4 M. J. WIGGINTON
Synopsis of families and genera
Families are arranged alphabetically within each Order. The placement of genera closely follows
Grolle 1983a (421), except for the Lejeuneaceae which follows Gradstein 1994 (122). The 1071 taxa
are assigned to 146 genera in 47 families. The numbers in brackets against each genus indicate the
number of taxa currently accepted within the genus (but this number includes some doubtful taxa
which have not (yet) been synonymised or rejected, and taxa identified only to the genus). The numbers
in a small font refer to the African Index Muscorum region(s) in which the genus has been recorded.
Since the publication of Grolle 1995 (1) and Wigginton & Grolle 1996 (2), thirteen generic
names have been added to the sub-Saharan list: Apomarsupella, Aureolejeunea, Kymatocalyx,
Mnioloma, Paracromastigum, Sphenolobopsis and Xylolejeunea included in edition 1 of this checklist,
and Amphicephalozia, Denotarisia, Pellia, Plicanthus, Sauteria and Southbya in the present edition.
Capillolejeunea and Stenorrhipis have been placed in synonymy, Folioceros recognised at generic
level, and Hyalolepidozia, which was removed in edition 1 of this checklist, is reinstated.
