SUmmary
The Department of Biology of the University of Trieste, as a partner of
the transnational cooperation project named PANET 2010 (Protected
Area Networks - Establishment and Management of Corridors, Networks
and Cooperation), within the programme Interreg IIIB CADSES (Central
Adriatic Danubian South Eastern European Space), has undertaken a
pilot action on the topic “Rising awareness on ecological networks”
within the theme of “Communication, participation, twinning and
cross-border cooperation”.
The pilot action deals with environmental education and support
of the institutions mandated to landscape planning and ecologic
networks.
The pilot action focuses on the following key aspects:
• Literature review of the legislation concerning nature conservation
in the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. A complex
regulatory system of protected areas exists in Friuli Venezia Giulia
that includes European, national and regional laws with frequent
overlays on the same areas. The repository of documents is made
accessible via a WebGIS system linking protected areas with the
relative legislative measures.
• Design and implement a WebGIS on Protected areas in Friuli Venezia
Giulia region to foster the dissemination and exchange of information
concerning conservation and environmental education. The study
area is characterized by a variety of valuable natural ecosystems
in a relatively small territory spanning from coastal areas to the
alpine region. This example may represent a model to develop
further at a broader scale.
• Publishing a textbook on regional protected areas to support
environmental education.
Parks have always been able to promote an environmental
understanding in the public opinion, offering a concrete
opportunity for environmental education, involving teachers
and students in a continuous synergy. The textbook structure
developed in the pilot action, allows the reader to focus on a
geographic area and, based on topics of interest, to gain a better
