PREFACE
Greece is divided in 13 regions (perifereies). In the first edition (1997) of the Administrative
Division each region (perifereia) was further divided in departments (nomoi), provinces
(eparchies), municipalities (dimoi) and communities (koinotites).
In this second edition (1999), according to new legislation, the provinces (eparchies) have been
abohshed and the communities have been subsumed to municipalities for administrative
reasons.
Thus, according to the new Administrative Division, regions are now hierarchically divided in
departments and municipalities. Nevertheless certain communities continue to constitute
independent administrative authorities of the same level with that of municipalities and for this
reason are contained in the tables.
The transcription of names in their romanized version has been derived according to ELOT
743 romanization system.
Geographical names are provided in the genitive case, as they appear in the new law, joint with
the corresponding descriptive term. The proper use is better illustrated by the foliowing
examples:
