Una nuova sfida
per il futuro
“Noi stiamo lavorando in tempi difficili, così
essere capaci di capire fino in fondo e di declinare;
A new challenge
for the future
“We are working in difficult times, ever changing
and shifting, (…) beyond our ability to predict, for
the future has become difficult to govern.
I believe that the challenge facing children today is
(…) to think how to interconnect – this is the
watchword for the present and the future – a word
that we need to understand deeply and in all its
forms. We need to do so keeping in mind that we
live in a world made not of separate islands but of
networks… in this metaphor is contained both the
construction of children’s thought and our own
thought construction, (...) which belongs to a wide
archipelago where interference, interaction and
interdependence are constantly present even when
we do not see them.”
The city of Reggio Emilia
and its educational vocation
For more than 40 years Reggio Emilia has resolutely confirmed and given priority to an experience
demonstrating that education can be a fundamental resource for a city and development of its everyday
quality of life.
This system is the result of a historical and cultural process going back to the beginning of the last
century and developed thanks to the participation and solidarity of an entire community. The system has
never been static. Various solutions for organising and different types of school and management have
been adopted over the years for a better response to the demands of children and families.
Today with a local population of more than 150,000, early childhood services (0-6) completely cover
requests by families.
TO PAGE 2
La città di Reggio ... The city of Reggio...
futuro.
DA PAG.1 The highly developed nature of these services, together
Come è nata l’idea
– in rappresentanza dell’intero “sistema educativo
with other elements like the dynamic business
community and high levels of employment, has
supported the cohesive system and development which
are defining features of Reggio Emilia’s identity. It is
these same economic and cultural ambits which
dialogue constantly with the schools.
Following an innovative “network” model, Reggio
Emilia is a site of Modena and Reggio Emilia University,
created with support from local and business bodies to
encourage higher qualifications for young people.
This is one of the reasons that Jerome Bruner always
FROM PAGE 1
reminds people; “you cannot understand the Reggio
schools if you don’t understand the city that made them”.
Howard Gardner maintains that; “the educational
community is the most important success of the Reggio
schools”.
In fact for years the experience and its strongly defined
character have been a constant point of reference for
excellence, the subject of interest, study and exchange
for teachers, pedagogues, academics, policy-makers and
figures from culture and politics all over the world.
For the educational world today, the International Centre
project is a new challenge to the future.
How the idea was born
The idea of creating an International Centre in Reggio Emilia for giving value to
children’s, parents’ and teachers’ culture and creativity had its starting point in
suggestions made by Loris Malaguzzi. The idea was discussed at meetings with
different interested parties and began to take shape during the nineties when
commitment to the Centre was made by Reggio Emilia city administration (Comune)
and initiatives for public awareness were undertaken for widespread involvement by
citizens.
At that time international recognition arrived for Reggio educational services in
Newsweek (1991) and
in the shape of the Kohl
Prize (1992). Diana
municipal preschool
was chosen to represent
the entire “Reggio
educational system” as
a symbol of the highly
qualified and innovative
educational project.
From that moment we
began working in
Reggio Emilia to
breathe life into an
organism capable of
responding to
international
reverberations. Reggio
Children was created in
1994 through the
wishes of a group of
citizens, parents and
workers and the
Comune of Reggio
Emilia, and entrusted
with the task of constantly promoting and valuing our educational experience in
suitable ways.
The experience itself is distinguished by its strongly research-oriented nature and
by its observation and documentation of children’s thinking and work. We wish to
encourage further development of national and international relations and exchange
through common research projects and for this reason, in those same years, the idea
of a Centre for research and future strategic development matured.
diverse.
Why?
The International Centre was created to give value to
one of Reggio Emilia’s strongest and most defining
features; the ability to listen and give visibility and
support to the rights and requests of children, young
people, parents and teachers, and also to develop the
city’s potential and “vocation” as a pole of attraction
for all those involved in processes of education.
At the International Centre children and young people
will be able to learn through play in a “park” of highly
educational value.
Projects for the Centre and initiatives held there will
seek to offer opportunities for research in the pedagogy
of relations, committed to constructing new and richer
knowledge capable of interpreting development in
children, adolescents and adults within social contexts
of contemporary society.
The Centre is a place of special opportunity for
innovation and transformation in an important area of
Reggio Emilia and is therefore also a project for
enterprise featuring “innovative services” where the
social obligation to develop multiple aspects of
knowledge and the need for innovation with creation of
new, specialised jobs become an important opportunity
for planning and rethinking new urban scenarios in the
city.
With the International Centre fully operational many
employees from different professional backgrounds will
be involved in its running.
Children e Domus Academy (Milano).
installazioni, incontri, performance, fiera dell’usato
domestico e coinvolgendo bambini, ragazzi, adulti.
The history behind the Reggio Approach has always
proffered challenges. In Reggio these challenges were
confronted. I am certain, given the experience they
have already matured, that they will learn how to
confront new challenges, how to work together with
the community on a national and international level.
Pedagogy and Architecture
For the first time a professional development initiative
was held at the International Centre on 2-3 March.
The event was an international symposium on the
design of childhood environments and was promoted
by Reggio Children and the Domus Academy (Milan).
The course was open to designers and architects,
project managers, professionals from public and
private sectors, school directors and pedagogues.
It offered an opportunity for reflection on ideas
of the child, of school, of places for living and
the relationship between education and design culture.
March-April Educational
“One city, many children. Growing up and learning
The International Centre hosted choral reflections,
narratives and exhibitions on topics related to education.
Occasions were offered for using different languages
and fields of knowledge to discuss how children today
see the world – a constantly changing universe.
One of the events was entitled “The Visible School” and
was made up of documentation and imagery showing
ideas and experiences from schools in Reggio Emilia
(0-18 years).
Remida Day
7-15 May saw the sixth edition of special days
dedicated to creative recycling where matter and
materials could be rediscovered in their never-beforeseen
and astonishing dimension of “mutating beings”.
The whole city, in particular the International Centre
and surrounding areas, underwent transformation
to host installations, encounters, performances,
and a second-hand market for used household items
which involved children, young people and adults.

l’edizione 2005. Nascono così i primi quattro prototipi
I prototipi, rientrati a Reggio Emilia negli atelierlaboratori
dall’imprenditore Maurizio Fontanili.
insegnanti, pedagogisti e scuole dell’infanzia
per l’infanzia: morbidezza (tattile e visiva); sofficità;
e formazione dell’identità personale e uno strumento
September Educational
“Schools Open”
The beginning of the new school year was celebrated
by the community meeting together in and around
places of education for new generations.
The International Centre hosted appointments for
sharing and exchange about the relationship between
education and participation, re-establishing the pact
between school and city.
Art at the Centre
A project from Naples entitled “On children’s side”
featuring interactive work with sound, light and colour
and created with children in preschools and primary
schools was shown at the Centre.
The International Centre in its role as a place of
encounter for innovative experiences in schools in Italy
and throughout the world hosted the exhibition from 29
September-11 October. The exhibition is the fruit
of co-ordinated educational work carried out
with over 500 children from 3 to 10 years over
a prolonged period in the city of Naples.
A Ray of Light
Prototypes of interactive equipment named “Ray of
Light” were set up in the as-yet unfinished area of the
atelier-workshops at the International Centre.
Atelieristi, pedagogiste and teachers worked together
with a physicist and an architect, supported by
an “army” of keen parents offering their work
on a voluntary basis during working evenings.
The occasion came about through work on the identity
of the Loris malaguzzi International Centre together
with a desire to make atelier-workshop areas a special
zone of innovative research into children’s 100
languages in educational contexts using hands-on
experimentation.
At this point Reggio Children recieved an invitation
from the organisers of Genova’s Science Festival to
present their innovative experimental work in the
2005 edition of the festival. This is how the first four
prototypes were created and hosted by the Genova
Science Festival in November and a genuine
educational environment was set up for teachers and
children in preschools, elementary schools and
medium schools.
The “Ray of Light” atelier offers an opportunity to
experiment with light phenomena in the encounter
between different materials by using an interdisciplinarian
approach. The aim is for children and
teachers to become familiar with the “grammar” of
light and different features of effects created by
using certain instruments and tools.
The prototypes are now back in Reggio Emilia in the
atelier-workshop area of the International Centre and
the subject of study and experimentation by children
from pre, primary and medium schools offering an
opportunity to simulate the Grand Opening at the
Centre in February 2006.
Play+ Soft Exhibition
From November 2005 to February 2006 Play+Soft,
the new range of soft furnishings for childhood, will be
exhibited at the Centre. These have been created
with pedagogical consulting by Reggio Chidren
and developed by 28 international designers
under the art direction of ZPZ Studio.
Production is by Maurizio Fontanili.
The exhibition aims to illustrate the result of research
work and the long-running workshop experience which
involved designers, teachers, pedagogistas and early
childhood centres in Reggio Emilia for over two years.
PLAY+SOFT is a range of furnishings to substitute
or add to traditional furnishings. It introduces new
sensory qualities into landscapes and environments
for childhood; softness (tactile and visual), airiness, a
variety of consistencies and textures, smooth, elastic
finishes and a more varied chromatic approach than
simply red, yellow and blue. The furnishings contribute
to creating more complex, stimulating environments
for children to experience the adventure of growing
and forming personal identities and are a tool for
exploring new ways of inhabiting spaces.
Malaguzzi: Studio Tullio Zini, Studio Gabriele Lottici, ZPZ Partners – Mattia
Parmiggiani, Michele Zini, Claudia Zoboli.
Michele Zini
Uno degli obiettivi progettuali
era miscelare segni
contemporanei e l’identità degli
edifici esistenti. L’area Locatelli
aveva una “faccia” sicura, con
la bella pretesa di portare
dignità architettonica e cura in
un luogo industriale, di lavoro.
Il nostro tentativo è stato cercare
di fare risaltare questi aspetti,
di pulire, valorizzare e inserire,
come un ospite dialogante, il
mondo del contemporaneo e
dell’infanzia. Il progetto ha
quindi inserito la
polisensorialità e la flessibilità
necessarie a un ambiente per
l’infanzia con un occhio
all’asciuttezza e alla linearità
del luogo: il risultato è una sorta
di linguaggio dry pop, segni
freschi, espressivi ma semplici,
colori puliti, a vasta campitura,
mai cacofonici e con intorni
cromatici sempre limitati
all’interno di ogni ambiente.
Claudia Zoboli
The architectural project
A choral interview with winning architects of the national competition held in 1999
by Reggio Emilia Comune (municipality) for the design of The Loris Malaguzzi
International Centre. The architects include: The Tullio Zini Studio, The Gabriele
Lottici Studio and ZPZ Partners; Mattia Parmiggiani, Michele Zini, Claudia Zoboli.
How is the International Centre located in relation to the city?
Tullio Zini
From a town planning point of view the new International Centre
is in a prime location close to the railway station, bus station and
large 900-place car park servicing the railway station. This makes
it easily accessible for local, national and international visitors
and the new underground passage from the railway station means
it can also be easily reached from the Old Town.
Your architectural project is an intervention on pre-existing buildings.
What ideas helped to guide you between past and present?
Michele Zini
One of the aims of the project was to mix contemporary signs with
existing identity in the buildings. The Locatelli area had a reassuring “face” and had
aspired to bring architectural dignity and care to a place of industry and work. We
tried to highlight these elements, tidy them up and bring out their value and then
introduce the contemporary world and the world of childhood like a guest who would
participate in dialogue. So the project has introduced the multi-sensorial and flexible
qualities necessary in an environment for childhood but with an eye to the clean
lines of the place. The result is a kind of “dry pop” style; fresh gestures which are
creative but simple, large fields of clean colour which never clash and chromatic
surrounds limited to the interior of each space.
Claudia Zoboli
There is technology here but it purposefully does not flex its muscles. Digital technology
allows us to supply services without limitations of form and function but the image of
high-technology has been deliberately kept at a distance and soft-technology prioritised.
Advanced equipment in the 400-seat lecture hall, technology for managing lighting, the
wiring and independent heating systems all serve the purpose of making the centre modern
and functional but they are all soft technologies and hidden. To take just one example;
the light commands in the Liberty (Art Nouveau) Villa work on infra-red. There are no
wires or cuts in the walls so that the original wall paintings would not be damaged.
Could you give us a brief explanation of the general plan?
Tullio Zini
The organisational layout of the industrial complex was very clear and rational. A
series of parallel galleries serviced cheese warehouses set out like teeth in a comb.
It was a linear system with the Villa acting as organisational headquarters to a series
of galleries and warehouses. Our project exploits the clarity of this layout but alters
the overall distribution by introducing a large entrance hall into the central courtyard.
The routes connecting various activities all start from this pivotal space.
In our project we used the original basic scheme of parallel galleries connected by
Potete spiegare brevemente l’impianto generale?
Tullio Zini
ottimizzarne l’uso. Sarà perciò possibile far funzionare in tempi
7
outdoor pathways to create a three-dimensional mesh of intersecting geometric
routeways inside the buildings to connect horizontally and vertically.
This complex system of routeways not only offers the advantage of linking all the
activities, it also makes it possible to use them separately and optimise their use.
This means that workshop areas, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms and professional
development offices can function at different times and be managed independently.
Heating and air conditioning systems have the same built-in flexibility of independent
organisation so that different activities can be organised independently and use of
the facilities can be extended into evenings, as in the case of the restaurant, meeting
rooms and exhibition areas, with obvious returns on an organisational level.
In some of your writing you discuss the link aesthetic...
Mattia Parmiggiani
The problem is not simply of link aesthetics or stylistic appearance but directly involves
different levels of usability in the project.
Let me explain: for current models of design to be efficient they have to be capable
of simultaneously marrying and putting together different semantic ambits, different
forms of knowledge, artistic appearance and registers of meaning in one creative
process.
The project for the International Childhood Centre takes its life from this approach.
Different environmental qualities are connected and merge in one large workshop of
meaning.
We know that much of your attention was given to combining aesthetic and functional
qualities with economy of cost.
Claudia Zoboli
One of our challenges was to obtain a precise identity at the same time as a nonfinished
product; to allow and support different uses changing over time whilst also
conferring identity to support and represent the identity of childhood and children
Il progetto architettonico / The architectural project
dell’ambiente (luci, colori, materiali, clima)…
Michele Zini
a materiali lisci, finiture lucide e opache,
contemporanee, colori iconici e filmici. La
tavolozza dei colori si allontana dal banale
giallo-rosso-blu e utilizza tinte che si
armonizzano con il legno e la pietra
esistenti (mandarino, verde prato, giallo
grano, sabbia, limone), colori luminosi, di
media saturazione alta luminosità, presenti
in una sorta di bicromia tra colore-materiali
e colore filmico.
numericamente molto grandi in quanto
contemporaneamente racchiudono più
competenze tecniche; in Italia spesso si opera
in modo diverso...
Mattia Parmiggiani
Questa domanda porta inevitabilmente a
parlare di specializzazione professionale.
Soprattutto all’estero la dimensione dei
progetti architettonici e la maggior
trasformabilità delle città richiede agli
studi professionali forti competenze
which the centre has as reference and the idea of an approach towards research
which it intends to explore and promote.
Tullio Zini
In order to keep a check on formal quality with low construction costs you need a
positive attitude, awareness and considerable experience on the part of the
construction company, apart from a large dose of optimism.
It has to be recognised that the “Serena Costruzioni” company made it possible to
maintain quality on the building site and were assisted in the task by the willing
attitude of some excellent workmen.
In these circumstances it is the architect’s task to continue checking the project,
make careful evaluation and select ”markers” which can be considered significant
for the quality and legibility of the project. This is patient and painstaking work but
it can sometimes prove very useful.
We are aware that living quality and quality of the senses cannot be achieved by
architecture alone but that furnishings, environmental communication and care for
the environment combine together for this…
We know how much you consider it important to design using an environment’s
sensorial qualities (light, colours, materials, climate).
Michele Zini
The proposed aim of the project was to offer users an environment which was rich
from a sensorial point of view, stimulating and supportive of children’s cognitive
processes and of adults’ pleasure in inhabiting it. There are textured, coarse and
woven materials juxtaposed with smooth ones, finishes which are glossy or matt,
antique finishes (the cement columns, bricks in the walls, wooden beams) and
contemporary ones, iconic colours and colours in coatings.
The colour palette is far from the usual yellow-red-blue and uses shades which
harmonise with existing wood and stone (tangerine, grass green, corn yellow, sand,
lemon). They are light-filled colours, with medium saturation (depth) and high
luminosity and are present in a kind of bi-chromatism going from colour as material
to colour as film. Lights are often attached to or hung from the ceiling and used to
add softness and different qualities of light, to supply different colours and types of
light and generate different types of shadow.
Some architect’s studios employ large numbers of people because they deploy many
technical skills at the same time. In Italy work is often done in a different way.
Mattia Parmiggiani
This question inevitably leads to a discussion of professional specialisation.
Particularly in other countries the size of architectural projects and greater
possibilities for transforming cities require professional studios to have strong
specific skills and a greater work force in the process.
The Italian model is much more chaotic-osmotic in character with its constant
dialectic between historic towns and the idea of continuity. This does not mean it
is less efficient, on the contrary, the leaner size of Italian studios means they often
manage to better control and finalise the aesthetic quality of their projects.
ingegneri strutturali, termotecnici, elettrotecnici e illuminotecnici, specialisti in
stagioni, colori e profumi diversi.
prodotti dai bambini dentro i laboratori.
“Invito a…”
Tullio Zini
Planning difficulties and the
unpredictable nature of design
projects typical of the Italian
architectural world have led to
architects using the same model
of temporary link-ups between
small groups which we already
find in small industrial
businesses.
Small, agile studios of 6-12
people learn to collaborate and
group together depending on the
characteristics and size of the
work to be done.
On this project, between design architects, structural architects, systems designers,
quantity surveyors and various specialists, 24 people were employed at different
times,
What major worries did you encounter along the way? And major satisfactions?
Tullio Zini
Financial considerations were a major obstacle to work. However planning delays
for the project by responsible bodies also created difficulties and made problems of
economy worse. Sometimes we had to wait up to two years for approval. Inflation in
the building industry is higher than official rates and these delays aggravated financial
aspects.
Satisfactions? First of all the fact that we have completed the first of the three phases
of work.
Another is our relationship with the extraordinary world of Reggio schools; continual
visits from foreign study groups, about 1,200 people, and the interest the Centre has
provoked in important figures in the city and the world of international culture.
These have all been very gratifying factors, occasions you don’t get on every building
project.
Gabriele Lottici
Having followed the work site for its entire duration I can say we encountered various
obstacles to carrying out our work. On one hand the very large size and complexity of
the site with profoundly different kinds of work ranging from restoring paintings to
structural consolidation work. On the other we had deadlines for completing the
work and problems organising times and methods in order not to create overlapping
which would compromise workers’ safety as often happens. It was also particularly
important to co-ordinate and put together work by different specialists who were
involved in planning and management; structural engineers, heating technicians,
electricians and lighting specialists, specialists in safety and fire regulations, quantity
surveyors and site assistants.
What importance has been given
to the outdoor area in your
project?
Tullio Zini
Alongside the workshops there
are areas with protective wooden
structures planned for outdoor
work. These are fenced off by
small hanging gardens designed
to give different colours and
smells according to the seasons.
The small north-easterly park
was designed with green areas
“constructed” in plant squares of different heights and texture creating a series of
pathways and openings with small pedestals for temporarily exhibiting statues
produced by children in the workshops.
The roof terrace on the first floor of the main Villa has been planned as a hanging
garden with flower beds, benches, and small gazebos for employees to relax in and
reception parties for the numerous delegations visiting the centre. The site has the
advantage of being close to the restaurant kitchen.
The outdoor area should also be further embellished with a work of art by Richard
Serra, the renowned American sculptor who as part of a larger project in the city
entitled “An invitation for …”,
has chosen the International
Centre as a location for one of
his works.
It is a large iron sculpture which
will be placed on the new axis
and entrance to the Centre so
that it “accompanies” visitors
into the Centre with added
emotional impact.
Il progetto architettonico / The architectural project
campagne tantissima gente e formò numerosi operai,
intorno era tutta terra lavorata a orto, oppure addirittura
agricolo.
c’erano sei case. Là in fondo (…) c’era una casa sola, di
Locatelli, Locatelli che c’aveva i suoi operai e a sinistra
c’era il magazzino del formaggio…”
Gualtiero, operaio “Reggiane”, 1906
intelligente architettura industriale d’inizio
secolo, da magazzini di stagionatura del
formaggio sono stati acquistati dal Comune di
Reggio Emilia nel 1998 per essere destinati a
Centro Internazionale dell’infanzia, quale
finalizzati a ridefinirne l’identità.
Come lo stabilimento Locatelli, anche l’ex
fonderia Lombardini, da luogo del lavoro oggi
è divenuto luogo della cultura e dello
spettacolo: è infatti sede stabile della
Compagnia Nazionale della Danza.
Sempre nel quartiere di Santa Croce la
settecentesca Villa Cougnet è stata
recentemente ristrutturata per ospitare la
biblioteca, oggi frequentatissima da giovani
di ogni età e cultura.
Il luogo / The place
poi caserma, ora sede universitaria.
10
“In these places, in the first decades of the nineteen
hundreds we can see urban culture in the making, the
birth of the modern city with its specific features of
economy and planning. This is where the industrialised
city of Reggio Emilia was born (...)”
The Loris Malaguzzi International Centre is located to
the north of the old town, behind the railway station in
the Santa Croce neighbourhood where, at the beginning
of the nineteen hundreds, the
city’s first industrial area known
as “The Reggiane”, took shape.
Reggio Mechanical Works [Officine
Meccaniche Reggiane]
was the name of the city’s first
and most important factory, soon
to become the great local
industry attracting many, many
people from country areas and
training numerous workers.
These people, “gente nuova”
[new people] arrived from the
provinces and many places in
the North and South so that
between 1900 and 1920 the
population of Reggio Emilia
went from 58,000 to 82,000
inhabitants.
“This here was a farming neighbourhood, in fact round
here all the land was used for growing vegetables and
even crops. There weren’t many houses here, the road
… Via Bligny wasn’t a road, it was a caradoun [dialect],
a country lane…”
Medeo, “Reggiane” worker, 1915
“Oh, a horse used to pass by every so often, there wasn’t
really a lot of traffic, there was no through way, the road
finished here. Let me see, there were one, two, three,
four... up the road there were four houses. Down there
at the end (…) there was a house on its own, Locatelli’s.
Locatelli had his own workers and on the left there was
a cheese warehouse …”
Gualtiero, “Reggiane” worker, 1906
(Quotations from the pamphlet “The ex-Locatelli area, Santa Croce,
the Reggiane Factory and the city”, edited by Istoreco - Reggio
Emilia Municipality)
In the Santa Croce area there were several groups of fine
buildings and one of the most significant was certainly
the one which for over half a century housed “Locatelli”,
an agricultural industry brand which Reggio Emilia was
proud of; an important part of the city.
The Locatelli buildings are a clear example of intelligent
early 20th century industrial architecture. From their
initial destination as warehouses for maturing
cheese they were acquired by the Comune
(municipality) of Reggio Emilia in 1998 to
become an International Childhood Centre
crowning a journey of social commitment by all
local citizens and local public institutions.
The International Centre is located in what for
many years was an industrial area
characterised by wide-reaching social and
urban change. “Places of work” nowadays
require different kinds of space and urban
change is imposing interventions for urban
renewal and re-qualification of a vast area –
the area to the north of Reggio – which has
undergone profound transformation. At this
time the neighbourhood has 13,000
inhabitants (the population of Reggio Emilia
is more than 150,000). Of these 14.8% are
aged between 0-14 years and a high proportion
are immigrants who settled here in the 1970s because
property prices were low. This means the neighbourhood
has some special features when compared with the city
as a whole. It is an area where families on average are
larger and a little poorer. Different cultures cohabit and
risk of lack of connection with the traditional social
fabric (residents with longer roots, most of whom are
now elderly) is quite high. This is one of the reasons the
Comune (municipality) chose to invest in industrial areas
which had fallen into disuse at the end of the 1990s
encouraging other initiatives for re-qualifying areas with
the aim of redefining their identity.
Like the Locatelli premises the Lombardini ex-foundry
has gone from being a place of work to a place of culture
and performance. In fact it has become the official
home of the National Dance Company.
Going back to the Santa Croce neighbourhood, the
eighteenth century Villa Cougnet has recently been
renovated to house a library now widely used by people
of all ages and cultures.
These examples of transformation in areas lying
immediately outside the city centre can contribute to
giving the city itself a new identity if they become
connected.
Another important example of urban re-qualification
which has taken place within the old town is the
transformation of an ex barracks, the Zucchi building.
proiettare l’intera città verso scenari internazionali.
Altre città lo hanno fatto: Barcellona, Berlino,
Edimburgo, Manchester, Stoccolma hanno scelto di
investire su luoghi culturali come
forte elemento catalizzatore di
occasioni di sviluppo: talvolta è un
unico luogo-simbolo a divenire
oggetto trainante della
trasformazione della città stessa,
come il Museo Guggenheim a Bilbao.
La città di Reggio Emilia, anche in
questo caso, con il Centro
Internazionale Loris Malaguzzi fa
una scelta coraggiosa, che necessita
del sostegno di tutti coloro che
credono nei bambini, in una
educazione innovativa, e che
guardano al futuro.
11
This was built in 1895 as a livestock market, later
became a barracks and is now a university building.
This is how Reggio Emilia, growing and evolving with
its new inhabitants, confronts issues common to many
European cities – not without difficulty and conflict.
Outlining a new identity for a city is not an easy journey.
Values need to be re-defined and shared with old citizens
and new. To this end investment in know-how,
knowledge, culture and university is strategic for being
better prepared to face complex situations, create a future
for young people, better quality of life for citizens,
further re-qualify urban areas and project the entire city
towards international status.
Other cities have done it; Barcelona, Berlin,
Edinburgh, Manchester and Stockholm
have chosen to invest in places of culture
as strong elements for catalysing
development opportunities. Sometimes a
single iconic place (like the Guggenheim
Museum in Bilbao) has become the object
and symbol of transformation of the city
itself.
Once again the city of Reggio Emilia has
made a courageous choice with the
International Centre, a choice requiring the
support of all those who believe in children,
who believe in innovative ways of educating
and who believe in and look to the future.
Remida Day 2005
storici. Luoghi solo di transito e non di
aggregazione.
The underground passage linking the International
Centre to the railway station becomes a meeting
place for children and bicycles.
The car park transformed into a market square.
These are two examples of the attempt to
transform and give identity to what
anthropologist Marc Augè calls “non-places”;
areas and buildings which are typical of
contemporary life, characterised by their nonrelational
nature and having no history.
Places of transit rather than congregation.
Invito a... Richard Serra
umana in relazione all’altezza degli edifici e
I volumi stimolano
artisti riflettono sui luoghi stessi, intesi come memoria
An invitation for... Richard Serra
A project for the new International Centre
The work is located so as to preserve a human scale in
relation to the height of the buildings and the spatial
continuum of the entrance plaza. The sculptural plaza
will define an orientation to and from the Centre and
collect and gather people and children through its
sculptural continuity.
The proposed sculpture is 28 metres long, 4.5 metres
high and its curvature is that of an elongated horizontal
“S” shape. The volumes animate and implicate the
viewer in the movement from the street entrance on to
and across the plaza and to the entrance of the
International Centre for Childhood.
The main concept behind the sculptural plaza is to make
a cultural transition from the outlying street and urban
environment to the interior space of the plaza, in effect
to creat an animated public space for the children of
the Centre. The intention is to make a place where
children will play and assemble for without their
inclusion the work will have no meaning.
Richard Serra, June 2005
Brief biography
Richard Serra was born in San Francisco in 1939 and is
internationally recognised by critics as one of the most
important and innovative sculptors in the history of modern
art. He is an artist capable of being extremely conceptual
and at the same time strongly physical and material.
Freed from all symbolic intention and brought into the
realm of the everyday, Serra’s works are intrinsically
connected to their relationship with a public encouraged
to explore them from multiple points of view, moving
around them and sometimes inside them. Through his
sculpture viewers are especially invited to relate to the
exhibition space itself, with urban architecture or
surrounding landscape in a dialogue where the primary
function is to give habitual perceptions of reality new
meaning.
International Winter Institute
23 febbraio - Compleanno Loris Malaguzzi
Emirati Arabi Uniti, Filippine, Finlandia, Germania, India,
Iran, Kenya, Malesia, Pakistan, Polonia, Russia, Turchia,
Venezuela, lavoreranno contemporaneamente
all’approfondimento dell’esperienza pedagogica reggiana.
esperienze educative innovative.
I quattro gruppi saranno così articolati:
- Leadership Study Group (rivolto ad amministratrori,
politici, imprenditori, dirigenti, assessori all’educazione,
Futuri / Futures
responsabili di Fondazioni)
- Students and Professors Study Group (per studenti e
(italiano/inglese).
February 2006 heralds the Grand Opening of the Loris
Malaguzzi International Centre and simultaneous simulations
of several initiatives for children, young people, parents,
educators, and professionals from different backgrounds.
These will be open to local citizens and hundreds of people
from Italy and other countries in the world.
International Winter Institute
23 February - Celebration of Loris Malaguzzi’s birthday
From 15-25 February 2006 four hundred participants
from many countries of the world, including Angola,
Belize, Brazil, Canada, China, United Arab Emirates,
Philippines, Finland, Germany, India, Iran, Kenya, Malaysia,
Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Venezuela, for the
first time ever divided into four study groups aimed at
people with different professional backgrounds, will work
simultaneously on exploring the Reggio educational
experience.
This is an important professional development initiative
for an international public. Participants will have
opportunities for meeting and speaking with personnel
in Reggio infant-toddler centres and preschools and for
studying the Reggio Approach closely in visits,
presentations, meetings and mutual exchange.
We join Jerome Bruner in expressing his desire and hopes
that the International Centre will become a pivotal place
for meeting betwen people who conduct innovative
educational experiences in Italy and the world.
The four groups will be made up as follows:
- The Leadership Study Group for administrators,
politicians and business people, managers, local
government education officers and foundation managers
- The Student and Professor Study Group for students
and lecturers in early childhood in colleges, universities
and secondary schools
- The Atelierista Study Group open to atelieristi, art teachers
and professionals from music and theatre backgrounds or
children’s museums, science museums and exploratorium
- The International Study Group for two hundred teachers,
educators, pedagogisti, co-ordinators and educational
consultants.
Exhibitions
February 2006 offers an occasion for giving visibility to
two new projects; a history of infant-toddler centres and
schools in Reggio Emilia and a research project conducted
on relations between children and places in the city.
“One city, many children”
History Exhibition
A narrative taking us through a history of the ideas and
educational experiences in Reggio Emilia and putting them
into the wider context of Italian history with reference
also to world events.
The history exhibition will also function as a research
workshop with sections for deeper exploration which can
be updated and added to over time. This is a “place”
which will be permanently enriched by documentation
from individual actors and by a collective history.
Narrative in the exhibition will be in different media allowing
various levels of reading. Traditional panels combining words
and images will be accompanied by videos and hypertext.
Particular attention will be given to oral narration and music.
Layout of the exhibition will provide opportunities for pause
and in-depth reading and some audio sections and projected
images will also be specifically for children.
The exhibition and exhibition catalogue will be bilingual
English and Italian.
scuole dell’infanzia comunali e convenzionati.
contemporanea, Luciano Fabro, Sol LeWitt, Eliseo
educare e sostenere i bambini all’ascolto dell’ambiente
Sala Mostre dedicata a Marco Gerra
Nell’occasione, la Sala Mostre del Centro Internazionale
sarà ufficialmente inaugurata e dedicata al pittore
reggiano Marco Gerra.
Sala Mostre.
The “Dialogue with Places” Exhibition
Since January 2005 the “Dialogue with places” project
has involved children and teachers in 13 municipal and
affiliated infant-toddler centres and preschools. During
the project children encountered and entered into dialogue
with a place in the city, the Loris Malaguzzi International
Centre, while building work was still in progress and set
up an environmental art workshop experience leading to
the creation of various “installations”. These installations
will be shown in the exhibition giving visibility to processes
of learning and knowledge in the children and adults
involved.
This journey was suggested by another project
currently in course entitled, “An invitation for …”
promoted by the Comune (municipality) of Reggio
Emilia. Important contemporary international artists;
Luciano Fabro, Sol LeWitt, Eliseo Mattiacci, Robert
Morris and Richard Serra have enriched the city with
important works of art in the conviction that art is able
to transmit new emotions and a renewed awareness
of places, their history and identity. Each artist chose
a place they found stimulating. After establishing a
relationship and empathy with the place they sought
to create a work of art capable of dialogue with it, at
the same time respecting the place’s identity and
altering it.
Processes of relationship and empathy are part of
the strategies used by children when they meet and
get to know the surrounding environment. It is an
approach tightly weaving together knowledge of an
environment or place and expressivity, aesthetics and
the search for communicative effectiveness/
capability.
For these reasons it is felt to be vital to educate and
support children to “listen” to the surrounding environment
and construct journeys of sensibility with them in order
to oppose indifference and uncritical acceptance of
environments without quality.
Exhibition Hall dedicated to Marco Gerra
On this occasion the Exhibition Hall in the International
Centre will be officially inaugurated and dedicated to the
Reggio painter Marco Gerra. In November 2005, Gerra’s
wife, Anna Maria Ternelli, donated a significant sum of
money for the completion of work on the Auditorium and
Exhibition spaces.
ReggioFilmFestival
