Honorable Participants ,fellow Officers and Delegates, esteemed Visitors,
As the Secretariat of the conference it is our greatest pleasure to welcome you
all to this outstanding event called Genoa Model United Nations 2013.
On December 20 th 2011, a resolution was adopted by the General Assembly,
declaring 2013 the official year of Water Cooperation. Therefore, as a model of
the United Nations, this is the opportunity to try solving the major issues related
to this theme. Water, especially safe and drinking water, is essential for every
human being , but, in spite of that, every day around 783 million people have no
access to it. Moreover, being aware of the fact that the world’s population is
expected to grow reaching 9 billion in the next years, the percentage of the
population without access to safe water will even increase.
Nevertheless it is known that the General Assembly declared the access to
drinking water and sanitation to be an unalienable right, that should be granted
by the International and Constitutional law. But somehow it is still not
happening.
Our common aim is to understand the causes of this dramatic situation and to
collaborate in changing it.
This said, GeMUN and the other MUN conferences abroad are, thus, the
demonstration that youngsters care about the world they live in, struggling for
its preservation and improvement. Inspired by these principles we can help,
believing in the power of dialogue and cooperation, to achieve more significant
outcomes not only in on this specific issue, but also in many others.
Now, keeping in mind Secretary General Ban Ki Moon words “Water will play
a central role in creating the future we want”, we encourage you to raise your
voice and start to take an active role in the improvement of the future everyone
strives for.
We wish you to fully enter the spirit of GeMUN, and to carry on fruitful and
stimulating debates!
Yours Sincerely,
Elisa Izzotti Eleonora Bartolini Kimberly Andriani
