into the catch tray.<br />

– Old oil should be disposed off in accordance with<br />

the relevant local regulations and on no account<br />

be discharged into the sewerage system or into the<br />

ground.<br />

– Turn the mower upright and fill approximately 0.6 l<br />

quality oil (See Technical Data) through the filler.<br />

Screw on dipstick and check oil level ".<br />

Cleaning and replacing the air filter }<br />

– Loosen the screw on the air filter cover and open<br />

the cover downwards.<br />

– Carefully remove the filter insert and top out on a<br />

smooth surface or replace if very dirty.<br />

– Never oil the insert or blow out with compressed<br />

air. Very dirty or oily filter inserts must be replaced<br />

(air filter insert: order no. SA26547).<br />

– Replace the filter element in housing after cleaning<br />

or replacing and carefully replace cover.<br />

Under unfavourable work conditions (excessive dust)<br />

it will be necessary to clean during mowing or every<br />

3 months or after 25 hours of operation.<br />

12. Causes of faults and their remedy<br />

Fault<br />

Engine does not start<br />

Possible cause<br />

– Switch handle not pressed<br />

down.<br />

– No petrol.<br />

– Spark plug connector loose.<br />

– Spark plug defective or dirty or<br />

electrode burnt out.<br />

– Engine getting too much petrol<br />

(spark plug wet).<br />

– Air filter dirty.<br />

– Ignition defective.<br />

– Battery is not charged.<br />

– Connection cable between<br />

ignition key, battery and engine<br />

loose or without contact .<br />

– Loose cable lug at ignition<br />

lock.<br />

Checking the spark plug ¯<br />

To check for wear, remove the spark plug connector<br />

and unscrew the spark plug. If the electrode is worn<br />

badly the spark plug must be replaced. Order-no.<br />

SA16815. Otherwise it will be sufficient to clean the spark<br />

plug with a steel brush and to set the electrode distance<br />

to 0.75 mm. Screw in the spark plug (pay attention to<br />

sealing ring) into the engine by hand and tighten using<br />

the set screw wrench. Press on spark plug connector.<br />

Correct storage of the engine<br />

(when not used for a long period of time)<br />

– Let the engine run warm.<br />

– Empty the petrol tank or allow the engine to run<br />

until it stops due to lack of fuel<br />

– Provided the motor is still warm, drain off the oil. Fill<br />

with fresh oil (approx. 0.6 l, see. technical data).<br />

Remowing and re-charging the starter battery = + !<br />

– Re-charge the battery as described under section 5.<br />

Remedy<br />

– Press switch handle to upper<br />

part of handlebar.<br />

– Re-fuel.<br />

– Press on spark plug connector.<br />

– Replace or clean spark plug,<br />

set electrode distance to<br />

0.75 mm and replace spark<br />

plug is necessary.<br />

– Have it checked by the <strong>John</strong><br />

<strong>Deere</strong> dealer.<br />

– Clean or replace air filter insert.<br />

– Have it checked by the <strong>John</strong><br />

<strong>Deere</strong> dealer.<br />

– Charge the battery<br />

– Connect or make sure battery<br />

plug is connected to wiring<br />

harness.<br />

– Have it checked by the <strong>John</strong><br />

<strong>Deere</strong> dealer.
