Joris Teepe and Steve Altenberg have been playing together for two decades,
performing in the most prestigious stages worldwide. Joris Teepe
was many times on the road and recorded with jazz giants Benny Golson
(historic member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers), and Rashied Ali (John
Coltrane’s drummer). He also performed and recorded with Tom Harrell,
Mulgrew Miller, Chris Potter, Don Braden, Gene Jackson, Randy Brecker,
Carl Allen and many other important New York based musicians. Steve
Altenberg, after becoming a very demanded drummer in New York and collaborating with, among others, John
Abercrombie, Barry Harris, Kevin Hays and Philip Harper, moved to Amsterdam where he has performed regularly
with some of the best players of the Dutch jazz scene: Michael Moore, Marc van Roon and Paul Berner. In this
special occasion they are introducing a promising 23 years old piano player, Giacomo Caruso. He has already
played in many important European theaters and festivals (ELBJAZZ festival, Aarhus Jazz Festival, Swingin’ Groningen
Festival, Stadschouwburg De Harmonie, Modica Miete Culture Contaminazioni Festival) with musicians such
as Kristijan Krajncan (semi-finalist of Thelonious Monk Competition 2012), multiawarded and multi-instrumentalist
George Dumitriu, composer Signe Bisgaard, and many other young talents such as Anna-Lena Schnabel, Konrad
Ullrich and Sergej Avanesov.
The repertoire of the trio is various: it includes original compositions by the young pianist, arrangements of American
jazz songs and free improvisations. Their music, solidly resting on jazz tradition, takes flight towards extemporary
excursions in many different territories: from rock to classical and gospel. Joris Teepe’s solidity melts well with
the music of Steve Altenberg, who “literally marries contours of notes while playing with silences. His light pulsation
and nuance do not have anything metronomic and instigate the music continuously” (Jazz Journal, England).
Giacomo Caruso’s fresh ideas are coherent and unpredictable, keeping audience’s attention spans constantly
engaged.
On the 31st of August 2012, the natural beauties of Cava Pietra Franco and the Baroque art of Modica, where
the cave leans over, inspired the three musicians who, with the support of a very attentive and warm audience,
brought to life an exciting live concert, conveniently recorded by 3 video cameras and ready to become an exceptional
DVD: Jazzin’ for Avis. This charity concert was promoted by AVIS Modica who devoted years to raising
awareness for the theme of blood donation through alternative ways.
