Foreword The eighteenth “Riunione Nazionale di Elettomagnerismo” took place in Benevento, hosted by the University of Sannio, from Monday 6 to Friday 10, September 2010, and was attended by 173 registered participants. The XVIII RiNEm was promoted by the Italian Electromagnetics Society (SIEm), and organized by the Waves Group, Department of Engineering of the University of Sannio, under the auspices of the IEEE-Italy Section, the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), the Italian Physical Society, the Campania Region, the Benevento Province, and the Benevento Municipality. The scientific program spanned four and a half days, with nine plenary lectures, twenty oral sessions (scheduled to run in parallel pairs), two poster sessions, three special sessions, and a roundtable. The scientific program ended at noon of Friday 10, with the Young Author Prizes awarding ceremony. The Proceedings volume includes 113 oral presentations and 62 posters. The enchanting historical ambience of Benevento offered a unique framework to the Conference: oral sessions took place in the frescoed-vault halls of Palazzo S. Domenico (XIII century), the poster sessions in the Santa Sofia Cloister (XII century); the plenary lectures and the roundtable in the neighboring Auditorium of the Sannio Museum. The Cloister also hosted the Exhibitors’ booths, in the dedicated special session. The social program began with a welcome cocktail in the Hortus Conclusus gardens (XIII century), continued with a piano concert performed by the Queen Elizabeth and Tchaikowsky Prizes winner François - Joël Thiollier at Benevento’s City Theater, and ended with the social banquet in the Palazzo Marchesale of Cervinara (XVI century), with the fine cuisine of Marco Carli. During the roundtable a number of distinguished Scientists were honored by award plaques, on occasion of their retirement, in recognition of their outstanding research and teaching activities in Electromagnetics. The honorees were: Paolo Bernardi, Giuseppe Conciauro, Giorgio Franceschetti, Giorgio Gerosa, Giovanni Perona, Domenico Solimini, Carlo G. Someda, and Rodolfo Zich. The 2010 Barzilai young author Prize was awardet to Guido Valerio, author of Espressioni in Forma Chiusa per il Calcolo Rigoroso delle Onde Superciali di una Struttura Multistrato Arbitraria (DIFF9), for ‘the conceptual and practical significance of his work, and the high level of presentation’. The 2010 Sannino Prize was awarderd to Gennaro Bellizzi, author of On the Feasibility of Using Magnetic Nanoparticles and Rotating Magnetic Fields for Activation and Control of Nanomachines (MMAT1), for ‘the innovative character, elegant formalization and passionate presentation of his work’. The Latmiral Prize for the best poster paper, assigned for the first time and sponsored by E4-NVIDIA, was awarded to Fabio Baronio and Matteo Conforti, co-authors of Observation of Optical Beams Annihilation (POST34), for their ‘remarkable theoretical and experimental work aimed at demonstrating the possible existence of non-diffractive solitonic regimes in nonlinear resonant three-wave interaction’. The Felsen award for 2010 was not assigned. The success of the XVIII RiNEm was the results of the concurrent efforts and dedication of many people. Special thanks are due to Francesca Gori who managed the Conference Office at the highest professional level; to the SIEm Administrative Assistant Paolo Vitali; to Alessandra Bernini-Carri, who cleverly supported the organization for the University of Sannio; to Rosario Altieri and Massimo Di Rubbo, who technically supervised the audio-visual and networking facilities. Alessandra Boniello, Annarita Calandrini and Daniela Guardabascio supported all Participants efficiently and gracefully at the Conference HelpDesk... and for sure I am forgetting the valuable contribution of others. I would express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to all of them, on behalf of all Participants. Thanks to their commitment and talent, the XVIII RiNEm was a pleasant and rewarding experience for all of us. Innocenzo M.
