Dal 2008 e' Professore di I fascia di Ecologia Marina (BIO/07-ECOLOGIA) presso la
Facoltà di Scienze Matematiche Fisiche e Naturali (Dipartimento di Biologia
Ambientale) dell'Universita' di Roma "La Sapienza".
Dal 1998 al 2008 e' Professore Associato di Oceanografia Biologica (BIO/07-
ECOLOGIA) presso la Facoltà di Scienze Matematiche Fisiche e Naturali (Dipartimento
di Biologia Animale e dell'Uomo) dell' Universita' di Roma "La Sapienza".
Dal 1984 al 1998 è stato ricercatore confermato presso lo stesso Dipartimento.
Ha avuto in affidamento retribuito presso la stessa Università l'insegnamento di
Oceanografia Biologica per gli anni accademici 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94,
1994-95, 1995-96 .
ATTIVITA` E PROGETTI DI RICERCA
1974-78 Consulente presso il Dipartimento di Pesca della FAO. In un primo periodo
collabora con l'EIFAC (European Inland Fishery Advisory Commission) per la
valutazione dei quantitativi di giovani di anguilla (cieche) catturati nei diversi
paesi europei. Successivamente con il CIFA (Committee for Inland Fisheries of
Africa per i problemi di pesca nell'area del Sahel e con il COPESCAL
(Commission for Inland Fisheries of Latin America) per la valutazione delle
risorse idriche dell'America Latina gestibili per attivita' di pesca .
1976 Collabora al programma di ricerca "Evoluzione delle comunita' di substrato
duro contro gradienti di parametri ambientali" del P.F. Oceanografia e Fondi
Marini (C.N.R.- Lab. Ecologia del Benthos, Ischia, Na).
1978 Consulente dell'I.U.C.N. (International Union for Conservation of Nature and
Natural Resources) per i problemi relativi ai criteri di scelta e gestione delle
aree marine da proteggere in Mediterraneo nel quadro del "Piano blu"
dell'UNEP.
1978-79 Collabora all'Unita' Operativa "Piano di sviluppo delle risorse biologiche in
aree eutrofiche costiere della Sicilia Nord occidentale" del P.F. Oceanografia e
Fondi Marini (C.N.R. - Istituto di Zoologia, Palermo).
1979 Collabora con l'Istituto di Ricerca sulla Pesca Marittima (C.N.R., Ancona) ad

uno studio sulla fascia costiera laziale finalizzato alla difesa e all'incremento
delle risorse biologiche costiere. E' la prima di una lunga serie di ricerche sulle
coste centro- tirreniche che saranno condotte parallelamente ad interventi di
gestione delle risorse biologiche marine mediante substrati artificiali.
1979 Consulente dell'Istituto di Economia Agraria per la realizzazione di uno studio
per la C.E.E. dal titolo: "Impatto regionale della politica della pesca della
C.E.E.. Situazione e prospettive del settore nelle regioni Sicilia, Calabria e
Campania".
1979 Consulente della Finanziaria Meridionale (Fi.Me.) per la realizzazione di uno
studio dal titolo: "Indagine conoscitiva sullo stato dell'acquacoltura salmastra:
potenzialita' di sviluppo del settore nel meridione d'Italia".
1979-83 Con finanziamenti dell'Amministrazione Provinciale di Latina svolge un ciclo
di ricerche triennali sulla fascia costiera compresa tra Anzio e Gaeta. Da tali
ricerche emergeranno principalmente una serie di indicazioni sui danni alle
biocenosi bentoniche ed agli stocks ittici derivanti dall'attivita' della pesca a
strascico illegalmente svolta all'interno delle tre miglia dalla costa.
1980 Progetto di ricerca sulla biologia delle risorse ittiche della laguna salmastra di
Burano (Gr) su incarico World Wildlife Fund.
1981 Ciclo annuale di ricerche sulle caratteristiche quali-quantitative della pesca
artigianale presso Fregene (RM) in previsione della realizzazione di una zona
di ripopolamento mediante barriere artificiali (in collaborazione con l'IRPEM-
CNR di Ancona).
1981 Ricerche per la valutazione degli effetti della pesca a strascico entro le tre
miglia dalla costa sulle praterie di Posidonia con finanziamenti della
Amministrazione Provinciale Latina.
1981 Ricerche avviate in seguito alla realizzazione di un'area a barriere artificiali
nella costa antistante Fregene (RM) su incarico del Ministero Marina
Mercantile e dell'Istituto di Ricerca per la Pesca Marittima (CNR, Ancona).
1982 Collabora ad uno studio sull'impatto degli effluenti termici della Centrale
Termoelettrica di Torvaldaliga (Civitavecchia) su incarico dell'ENEL e
convenzione con il Dipartimento di Biologia Animale e dell'Uomo
dell'Universita` di Roma "La Sapienza".
1982 Responsabile del gruppo di ricerca zoologica nello studio interdisciplinare
sull'"Ecologia dei laghi costieri laziali" condotto da alcuni istituti della Facolta`
di Scienze dell'Universita' di Roma "La Sapienza" su incarico
dell'Amministrazione Provinciale di Latina.

1984-88 Responsabile del progetto di ricerca "Valutazione degli stocks e dinamica delle
popolazioni di novellame naturale utilizzabile per l'allevamento, con studio
delle correlazioni con parametri ambientali ai fini della gestione delle risorse
pescabili - area di ricerca: Canale di Fondi" su finanziamento del Ministero
Marina Mercantile.
1984-88 Responsabile del progetto di ricerca "Valutazione delle risorse demersali - area
di ricerca: Torvaianica - foce del Garigliano" su finanziamento Ministero
Marina Mercantile.
1985 Prende parte alla realizzazione dello studio per la C.E.E. "Risanamento e
gestione produttiva delle lagune dell'Italia mediante lo sviluppo
dell'acquacoltura e della pesca".
1985 Collabora al progetto strategico C.N.R. Acquacoltura sul tema "Policoltura
Orata/Mugilidi con orata come specie dominante".
1985 Prende parte alle ricerche sul popolamento di Anguilla anguilla del Tevere su
finanziamento della Provincia di Roma.
1985 Svolge, in collaborazione con l'ENEA, la parte di indagini a mare relative alla
"Riserva Marina delle Cinque Terre" (Liguria), nell'ambito del piano di
interventi per la difesa del mare previsti dalla legge 979/82.
1986 Indagini su "Plancton e benthos" nello studio ENEL sull'impatto ambientale
delle centrali termoelettriche di Cerano e Brindisi.
1986 Collabora alla stesura del "Rapporto sullo stato dell'Ambiente" su incarico
dell'Ufficio del Ministro per l'Ecologia, per il settore "Benthos - Necton".
1987 E' incaricato dalla F.A.O. di scrivere un volume dal titolo:"Management of
coastal lagoon fisheries and aquaculture in Italy" per la serie "Fishery Technical
Paper".
1987 Collabora allo studio EC"Aquaculture and integrated management of coastal
wetlands of Mediterranean type".
1988 Prende parte ad un gruppo di lavoro che, a seguito di una spedizione, realizza
una prima pianificazione del Parco Marino delle isole Bajuni nel Sud della
Somalia, su incarico EC.
1989 Collabora allo studio di "Impatto ambientale per le opere idrauliche di
arginatura della laguna di Grado" nell'ambito dei Progetti Integrati Mediterranei
(EC).
1989 Indagini nello studio per la realizzazione della "Riserva Marina delle isole

Pontine" (Ministero Marina Mercantile). In particolare viene realizzata una
cartografia tematica dei fondali dell'Arcipelago.
1990 Collabora al "Progetto Tirreno" della Facolta` di Scienze dell'Universita` di
Roma "La Sapienza" per il settore "Mappatura delle praterie di Posidonia
oceanica del Lazio" su finanziamento della Regione Lazio.
1990 Responsabile di un nuovo triennio di ricerche sulle "Risorse Demersali del
Tirreno" su finanziamento Ministero Marina Mercantile.
1990 Responsabile della ricerca "Ruolo degli organismi bentonici della barriera
artificiale di Fregene nell'alimentazione della fauna ittica stanziale" su
finanziamento Ministero Marina Mercantile.
1990 Responsabile della ricerca "Caratteristiche ambientali e risorse da pesca della
Secca di Tor Paterno" su finanziamento del Ministero Marina Mercantile.
1991 Collabora al progetto "Gestione integrata degli ecosistemi litorali in un'area
destinata a Parco Marino: le isole Pontine" finanziato dal Ministero Marina
Mercantile, dal Ministero dell'Ambiente e dalla Comunita' Economica
Europea"
1991 Collabora allo studio di impatto ambientale della costruenda centrale elettrica
di Montalto di Castro per il settore "Mappatura della prateria di Posidonia
oceanica antistante Montalto di Castro".
1992-95 Responsabile per il Tirreno centrale e per la parte di elaborazione dei dati del
progetto "Mapping of italian demersal resources" su finanziamento della EC.
1993-96 Responsabile di un nuovo triennio di ricerche sulle "Risorse Demersali del
Tirreno" su finanziamento Ministero Risorse Agricole, Alimentari e Forestali.
1992-97 Responsabile, nell'ambito del progetto "Qualita' dell'Ambiente della Regione
Lazio" della Facolta' di Scienze dell'Universita' di Roma "La Sapienza", del
settore 'Monitoraggio di praterie di Posidonia oceanica' su finanziamento della
Regione Lazio.
1993-97 Responsabile del progetto di ricerca "Ripopolamento ittico in acque marine
oligotrofe (isola di Ponza) su finanziamento Ministero Risorse Agricole,
Alimentari e Forestali.

Riserva Marina di Ventotene.
1998 Responsabile del progetto di ricerca finanziato dalla Commissione Europea:
“Analysis of catches and fishing effort for stock assessment of Merluccius
merluccius in the central Tyrrhenian sea”.
1998 Responsabile dell’area Tirreno Centrale nello studio sugli sbarcati commerciali
della pesca a strascico: “Monitoring of the trawling and gillnet landings in the
central and Northern Tyrrhenian sea” finanziato dalla Commissione Europea.
1999 Responsabile di un progetto di ricerca dal titolo “Modalità di reclutamento di
specie chiave su substrati artificiali” finanziato dal Ministero delle politiche
Agricole e forestali.
2000 Responsabile di un progetto di ricerca sulle caratterisiche faunistiche dei laghi
salmastri pontini, finanziato dal Ministero delle politiche Agricole e Forestali.
2000 E’ responsabile del progetto di ricerca “Studio dell’ambiente marino del
Promontorio del Conero (An) in vista della realizzazione di una Riserva
Marina”, finanziato dal CNR – IRPEM di Ancona.
2000 Responsabile di un nuovo triennio di ricerche sulle risorse demersali dell’area
centro tirrenica, finanziato dal Ministero delle Politiche Agricole e Forestali.
2000-01 Prende parte al progetto Cartografia della Posidonia in Sardegna finanziato dal
Ministero dell’Ambiente seguendo i rilievi subacquei mediante R.O.V.
2002 Responsabile di un progetto di valutazione dell’impatto del ripascimento di
sabbie sui litorali laziali su incarico ICRAM.
2002 Partecipa al progetto di ricerca “Realizzazione di indagini per la conoscenza e
la valorizzazione delle attività di pesca e maricoltura in Toscana” finanziato
dalla Regione Toscana e dalla CE al CESIT (Centro Sviluppo Ittico Toscano),
al Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Uomo e dell’Ambiente dell’Università di Pisa,
al Centro Interuniversitario di Biologia Marina di Livorno.
2002 Partecipa al progetto di ricerca “La pesca con i rapidi lungo le coste del Tirreno
centrale e dell’Adriatico centrale” (“Study on the mixed-species catches of the
“rapido” trawl fishery along the Italian coasts”) finanziato dalla CE al CNR –
IRPEM di Ancona e al Centro Interuniversitario di Biologia Marina di Livorno.
2003 Partecipa al progetto di ricerca “Cartografia delle principali biocenosi marine
costiere, dei sedimenti, dello stato delle conoscenze e della naturalità.

Completamento delle conoscenze naturalistiche di base”, finanziato dal
Ministero per l’Ambiente alla Società Italiana di Biologia Marina.
2003 Coordinatore nazionale di due studi pilota in materia di scarto di pesca svolti
dalla SIBM per il Ministero delle Politiche Agricole.
2003 Responsabile di un progetto di monitoraggio della Posidonia oceanica del
Lazio settentrionale su incarico della Regione Lazio.
2004 Partecipa all’azione coordinata INDECO (Development of Indicators of
environmental performance of the common fisheries policy) Commissione
Europea- Sesto Programma quadro.
2004 Partecipa al progetto BECAUSE (Critical Interacion between species and their
implications for a precautionary fisheries management in a variable
environment- a modelling approach) Commissione Europea- Sesto Programma

2005 Prende parte ad un progetto per la valutazione delle Zone di Tutela Biologica
(ZTB) in relazione alla pesca italiana (Ministero per le Politiche Agricole).
2005 E’ responsabile di un progetto di cartografia delle biocenosi bentoniche della
Riserva Marina di Ventotene.
2005 E’ incaricato dalla FAO di formulare un progetto di cooperazione alla pesca per
i paesi del Mediterraneo orientale (Grecia, Turchia, Cipro, Siria, Israele,
Libano, Egitto).
2006-2007 E’ responsabile scientifico del Programma “Caratterizzazione e
monitoraggio dei popolamenti ittici presenti lungo la piattaforma continentale
Laziale in relazione all’utilizzo di depositi di sabbie marine relitte ai fini del
rinascimento” nell’ambito di una serie di convenzioni tra il Dipartimento di
Biologia Animale e dell’Uomo - Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, l’ICRAM
e la Regione Lazio.
2006-2008 Partecipa al progetto BEACHMED “Caractérisation des conditions hydrométéorologiques
en zone littorale et analyse des risques littoraux, du
comportement des ouvrages de protection et de la dynamique des prairies de
Posidonia oceanica“, Opération Cadre Régionale, Région Lazio.
2007-2008 E’ responsabile scientifico del progetto di realizzazione di un Gis Pesca
nazionale finanziato dal Ministero delle Politiche Agricole e Forestali.
