Abstract<br />

This paper presents <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> litho– and biostratigraphic <str<strong>on</strong>g>data</str<strong>on</strong>g> and correlati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Middle</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Late</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Ufimian, Kazanian and Tatarian)<br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian Platform. The lithological descripti<strong>on</strong>s and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pale<strong>on</strong>tological c<strong>on</strong>tent (foraminifera, bivalves, ostracods, brachiopods,<br />

vertebrates, plants and acritarchs) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different units are exposed from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Barents Sea up to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caspian Sea.<br />

Résumé<br />

Cet article présente les descripti<strong>on</strong>s et les corrélati<strong>on</strong>s litho– et biostratigraphiques du Permien moyen et supérieur (Ufimien, Kazanien,<br />

Tatarien) de la Plate-forme russe depuis la mer de Barents jusqu’à la mer Caspienne. Les descripti<strong>on</strong>s lithologiques et le c<strong>on</strong>tenu<br />

palé<strong>on</strong>tologique (foraminifères, bivalves, ostracodes, brachiopodes, vertébrés, plantes et acritarches) des différentes unités s<strong>on</strong>t exposés.<br />

During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Internati<strong>on</strong>al Peri-Tethys Programme (1995–<br />

2000) and for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> realisati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> paleogeographic Atlas<br />

(Dercourt et al., 2000), very efficient collaborati<strong>on</strong>s were<br />

undertaken between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> French and Russian scientists, and<br />

particularly between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> VSEGEI <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> St. Petersburg and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris. Several proposals<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Peri-Tethys Programme were focussed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian Platform. During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last years, both teams<br />

worked toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> project <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> publishing in English <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

VSEGEI internal report <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> “Decisi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interministerial<br />

meeting <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong>al stratigraphy c<strong>on</strong>cerning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Middle</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Late</str<strong>on</strong>g> Paleozoic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian Platform: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g>” (Gorsky and Gusseva, 1990). This report is here<br />

completed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> studies realized during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Programme.<br />

This paper presents <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stratigraphy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Middle</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Late</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The Early <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g> part, included in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gorsky and<br />

Gusseva report (1990), will be published later.<br />

The ostracod fauna is updated by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> local works in Sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />

Cis-Urals and Precaspian Depressi<strong>on</strong> (E. Gusseva † and S.<br />

<strong>Crasquin</strong>-Soleau in this paper; Molostovskaya, 1997; Molostovsky<br />

et al., 1997; Kukhtinov and <strong>Crasquin</strong>-Soleau, 1999;<br />

<strong>Crasquin</strong>-Soleau, 2003). The paleobotanical <str<strong>on</strong>g>data</str<strong>on</strong>g> are thoroughly<br />

vetted by without systematic revisi<strong>on</strong> (i.e., syn<strong>on</strong>ymy<br />

is not keeping up to date).All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r fossil <str<strong>on</strong>g>data</str<strong>on</strong>g> are listed as<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were quoted in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> original descripti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> secti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Middle</str<strong>on</strong>g> – <str<strong>on</strong>g>Late</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g> time, almost all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Peri-Tethyan platform is under c<strong>on</strong>tinental or marginal<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s (Gaetani, 2000). The final stages <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>vergence<br />

between Laurussia, Kazakhstania and Angara result<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ural Orogenic belt. Between 20°E (Baltic Sea) and<br />

60°E (<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Urals), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian Platform lies from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Barents<br />

Sea to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> North up to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caspian Sea to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> South (Fig. 1).<br />

2. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Middle</str<strong>on</strong>g> – <str<strong>on</strong>g>Late</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g> stratigraphical correlati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

The time slice c<strong>on</strong>sidered here covered <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ufimian, Kazanian<br />

and Tatarian. The precise correlati<strong>on</strong>s with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

scale (IUGS 2000) are not easy. Indeed, quite all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Russian series are under c<strong>on</strong>tinental envir<strong>on</strong>ments and North<br />

American series (for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Middle</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g>: Guadalupian) and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chinese series (for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Late</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g>: Lopingian) are<br />

under marine envir<strong>on</strong>ments. The main useful tool for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

correlati<strong>on</strong>s between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different scales could be <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> paleomagnetism<br />

with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reversal between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kiaman Permo-<br />

Triassic superchr<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Illawara mixed polarity superchr<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The base <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Illawara mixed z<strong>on</strong>e is recognized in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tethyan domain (Haag and Heller, 1991; Baud et al.,<br />

1996). The K/I boundary is also recognized <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian<br />

Platform in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rnmost part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> western Urals, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> western<br />

and central part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Syktyokar area, in Perm – Viatka<br />

area and in Samara area (Gorsky and Gusseva, 1990). Gialanella<br />

et al. (1997) published developed results obtained in<br />

Tataria (Kazan area) and presented <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> correlati<strong>on</strong>s with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Tethyan domain. The limit is located at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boundary between<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Urzhumian and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Severodvinian series i.e. at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

boundary between early and late Tatarian (Table 2)asitwas<br />

presented by Lozovsky and Yaroshenko (1994) for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Moscow<br />

syncline. The correlati<strong>on</strong>s between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

scale (IUGS 2000) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian <strong>on</strong>e are summarized <strong>on</strong><br />

Two main domains <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sedimentati<strong>on</strong> are distinguished<br />

during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Middle</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Late</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Permian</str<strong>on</strong>g>: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Eastern European<br />

Basin (noted A <strong>on</strong> Fig. 2) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Western European <strong>on</strong>e<br />

(noted B <strong>on</strong> Fig. 2). They are subdivided in different facies<br />

belts presented <strong>on</strong> Figure 2. These two domains are heritage<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> anterior paleogeographic c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong>. The Baltic<br />

Shield extended eastwards with two major positive structures,<br />

namely <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Vor<strong>on</strong>ezh High and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ukrainian High.<br />

These highs separated <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Eastern European Basin (Western<br />

Urals, Precaspian and Dniepr-D<strong>on</strong>etz basins c<strong>on</strong>nected toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r)<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Western <strong>on</strong>e which is related to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Polish<br />

Basin (Gaetani et al., 2000).<br />

The correlati<strong>on</strong>s are presented by a series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tables<br />

(Tables 2 to 11) from North to South, belt by belt, for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Eastern European basin (Tables 2 to 10 p.p.) and after for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Western European Basin (Tables 10 p.p. and 11). The lithological<br />

descripti<strong>on</strong>s (when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> room was not sufficient in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

and is refers by a number in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Table) are given for all<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> intervals. The member “aleurolite” is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten used in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

facies descripti<strong>on</strong>. “Aleurolite” is equivalent to siltst<strong>on</strong>e in<br />

Russian literature.<br />
