Guglielmetti da ragazzo abitava nellazona del Monumentale - famoso cimitero dellacittà di Alessandro Manzoni, una specie dimuseo a cielo aperto, vista la magnificenzaartistica di tante sue tombe (vi fanno persinovisite turistiche guidate) – ed ha vinto, nello suosport, la ginnastica artistica, due medaglie d’oroai Giochi Olimpici di Los Angeles 1932,trionfando sia nella gara a squadre che nelvolteggio a cavallo. Corre fluido e sincero ilfiume dei suoi ricordi... “Partimmo da Napolisul transatlantico Conte Biancamano: dodicigiorni di traversata oceanica per raggiungere lametropoli di New York. Da lì prendemmo iltreno: furono altri cinque giorni di viaggio”,tagliando The Big Country, la frontiera dei nostrifilm e fantasie...Ma, signor Guglielmetti, come vi eravatepreparati ai Giochi? “Eravamo stati inallenamento collegiale, sin dal mese di marzodi quell’anno, nella struttura della società Fortie Liberi di Monza. Ci allenavamo nella sala dellascherma, dove erano sistemati anche i lettiniper dormire. Nei locali sottostanti c’erano lecucine. Praticamente facevamo vita daprofessionisti, senza, tuttavia, essere pagati! Io,prima, lavoravo in un’azienda di fotoincisioni.Quando andai alle Olimpiadi, mi licenziarono...Avrei dovuto fare anche il servizio militare, ma,date le circostanze, ottenni una proroga. Unavolta tornato dalle Olimpiadi, dovetti recarmi aPadova, nell’arma dell’Aeronautica. Lì – leipensi - c’era il comandante della squadriglia delfamoso raid su Vienna nel corso della PrimaGuerra Mondiale, il quale fece in modo di farmitrasferire a Milano perché io potessi allenarmi.In tal modo mi ritrovai all’aeroporto Taliedo,dove si trovavano gli stabilimenti Caproni”.Stiamo vedendo un’epoca e una cittàovviamente molto diverse da quelle cui orasiamo abituati, un’altra Italia. Ma torniamo allacarriera sportiva di Savino Guglielmetti... “Hocominciato a fare ginnastica artistica nei localidella scuola elementare Moscati. Ricordo chemi dilettavo, però, anche nel salto con l’asta.Le aste di bambù non erano certo elastichecome quelle che si usano oggi: ricordo ancheche una, al Campo Giuriati, mi si spezzò. <strong>Il</strong> miorecord era 3,80 m”. Quello italiano era 4,20 m,quindi non era poi così male in quest’altraspecialità il nostro signor Savino. Un atleta versatile,polivalente. Del resto tali sono i ginnasti,re della forma e forza fisica, padroni delleproprie evoluzioni, una danza di precisione egrazia ed eleganza e coraggio. Prosegue il suoracconto Savino Guglielmetti... “Infine passaialla Pro Patria. Mi allenavo alle scuoleelementari di Porta Nuova (ancora esistono).La palestra era al livello del Naviglio: mentreeravamo impegnati negli esercizi, vedevamo ibarchini e le chiatte passare”. Un’immagineveramente d’altri tempi e assolutamentefascinosa.Dopo quegli ori olimpici Guglielmetti riuscìa vincere anche cinque campionati italianiassoluti. Arrivarono, poi, i Giochi Olimpici diBerlino 1936... “Ero allo stadio, in occasionedella gara di salto in lungo, che finì con il trionfodi Jesse Owens sul suo rivale tedesco. Tutto lostadio ammutolì e io vidi Adolf Hitler andarsenevia stizzito”. La carriera di Savino Guglielmettifinì a Londra, Olimpiadi del 1948. Dal 1943, adogni modo, Guglielmetti si era impiegato inmaniera continuativa all’Azienda Tramviaria diMilano, dov’è rimasto fino al 1971, anno in cuiha maturato il diritto alla pensione. Non si puòdire che gli olimpionici di un tempoguadagnassero tanto da poter vivere di renditaper il resto dei propri giorni! Vero è che gli onorinon mancavano... “Tornati da Los Angeles, fuorganizzato un gran ricevimento all’Arena, doveil Principe Umberto ci consegnò una medagliaricordo” (insieme con lui fu premiato anchel’altro milanese Luigi Beccali, primo, negli stessiGiochi, nei 1500 m). Gli olimpionici furonoricevuti persino da Benito Mussolini a PalazzoVenezia.Savino si reca tuttora, ogni giorno, nellapalestra di via Romagna, nella sua amataMilano, dove segue l’attività ginnica di bambinie bambine, rivestendo la carica divicepresidente del leggendario sodalizio dinome Pro Patria... “Guardo, osservo e consiglio.E’ la mia medicina”. Stupefacenti la dinamicitàfisica e mentale, la lucidità, l’entusiasmo e lapassione che ancora dimorano in Savino. <strong>Il</strong>Comitato Olimpico Internazionale lo inviterà aigiochi di Atene 2004 in qualità di più anzianooro olimpico vivente sulla faccia del pianetaTerra.Savino Guglielmetti, tanto attivo nel presentee proiettato, con lo spirito, nel futuro, vogliamochiudere con il ricordo più vivo e antico dellasua Milano? “1915: ero in via Paolo Sarpi conmia madre. Degli aerei austriaci bombardaronohttp://www.ighof.comla zona del Monumentale, dove spiccavano glialtissimifumaioli di una centrale elettrica. Mia madremi nascose nell’androne di un portone. Page 4PiacevoliIncontriI L P O S T I N O July <strong>2003</strong>La PortaDel RicordoCome fa freddo il ricordo,Alla serata d’ apertura dellasettimana italiana sabato 6,giugno, abbiamo dovuto giocare unpo’ alla sedia musicale ma allafine ci siamo trovati ben seduti edin buona compagnia pronti perpassare la serata; desideriamosubito congratulare il comitatoorganizzatore ed il personale dellaSala San Marco per la bellissimaserata.Ben seduti ed in buonacompagnia, dicevo, c’erano iconiugi Panico, Pat Adamo, laProfesoressa Giuliana, unadeliziosa coppia da Montreal, io emia moglie; il signore da Montrealintavola subito una conversazionecon la Profesoressa Giuliana, lelegge qualcosa da un librettobianco che posa poi sul tavologlielo chiedo, me lo passa con uncortese sorriso, era un libretto dipoesie ne scorro unabrevemente, mi piace, mi informoallora chi e’ questo signore dall’affabile personalita’, semplicequasi timido nei gesti e nelcomportamento ma che,conversando, denotava una certaforza e sicurezza, non s’ imponeva,evolveva piuttosto, spiegava eproponeva i suoi pensieri inmaniera semplice, convincente.Solo piu’ tardi, durante la serata hosaputo che questo signore era ElioFrancescuzzi, abruzzese di nascita,che vive a Montreal e che era lui ilvincitore del Premio Letterariodella <strong>Settimana</strong> <strong>Italian</strong>a <strong>2003</strong> conla poesia che vi proponiamo:<strong>Il</strong> <strong>Postino</strong>, certo di far piacere aisuoi lettori, pubblichera’ nelleprossime edizioni, la biografia e lepoesie di Elio Francescuzzi.Emilio Francescucci è nato a Guardiagrele (Chieti, Italia). Ha emigrato in teneraétà in Belgio, poi in Canada. Dopo aver conseguito una laurea in pedagogia pressol’Università di Montréal e poi del Wisconsin ha operato un laboratorio diagnostica diproblemi d’apprendimento. Ha insegnato la pedagogia all’Università del Québec e svoltodelle attività di consulenza presso il Ministero della Publica Istruzione del Québec. He attended theUniversity of Ottawa’s Law School andpracticed law for ten years on CarlingAve. with Bob Chiarelli. He wassubsequently a family court judge for 11years. His most famous case so far hasbeen the Cornwall Inquiry: a case ofconspiracies of sexual abuse involvingyoung boys and the Church. Mr. Guzzodecided to champion this cause mainlybecause of his personal concerns as aCatholic. Although large cases like theCornwall Inquiry make for muchpublicity, attention and a possible book,Gary Guzzo finds the smaller cases moresatisfying. He continued to describeincidences when people would come upto him and thank him for his help, givenyears ago. “Political life is verygratifying”, says Guzzo. Residents ofVilla Marconi are also happy to have himaround, since it was he who securedfunding for the project under the Harrisadministration. He also took part inyouth work programs and positiveoutreach programs. I LP O S T I N OJuly <strong>2003</strong> Page 9Ferrari Fever!by Chiara MingarelliThousands of people crowded Preston St.Saturday afternoon, anticipating the largestFerrari parade ever organized by the <strong>Italian</strong><strong>Week</strong> committee. No one was disappointedwhen it turned out that the 72 luxury vehicleswould not parade around in a normal mundanefashion. This year would be a different kind ofparade! Preston was turned into a race trackand the Ferraris zoomed around at high speeds,showing off the powerful engines of ModenaSpider 360s, F40, 308 & 328 GTS, 355 Spiders,and the list goes on and on. We were alsotreated to other famous sports cars, such as Mr.Karam’s hand made (body kit) Jaguar X200,one of only three in North America. CanadianMotor Sport Hall of Fame veteran David BoonFerrari Fever Hits Preston“...One of the greatfestivals in the NationalCapital Region.”One of the great festivals in the National CapitalRegion.” Other speakers included Marco Colombo,the Ambassador to Canada from Italy.was driving his 1958 Jaguar XK-150, a changefrom the usual open wheel dirt track racers heusually drives. One driver, Leone Eramo, wasfortuate enough to have 2 Ferraris, a Testa Rossaand 328 GTS, in the parade. Other luxury racecars seen racing down Preston were Maseratisand a Formula First race car:”… not to be confusedwith Formula 1” explains 16 year old driverStefany Malanka, who has been racing since shewas eleven!Opening speeches were made by Mayor BobChiarelli, who described <strong>Italian</strong> <strong>Week</strong> as “…He describes Ferraris as “pieces of culture”, andalso said that “Italy is synonymous with Ferrari.”Organizer Enrico Valente also addressed a verypleased crowd and informed them that proceedsfrom the parade were going to the EasterSeals, a charity for disabled children. Other localcelebrities at the race were Wade Reddenand Sarah Jennings.After the laps were completed around PrestonSt., the beautiful machines and their driversmade their way to the <strong>Italian</strong> Embassy witha police escort. There, all the drivers relaxed inthe beautiful gardens of the Ambassador’shome and talked about many upcoming Ferrari(race car) events this summer, including theGrand Prix in Montreal. The lawns were full ofthe fantastic vehicles! It was truly a car-lover’sparadise. The drivers then were escorted by thepolice to the Casino de Lac Leamy for cocktailsand a beautiful four course dinner, with allproceeds being donated to the Easter Seals. .The “Wheels for Easter Seals” fundraiser turnedout to be a huge success, as it raised over$15,000 from the event. This money will helpthe Seals buy wheelchairs and walkers, so thatthey too can feel like Ferrari race car drivers.The evening went off without a hitch, even theweather cooperated! La prima ditante cerimonie è consistita neltrapianto di una bella quercia rossa sulprato antistante il Parlamento. <strong>Il</strong> temadi quest’anno è “Impegno perl’ambiente” e propone l’azioneindividuale e comunitaria per lasoluzione dei problemi ambientali piùscottanti. Tra questi, l’inquinamentoatmosferico e il cambiamentoclimatico sono tra i più urgenti.Dal punto di vista parlamentare èstato un anno importante perl’ambiente. Infatti è stata appenavarata la legge sulle Specie a Rischiointesa a proteggere animali e pianteche rischiano di scomparire e il loroambiente naturale. Sono state poifissate le disposizioni per veicoli ecarburanti per renderli menoinquinanti nei prossimi decenni. <strong>Il</strong>ministero dell’Agricoltura stastudiando la possibilità d’imperniarela legislazione futura sul rispettodell’ambiente. Sono stati creati nuoviparchi e sistemi marini protetti. Adicembre, il Canada ha ratificatol’accordo di Kyoto e il governo hainiziato subito l’opera minuziosa diapplicazione del piano nazionale perreagire al cambiamento climatico.<strong>Il</strong> progresso continua nel <strong>2003</strong> conil bilancio federale che investe duemiliardi di dollari in iniziative a favoredell’ambiente, storicamente il piùgrande stanziamento governativo nelsettore. La legge riconosce lanecessità di eliminare le sostanzetossiche che rimangono a lungonell’ambiente prima di decomporsi edi quelle che si accumulano negliorganismi degli esseri viventi. Dueministeri collaborano, quello dellaSanità e quello dell’Ambiente. <strong>Il</strong> lorocompito è di valutare il potenzialetossico delle varie sostanze chimichee di prendere le misure necessarie perproteggere il pubblico e la natura. Vada sé che la collaborazione tra ilgoverno federale e quelli provincialie territoriali è di primaria importanzaall’applicazione pratica di ogni legge.Inoltre, durante la settimanadedicata all’ambiente, si vuolericonfermare anche la volontà e lapresa di coscienza individuale. Love. They both mean the same thing but the <strong>Italian</strong> version ofthe word love sounds much more exotic. Some words simply sound betterin <strong>Italian</strong>. Marketing people, advertising people, manufacturers, restaurateursand people in the entertainment industry have known this for quitesome time.Take a stroll down the <strong>Italian</strong> food section of any grocery store.You will find “Prego” spaghetti sauce. The literal translation would be “YourWelcome” spaghetti sauce. The “Classico” line of sauces sounds even moreclassic than the “Classic” English name. “Primo pasta” would translate tothe boring “First pasta.” Which <strong>Italian</strong> cheese do you think would taste better,“Tre Stella cheese” or “Three Star cheese?” Which brand of espressocoffee would be more richly <strong>Italian</strong> “Medalia D’Oro” or “Gold Medal?” Menusin an <strong>Italian</strong> restaurant also reflect this phenomenon. “Pasta Carbonatta”made with “pancetta” simply does not sound as appetizing as “Coal MinerPasta” made with “pig belly fat.” Would you rather eat “Oso Buco” or “BoneWith a Hole?” Would you rather order “Pasta Primavera” or “Spring TimePasta?” You may not eat “Pasta Alla Puttanesca” once you know the historyand meaning of the name. The translation is “Prostitutes’ Pasta” and is calledthat because the <strong>Italian</strong> prostitutes would gather for a quick pasta meal andcook up this style of pasta when on a break from doing business. Time fordesert. Some “Tiramisu” sounds more tempting than some “pullmeup.” Carmanufactures are very careful to keep the classic <strong>Italian</strong> names instead ofanglicizing them into the English sounding versions. Surely a “Lamborgini”sounds faster than “Lamburgerin.” People would rather buy a “Ferarri” thana ‘Furairen.” “Maserati” is much better than “Masurate.” Non-<strong>Italian</strong> carmanufacturers also use <strong>Italian</strong> names for their cars. The “Allegra” soundscooler than “Joy Car.” The old “Nova” actually means “New.” I recently wentinto a Starbucks and ordered a “double espresso” and the counter lady correctedme by saying, “You mean a doppio?” I was about to tell her that the“biscotti’ they were selling should really be called “hard biscuits.” The fancy“latte” is really only “milk and coffee.” This “latte” is a trendy thing but everyfirst generation <strong>Italian</strong> kid drank “milk and espresso coffee” when beingintroduced to coffee. I certainly drank it as a kid so it does not really appealto me as an adult. I suggested that the spring water they sell should be called“aqua di sorgente” and the cream cheese they have for the bagels be called“formaggio di crema.” The Starbucks was connected to a Chapters bookstore. I guess the counter lady thought that I was going to buy some <strong>Italian</strong>food when I said, “Ciao, I have to buy some libri.” I was merely saying I wasgoing to buy some books but “books” do not sound as interesting or exoticas “libri.” <strong>Italian</strong> fashion designers would be unrecognizable if they stoppedusing the real <strong>Italian</strong> version of their names. Who would recognize the followingpeople: George Armin, Serge Valent,Versack, Fend, Hugh Boss, Dolcenand Cabin, or Gooch? And what fashion conscious woman would buy “PupaCosmetics” if they used the name “DollMakeup? “In the movie “A Fish CalledWanda” there is a hilarious scene betweenKevin Kline’s character and JamieLee Curtis’ character. The Jamie Leecharacter is very turned on by a manspeaking <strong>Italian</strong>. The Kevin Kline characterobliges her and lets out a streamof nonrelated <strong>Italian</strong> words which includesome pizza menu items. No matter,it sure sounds stimulating to theJamie character and she goes crazy withlust. Opera lovers may not completelyunderstand all the lyrics of an <strong>Italian</strong> operabut perhaps they understand theemotions being expressed in song. If youcompletely translated an <strong>Italian</strong> operaand had an English version performed,it would lose its authentic artistic passion.It simply would not sound as good.When Luciano Pavarotti sings in English,he does not have the same intensity aswhen he sings in his native <strong>Italian</strong>.There is even a very funny episodeof the Bugs Bunny cartoon show with an<strong>Italian</strong> theme. The episode centersaround Christopher Columbus, who actuallywas <strong>Italian</strong>. “Chris” speaks with an<strong>Italian</strong> accent and there are <strong>Italian</strong>phrases thrown out like “pasta andbeans” which comes out as “pastafagiole” in the episode. The real <strong>Italian</strong>nature of the voyage comes out soundingvery funny indeed.“The Godfather” movies are enhancedby the scenes with <strong>Italian</strong> dialogue.The scenes are more authentic,realistic, mysterious and dramatic becauseof the <strong>Italian</strong> dialogue. Real <strong>Italian</strong>mobsters spoke <strong>Italian</strong> and English as theydo in these movies. To have absolutely no<strong>Italian</strong> dialogue in these movies wouldhave made the movies less effective andless credible.In summary, you can see that manythings sure sound better in <strong>Italian</strong>. The <strong>Italian</strong> sideof his family is from Greve in Chianti,in the heart of Tuscany. His monthlyarticle focuses on various aspects ofthe <strong>Italian</strong> wine scene.Super-TuscansAn American journalist coined theterm Super-Tuscan in the late 1970’s.The term originally applied to winesmade in Tuscany, primarily from theFrench varietal Cabernet Sauvignon –the common element in all great Bordeauxwines.The story began in 1942 when an<strong>Italian</strong> nobleman Marquis Mario Incisadella Rocchetta started to experimentwith Cabernet Sauvignon andCabernet Franc on his Tuscan coastalestate near Bolgheri. He was consideredby some purists to be committingviticultural treason, by trying toemulate a Bordeaux wine on <strong>Italian</strong>soil.Great wines come from the poorestsoils and this is the case in the topBordeaux estates of Graves (meaning“gravel” – in the same way as the regionof Grave does in Friuli). The Marquisemulated these conditions byplanting the two “Cabs” in a sectionof his estate named Sassicaia - “rockyroad” in the Tuscan dialect; the nowfamous region and wine of the samename (“sa-ssy-kaya”).For nearly three decades his unusualTuscan wine was just sold andconsumed locally (as, regrettably aremany great <strong>Italian</strong> wines). Note, the latter two could useat least 3 years of careful aging to startto express their true potential. Forthose who wish to drink them now,be sure to open and decant severalhours prior to drinking.On the Quebec side there is a fairselection, with some overlap withLCBO offerings. Soon to arrive is thelatest Prunaio (“pru-na-yo”). This willbe the 1999 vintage, which receivedthe “three goblet” award in theGambero Rosso (the <strong>Italian</strong> wine “bible”).The prestigious rating putsPrunaio firmly in the top 150 wines inItaly. This Super-Tuscan is from a smallproducer in the Chianti Classico region,named Viticcio (“vee-titch –oh”).The wine is made from a refined cloneof the Sangiovese grosso grape, similarto the prestigious Brunello grapefrom the Montalcino region (SAQcode: 896795, price: circa $49). Anicely oaked, very rich and complexwine, which will also improve withsimilar aging or preparation as theBanfi wines.Next month, by popular request,Grappas (distilled grape must) will bein the spotlight. IL POSTINOFesta Di Sant’ AntonioSaint Anthony’s FestivalBy Chiara MingarelliHundreds of people crowded St. Anthony’s Church Sunday June 8 th for the annual St. Anthony’s Festival. The Church has grown much since the MostRev. J. T. Duhamel, Archbishop of Ottawa, granted the members of a small <strong>Italian</strong> community the use of a chapel on Murray St. in 1908. St. Anthony’s churchwas actually completed November 3 rd 1913. The original building was small but had much room for expansion. After a fire in 1917, Prato born artist, architectand painter Guido Nincheri was called upon to help restore the church. He painted the beautiful frescos, including the famous depiction of the seven HolyFounders of the Servants of Mary (Order of Servites). Nincheri was later known as the “Canadian Michelangelo”, and has painted frescos in 98 churches acrossCanada. He was also commissioned to make most of the stained glass windows at St. Anthony’s. However, time has taken it’s toll on one particular stainedglass depiction of Mary and Joseph on a donkey. The donkey looks like it has two bellies, due to the old glass buckling after some time. Things do not appearto be in need of immediate restoration, however the time may be coming soon.The traditional outdoor mass started off the annual event, followed by the famous parade twisting and turning the streets of Ottawa. Beautiful multicolouredflags waved side to side high up in the air for all to see, as the faithful took to the streets. The Ottawa Fire Department’s band headed off the parade thisyear in their beautiful red uniforms. Young and old, all were dressed in their finest attire as they sang and danced, then ate in little Italy. Even Jim Watson couldnot resist the smell of pasta at the women’s auxiliary. This is his 10 th year coming, and he continues to come, as he admires the “Great sense of community”here in little Italy. Paul Martin, Bob Chiarelli and Ambassador Colombo and family all attended the event as well. “It’s a beautiful tradition”, said AntonellaPapalia, a local entrepreneur.
