On the<br />
slopes of the<br />
Montalbano<br />
The Etruscan places to be found <strong>in</strong> and<br />
around the area of the Montalbano<br />
were <strong>in</strong> an ideal position to control the<br />
trade routes which led from the port<br />
of Pisa to the pla<strong>in</strong>s of the lower Arno,<br />
and thence diverged towards the Po<br />
valley to the north and <strong>in</strong>land Etruria<br />
(Volterra, Chiusi) to the south.<br />
On the ground floor of the<br />
V<strong>il</strong>la Ferd<strong>in</strong>andea, the Museo<br />
Archeologico displays f<strong>in</strong>ds from the<br />
excavations carried out at the ancient<br />
Etruscan settlement of Artim<strong>in</strong>o. Of<br />
special <strong>in</strong>terest is the black terracotta<br />
censor discovered <strong>in</strong> the entranceway<br />
to Tumulus C at Prato Rosello.<br />
At Comeana the Tumulus of<br />
Montefort<strong>in</strong>i and the Tomba dei<br />
Boschetti are both worth a visit.<br />
Larciano castello has a municipal<br />
museum conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Etruscan f<strong>in</strong>ds.<br />
The Municipal Museum of Fuceccio<br />
also displays a number of Etruscan<br />
objects.<br />
Montelupo Fiorent<strong>in</strong>o<br />
The Archeological and Ceramic<br />
Museum, which houses Etruscan<br />
objects from the necropolis at<br />
La Falsettaia and the v<strong>il</strong>lage of<br />
Montereggi.<br />
At Capraia e Limite the Museo<br />
archeologico di Montereggi conta<strong>in</strong>s<br />
Etruscan rema<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Of special <strong>in</strong>terest is a visit to the<br />
Area Archeologica di Pietramar<strong>in</strong>a,<br />
a locality occupied by the <strong>Etruscans</strong><br />
as early as the 7th century B.C.. Here<br />
to be found is the Masso del Diavolo,<br />
probably an ancient cult site.
