Isolation Measurement PV Converter
Application Note AN10-1AG
Application
The photovoltaic construction have to isolate across
earth very well. Currents which based on bad isolation
cause to high contact risk and additional power loss.
The complete isolation resistance is made up of
different components:
PV-Module

DC-Cable
Converter
Converters without an internal transformer are not
galvanically isolated from the power net. As per DIN
VDE 0126-1-1 it´s not allowed to go below a limit
isolation resistance between the converter and the
power net.
Based on the missing galvanic isolation a continued
measuring of the isolation resistance during the
converter is running is not possible. Therefore the
isolation resistance is measured before the converter is
connected to the power net (current sensitive fault
protection).
Products
Modern converters contain a integrated isolation
control. This control system check all components of
the photovoltaic construction of isolation failure. This
control system has high requirements on the
assembled
relay.’
Reed Relays from MEDER perfectly fulfill such
requirements. The Reed Technology makes it possible
to reach isolation resistance >10G Ohm. Another
advantage is the low power consumption. Reed Relays
only need energy during the switching process which
has a positive influence of the overall efficiency of the
converter. The high amount of 10 9 switching cycles
makes the Reed Relays suitable for long life
applications.
