Checklist of the Flowering Plants of Afghanistan

A checklist of all flowering plants hitherto known from Afghanistan is given here. It is usefull
becaue the older issues of Flora Iranica are very incomplete and a lot of taxonomical changes have
been made since this time. Many new material collected in Afghanistan is known since that time.
The checklist is based on Flora Iranica, on several new taxonomic works on different groups and
on the rich material housed in the herbaria M, MSB and W, investigated by the author (especially the
collections of Podlech, Anders, Dieterle, Volk, Breckle p.p., Freitag p.p., Neubauer) and small
collections of several authors like Huss, Daniel, Draslar, Roemer, Wojtusiak etc.
Several critical groups are in need of a modern taxonomic revision. So surely many names have to
been changed in the future. This checklist may be the base for such revisions. For each taxon the
accepted name and the main synonyms are given. In the distribution all provinces are mentioned in
which the taxon has been found. In distribution lists the provinces in he limits of 1978 are used. The
newly established provinces Kapisa and Panjir (parts of province Parwan), Paktika (part of provinces
Paktia and Ghazni), Daykundi (part of province Orozgan), Sare-e Pol (part of province Jawz Jan),
Nuristan (part of prov. Kunar) and Khost (part of province Paktia) are not considered.
