 balls with seven 4s and six 6s helped his side reach a monumental 215, which never even entered
in Brescia’s sights. With this latest victory, Latina Lanka closed its hugely successful experience in Latina,
and from next year will move to the capital changing its name to Roma.

La crescita dei tornei giovanili agonistici federali,
continuata nel 2011, è stata sancita con il
passaggio dai concentramenti su due giorni
a formule più articolate. Si cominciava con
l’Under 19, giocata con la formula del girone
unico nazionale, l’unica possibile con cinque
partecipanti. Ancona, Kingsgrove e Veneta
Sanitaria Venezia si sconfiggevano a vicenda negli
scontri diretti mentre Capannelle e Tecnessenze
Pianoro si trovavano subito escluse dalla lotta per
il titolo. I marchigiani ed il Venezia facevano l’en
plein con le due comprimarie mentre il Kingsgrove
veniva fermato dalla pioggia all’ippodromo
romano, perdendo poi anche a Rastignano. Alla
fine erano i veneti a prevalere, a pari punti in
classifica, grazie alla vittoria nello scontro diretto.Il torneo Under 15, con dodici squadre ai nastri di partenza, ricalcava
la stessa formula del 2010. Erano Kingsgrove, Venezia, Lions Brescia ed Olgiata a conquistarsi l’accesso alla Final
Four d’inizio ottobre al Navile nel quale i lagunari bissavano il titolo Under 19, sconfiggendo i milanesi nella prima
semifinale ed il Lions, vittorioso nella seconda sull’Olgiata, in finale. L’Under 17 registrava al via otto contendenti divise
in due gironi. Il Kingsgrove prevaleva al nord su Lions Brescia, Venezia, che vedeva così sfumare il sogno della tripletta,
e Verona mentre al centro il Bologna regolava facilmente Pianoro, Latina Lanka e Capannelle. La finale vedeva il netto
successo dei meneghini che così scucivano lo scudetto ai felsinei, vincitori nel 2010.
Venice spells youth
Youth tournaments continued to progress in 2011 to the extent that the Federazione was required to relinquish
the one weekend a year format and design an articulate competition one. The Under 19 boys played in a single
nation-wide championship, the only format possible with five teams participating. Ancona, Kingsgrove and Veneta
Sanitaria Venezia each beat the other in the head-to-head clashes while Capannelle and Tecnessenze Pianoro were
out of the title fight right from the outset. The team from Marche and Venezia got two-out-of-two against the two
stopgaps while Kingsgrove was stopped by rain at the Rome hippodrome and successively beaten at Rastignano. At
the end Venezia and Ancona finished on equal points in the table, the pennant going the former on the strength of
the head-to-head win. The Under 15 championship, with 12 teams, was held according to the same format of 2010.
Kingsgrove, Venezia, Lions Brescia and Olgiata gained access to the Final Four. Held at the Navile in October, Venezia
won, thus achieving the Under 15 and Under 19 double, defeating Kingsgrove in the first semi-final and Brescia,
which had beaten Olgiata in the second, in the final. The
Under 17 championship saw eight teams at the start,
split up in two groups. In the north, Kingsgrove got the
better of Lions Brescia, Verona and Venezia, which was
thus forced to give up its triple crown dreams. While in
the centre, Bologna eased past Pianoro, Latina Lanka and
Capannelle. The final was one-sided affair as Kingsgrove
wrested the pennant from Bologna, winners in 2010.

Il Campionato italiano maschile Under 13 era l’evento d’apertura della
stagione 2011. Giocato nella incantevole cornice del Parco archelogico
dell’Appia Antica al Punto Verde di Tor Carbone, il torneo vedeva la
meritata vittoria dell’Olgiata che così conquistava il primo titolo della sua
storia prevalendo con pieno merito sul Bologna in finale dopo che le due
contendenti avevano rispettivamente sconfitto in semifinale Capannelle
e Casteller. La compagine della Marca, a sua volta, si confermava per il
terzo anno consecutivo la più forte a livello giovanile femminile prevalendo
nettamente sul Pianoro.
Cambio della guardia ai vertici femminili seniores con il Kingsgrove che
strappava lo scudetto al Capannelle al termine di un avvincente partita giocata in uno splendido sabato d’ottobre al
Navile di Bologna. Il Casteller corroborava il titolo juniores prevalendo sul Pianoro per la terza moneta. Si chiudeva
così, dopo tre anni, la fase del femminile 8 – a – side. Da quest’anno il torneo si giocherà a ranghi completi su due
appuntamenti.
Playing it by ear
The Italian Under 13 Championship was the opening event of the 2011 cricket season. Played against the lovely
backdrop of the Appian Way archaeological park at the Punto Verde di Tor Carbone ground, the tournament went
Olgiata’s way, which thus lifted its first ever silverware, winning against Bologna in the title match after the finalists
had respectively beaten in the semifinals Capannelle and Casteller. The latter, though, proved to be unrivalled in the
girls youth tournament for the third consecutive year, easily winning against Pianoro.
The women’s championship saw a change at the top with Kingsgrove overcoming title holders Capannelle in an
exciting match played in glorious weather at the Bologna Navile ground in October. Casteller further boosted its
season by beating Pianoro to the bronze medal. This tournament was the last stage of the experimental eight-a-side
format, because starting from this season, women will play regular 11-a-side cricket in a championship featuring
two events instead of one.

Dopo otto anni d’assenza, l’ultima edizione nel 2004 essendo stata vinta dal Trentino, tornava nel
calendario federale il Campionato italiano Indoor, giocato con la formula six – a - side. Nell’impeccabile
cornice del Palasavena di San Lazzaro di Savena 12 compagini si sono date battaglia per il primo titolo della
stagione 2012. Divise in quattro gironi da tre, le squadre hanno dapprima dato vita ai gironi preliminari,
conclusisi con la qualificazione per le semifinali di Kingsgrove, Lions Brescia, Roma e Trentino. Escluso
Trentino – Genoa, gli incontri della fase preliminare erano risultati squilibrati, le tre partite conclusive
del torneo, al contrario, hanno pienamente soddisfatto il palato dei buongustai presenti in tribuna.
Nella prima semifinale tutta lombarda, il Lions Brescia
prevaleva solo alla penultima palla sul Kingsgrove che
aveva difeso con le unghie e con i denti un totale di 46
che pareva facile da superare. Ancor più drammatica la
seconda sfida tra Roma e Trentino, chiusasi in parità e
vinta dai capitolini per minor numero di wickets persi.
Prima finale del 2012, dunque, nel segno del 2011 visto
che Roma altro non è che la nuova denominazione del
fortissimo Latina Lanka. Il cambio di nome, tuttavia, non
deve essere dispiaciuto al Lions Brescia che, ripetendo
l’exploit della semifinale, vinceva nuovamente in
rimonta al penultimo lancio prendendosi così una piccola
rivincita per la doppia sconfitta in Serie B e Coppa Italia
subita dagli ex pontini nella precedente stagione.

After an absence of eight years – the last time was in 2004
with Trentino bagging the title – the six-a-side indoor
championship was back in the Federazione’s official
events’ calendar. Played in the impeccable Palasavena
indoor facility at San Lazzaro di Savena, the tournament
contested by 12 clubs assigned the first title of the 2012
season. Divided in four groups of three, the preliminary
phase finished with Kingsgrove, Lions Brescia, Roma and
Trentino qualifying for the semis.
If, with the exception of Trentino – Genoa, the
preliminary phase games were one-sided, the conclusive
three matches met the expectations of the cricketing
connoisseurs on the stands. In the first semi-final, a Lombardia derby, Lions Brescia snatched victory off
the penultimate ball beating Kingsgrove which had defended, tooth and nail, an apparently easy target
of 46. The other semi-final was even more dramatic with Trentino and Roma finishing level but with the
latter winning by virtue of having lost fewer wickets.
The first final of 2012 thus turned out to be a repeat of 2011, considering that Roma is none other than
ever conquering Latina Lanka under a new name. Lions Brescia, however, seemed not to mind the name
change at all, repeating their semi-final exploit by winning again off the penultimate ball. It was a sweet
victory for the Lions giving them a small revenge following the double defeat, Serie B and Coppa Italia,
at the hands of the former Pontines in the previous season.

damian Crowley
La storia di Fida Hussain sintetizza tante situazioni esistenti oggi in Italia. Nato
24 anni fa a Jhelum in Pakistan, Fida è giunto a Brescia nel 2002 con la madre
e le sue sorelle, ricongiungendosi al padre arrivato sei anni prima. Diplomatosi
elettricista, Fida è subito entrato nel mondo del lavoro non dimenticando mai
la grande passione della sua vita: il cricket. Sorte ha voluto che incontrasse
nel maggio 2006 Simone Gambino, di passaggio a Brescia. Il presidente
federale, intuendo l’immensa voglia di cricket di Fida, lo ha indirizzato verso
l’attività agonistica. Da lì, per Fida ci sono state tante soddisfazioni, frutto
di un impegno serio e costante. Nazionale Under 19 nel 2007, quando
giocava nella Azzurra Villafranca, è poi passato l’anno successivo al Trentino
risultando determinante negli ultimi due trionfi della compagine della provincia
autonoma. Da allenatore, ha costruito una ottima Under 19 nel 2010 e l’anno
scorso è stato il trascinatore sul campo della squadra nelle finali scudetto con il
Pianoro, risultando top scorer in ambedue le partite.
Nativo di Città del Capo, Damian Crowley, italiano per via della nonna
riminese Margherita Mancini, è stato l’indiscusso prim’attore degli ultimi
12 mesi azzurri nel segno del T20. Messosi in contatto con la Federazione
nel 2009 quando giocava in Inghilterra, Damian fu portato in prova con la
Sperimentale a Jersey segnando una centuria all’esordio. Nel 2010 in Italia
nelle fila del Pianoro, ha contribuito alla conquista dello scudetto, risultando,
altresì, fondamentale per la Nazionale nella vittoriosa WCL 4 bolognese con
innings pesanti contro Argentina e Tanzania. Ad Hong Kong nella successiva
WCL 3, il suo clinico 53 ha sigillato l’esordio vincente contro la Danimarca.
Nella formula T20 è rapidamente diventato l’autentico pilastro della squadra.
Mattatore incontrastato della qualificazione continentale, nella decisiva
semifinale contro Jersey ha assicurato con mazza e palla la qualificazione
azzurra a Dubai al torneo globale dove contro USA ed Uganda è stato
l’artefice di altre due splendide vittorie azzurre.
Born in Cape Town, Damian Crowley – Italian by way of his grandmother Margherita Mancini from Rimini – was the
undisputed star of Italy’s T20 campaigns over the past 12 months. After having contacted the Federazione in 2009 while
playing in England, Damian was selected for Italy A’s tour of Jersey, scoring a century on debut. He joined Pianoro in 2010,
contributing to the team’s successful championship defence, and proved to be as decisive in La Nazionale’s WCL 4 campaign
in Bologna, with crucial innings versus Argentina and Tanzania. In the successive WCL 3 tournament in Hong Kong, a
consummate innings of 53 helped Italy win on debut against Denmark. He has rapidly emerged as a key player for Italy in
T20. A match winner in the European T20 qualifier, he ensured Italy’s passage to the global qualifier in Dubai thanks to a fine
performance with bat and ball in the decisive semi-final against Jersey. In Dubai he was again the main man in the splendid
victories over USA and Uganda.
Fida hussain
The story of Fida Hussain epitomises the many similar ones occurring in Italy today. Born 24 years ago at Jhelum in Pakistan,
Fida arrived in 2002 with his mother and sisters to join his father who had settled in Brescia six years earlier. After having trained
as an electrician, Fida started full time work almost immediately but without ever forgetting the passion of his life: cricket. By
sheer chance he met Simone Gambino who was on a short visit to Brescia in 2006. The Federazione chairman, realising just
how strong Fida’s passion for cricket was, encouraged the youngster to focus on playing in the top league. From then, Fida has
been reaping the harvest of hard work and commitment. Selected to play in Italy Under 19 in 2007 when he was at Azzurra
Villafranca, he then moved to Trentino, proving to be decisive in the club’s last two victorious campaigns. As Trentino’s Under
19 coach he forged an excellent team in 2010, while proving to be a match winner in the Serie A 2011 finals against Pianoro,
emerging as the team’s top scorer in both matches.
