PREFACE<br />
Greece is divided in 13 regions (perifereies). In the first edition (1997) of the Administrative<br />
Division each region (perifereia) was further divided in departments (nomoi), provinces<br />
(eparchies), municipalities (dimoi) and communities (koinotites).<br />
In this second edition (1999), according to new legislation, the provinces (eparchies) have been<br />
abohshed and the communities have been subsumed to municipalities for administrative<br />
reasons.<br />
Thus, according to the new Administrative Division, regions are now hierarchically divided in<br />
departments and municipalities. Nevertheless certain communities continue to constitute<br />
independent administrative authorities of the same level with that of municipalities and for this<br />
reason are contained in the tables.<br />
The transcription of names in their romanized version has been derived according to ELOT<br />
743 romanization system.<br />
Geographical names are provided in the genitive case, as they appear in the new law, joint with<br />
the corresponding descriptive term. The proper use is better illustrated by the foliowing<br />
examples:<br />
