Compendium of Latvian Coleoptera, I 3
CHOROTYPES OF LATVIA
In Latvia, several species of Coleoptera and other invertebrates reach the southernmost,
northernmost, westernmost or easternmost extremes of their distributional area. The geographical
position of Latvia on the borders of the boreal and broad-leaved forest zones on one side, and the
forest and forest-steppe zones on the other, have made an excellent background for high beetle
species diversity.
Except the large, sometimes “transcontinental” chorotypes, like the Holarctic (incl.
circumpolar & boreomontane), Palaearctic (incl. North African-Eurasian, Eurasian), W
Palaearctic, Asiatic-European, Sibero-European, and European chorotypes, the territory of Latvia
includes the following other smaller chorotypes: Europeo-Mediterranean, N European, Central
European, E European, Europeo-Caucasian, Europeo-British, Siberian-Baltic, and finally the
Baltic chorotype.
