Someone has called it the last frontier for green building;
there is no doubt that this extraordinary construction
system, created in the heart of the Black Forest, with a
linear and clean design, entirely made of solid wood, with
no visible pegs or screws, gives a feeling of harmony,
solidity and quietness. Several layers of this natural
material are overlapped, without using glues, chemical
treatments or nails: they are joined together by solid
beech wood screws which guarantee perfect bracing and
an outstanding load-bearing capacity, making it possible
to build completely safe multi-storey buildings.
This «multi-layer» structure, with billions of wood cells
in each cubic centimetre, boasts an amazing thermal
capacity, top-of-the-range technical and mechanical
performances, such as high resistance to fire, screening
against electrosmog, and natural transpiration which
results in its marked hygroscopic features.

Jemand hat es als die letzte Hürde im ökologischen
Bau bezeichnet – sicher ist, dass dieses einzigartige
Bausystem mit dem linearen und sauberen Design,

in mehreren miteinander verbundenen Schichten
aufeinandergestapelt, ohne dass hierzu Klebstoffe,

Stattdessen werden die Schichten durch Schrauben
aus massiver Buche zusammengehalten, die einen
perfekten Verband und eine sehr hohe Tragfähigkeit
garantieren, so dass auch mehrstöckige Gebäude sicher
errichtet werden können. Dieser “mehrschichtige” Bau mit
Milliarden an Holzzellen pro Kubikzentimeter profitiert von
einer unglaublichen Wärmekapazität, einer extrem hohen
technischen und mechanischen Leistung, einer hohen
Feuerbeständigkeit, einem guten Schutz vor Elektrosmog
und einer natürlichen Atmung, was ihm herausragende
hygroskopische Eigenschaften verleiht.

Walls, lofts and roofs are made of multi-layer wood panels
whose vertical and horizontal risers are laid in a continuous
way and without gaps: threaded bars of beech wood, with
a 20 mm diameter, completely penetrate the structures,
merging with the surrounding wood and holding it firmly
together. The panel thickness varies: 9.5 cm, 12.5 cm, 13.5
cm, 15.5 cm, 18.5 cm, 20.5 cm, 21.5 cm, 24.0 cm, 26.0
cm, 30.5 cm, 35.0 cm. The 17.9 cm, 20.8 cm and 25.0
cm standard flat horizontal partitions (lofts) can have up to 6
m clear span, while the sloping partitions (roofs) thickness
range is 16.0 cm, 17.9 cm, 18.5 cm, 20,8 cm, 25 cm.
WAND, DECKEN, DACH
Wände, Decken und Dächer bestehen aus
Mehrschichtholzplatten, deren Stützen und Träger
durchgehend und ohne Nutverbindungen eingesetzt werden:
Gewindestangen aus Buchenholz mit einem Durchmesser
von 20 mm durchdringen die Strukturen komplett, gehen
praktisch nahtlos ins angrenzende Holz über und verbinden
es fest. Die Platten sind unterschiedlich dick: 9,5 cm, 12,5
cm, 13,5 cm, 15,5 cm, 18,5 cm, 20,5 cm, 21,5 cm, 24,0
cm, 26,0 cm, 30,5 cm, 35,0 cm. Die flachen horizontalen
Standardunterteilungen (Decken) von 17,9 cm, 20,8 cm
und 25,0 cm können bis zu 6 m lichte Weite aufweisen,
während die schrägen Unterteilungen (Abdeckungen) 16,0
cm, 17,9 cm, 18.5 cm, 20,8 cm, 25 cm dick sind.

ONLY THE BEST WOOD
The wood we use comes only from PEFC (Programme
for Endorsement of Forest Certification) conifers in the
Schwarzwald. The preservation and stability of this material
are ensured by a working process based on felling mature
trees in the right vegetation condition during the wintertime
in the forest, and on subsequent long drying periods during
which the trunks lose sugar and starch, which means that they
cannot be attacked by fungi or insects. Each phase in this
process requires strict compliance with lengthy schedules,
involving high management and procurement difficulties; the
product obtained, however, is outstanding: it is wood in the
strict sense of the word, without any chemicals such as glues
or impregnating paint, offering the best of its unique features,
which are not known to everybody.

zertifizierten Nadelbäumen aus dem Schwarzwald. Die
Haltbarkeit und Stabilität des Materials werden durch den
Verarbeitungsprozess garantiert, der auf dem Fällen der reifen
Bäume im angemessenen vegetativen Zustand während
der Winterzeit und einer anschließenden langen Trocknung
basiert, bei dem dem Stamm Zucker und Stärke entzogen
werden, so dass Pilze und Insekten ihn nicht mehr angreifen
können. Bei jeder Phase dieses Verarbeitungsprozesses
müssen die langen erforderlichen Zeiten eingehalten und nicht
zu unterschätzende Schwierigkeiten bei der Handhabung und
Anlieferung bewältigt werden. Das Endprodukt ist jedoch von
herausragender Qualität – Holz im weitesten Sinne dieses
Wortes, ohne jegliche Chemikalien wie Klebstoffe oder
Imprägnierlacke, das auf gänzlich natürliche Weise seine
besten, oft kaum bekannten Eigenschaften bietet.

Le bois utilisé provient exclusivement de conifères PEFC
(Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification: un
programme international de gestion durable de la forêt) de la
Schwarzwald - La Forêt Noire. La préservation et la stabilité
de ce matériau sont garanties par un processus de travail
fondé sur l’abattage d’arbres matures dans un état végétatif
approprié, pendant la période hivernale de la forêt et un long
séchage ultérieur qui prive les troncs de sucre et d’amidon,
ce qui les rend résistants aux champignons et aux insectes.
Chaque étape de ce processus exige le strict respect de
longs délais, comporte de grandes difficultés de gestion et
d’approvisionnement, mais le produit obtenu est remarquable;
c’est le bois dans son acception la plus noble, dépourvu
de toute substance chimique, tels que colles ou vernis
imprégnés, prêt à offrir, d’une manière tout à fait naturelle, le
meilleur de ses caractéristiques parfois mal connues.
SOLO IL LEGNO MIGLIORE
Il legno utilizzato proviene unicamente da conifere PEFC
(Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification) della
Schwarzwald. La preservazione e la stabilità di questo
materiale sono garantiti da un processo lavorativo basato
sull’abbattimento di alberi maturi nello stato vegetativo adatto,
nel periodo invernale del bosco e da una successiva lunga
essiccazione che priva i tronchi dello zucchero e dell’amido,
rendendoli inattaccabili da funghi e insetti.
Ciascuna fase di questo processo operativo richiede il rigido
rispetto di lunghe tempistiche, comporta elevate difficoltà di
gestione e approvvigionamento, ma il prodotto ottenuto è
eccezionale, è il legno nella sua accezione più ampia, privo
di qualsivoglia sostanza chimica, come possono essere i
collanti o le vernici impregnanti, pronto ad offrire, in modo
completamente naturale, il meglio delle sue peculiarità, a volte
poco conosciute.

THE PRODUCTION LINE
Holdersbach, Schwarzwald, Germany: this is where
our structures are produced, in the historical Rombach
factory, established as far back as 1934.
Our production chain covers large areas inside the
Black Forest, which allows us to manage all processing
phases in-house, through highly skilled co-workers
who carefully select the raw material, which will then
be processed in protected and controlled rooms using
cutting-edge technologies, designed on purpose and
constructed ad hoc.
The shift from architectonic to executive design
requires a close-knit staff of engineers, draftsmen and
carpenters who make ideas and projects come true by
using state-of-the-art software to prepare structural and
static calculations, 3D projections and machine data for
production.
DIE PRODUKTIONSLINIE
Holdersbach, Schwarzwald, Deutschland – hier am
geschichtsträchtigen Sitz von Rombach, der 1934 gegründet
wurde, werden unsere Strukturen hergestellt. Eine auf großen
Flächen des Schwarzwaldes weit verstreute Produktionskette
ermöglicht es uns, sämtliche Phasen der Verarbeitung
intern mit professionell sehr gut ausgebildetem Personal
vorzunehmen, das die Rohstoffe sorgfältig auswählt, die
anschließend mit fortschrittlichen, einzig zu diesem Zwecke
entworfenen und umgesetzten Technologien in einer
geschützten und überwachten Umgebung verarbeitet werden.
Die Umwandlung vom architektonischen zum Feinentwurf
erfolgt mithilfe eines eingespielten Teams an Ingenieuren,
Designern und Zimmerern, die den Ideen und Projekten
Ausdruck verleihen, indem sie mit hochmodernen Softwares
strukturelle und statische Berechnungen vornehmen und
3D-Projektionen und Maschinendaten für die Produktion
auswerten.
LA LIGNE DE PRODUCTION
Holdersbach, Schwarzwald (Forêt Noire), Allemagne :
c’est là qu’à lieu la production de nos structures, au siège
historique de la maison fondée il ya bien longtemps, à
Rombach, en 1934. Une filière de production déployée
sur de vastes zones au sein de la Forêt Noire permet de
gérer en interne toutes les phases de la fabrication, avec
un personnel hautement qualifié opérant une sélection
rigoureuse des matières premières qui seront ensuite
traitées dans un environnement protégé et contrôlé
au moyen de technologies de pointe, spécialement
conçues et réalisées dans ce but. La métamorphose
qui s’opère de la conception architecturale à la mise en
œuvre passe par un personnel très soudé d’ingénieurs,
de dessinateurs, de menuisiers qui donnent corps aux
idées et aux projets en effectuant au moyens de logiciels
à la pointe de la modernité des calculs structurels et
statiques, des projections 3D et des données destinées
à la machine pour la production.

avviene la produzione delle nostre strutture, presso la
storica sede della Rombach, fondata nel lontano 1934.
Una filiera produttiva dislocata su vaste aree all’interno della
Foresta Nera consente di gestire internamente tutte le fasi
di lavorazione, attraverso collaboratori altamente preparati,
che attuano una meticolosa selezione della materia prima,
che verrà successivamente lavorata in ambienti protetti
e controllati per mezzo di tecnologie all’avanguardia
appositamente progettate e realizzate ad hoc.
La trasformazione del disegno da architettonico ad
esecutivo passa attraverso uno staff affiatato di ingegneri,
disegnatori, carpentieri che danno corpo a idee e progetti
elaborando con modernissimi software calcoli strutturali e
statici, proiezioni in 3D e dati macchina per la produzione.

THE BLACK FOREST
This original and disquieting name dates back to the Roman
age: in Latin it was known first as Marciana Silva and then as
Silva Nigra, because its vegetation consisted of dark green
trees, so thick that it was impossible for sunrays to shine
through. Our wood is sourced from a 160 square-kilometre area
of land straddling the borders of three countries: Switzerland,
France and Germany. The whole area is characterised by
hills, woods, pastures, wide valleys, small lakes, waterfalls
and picturesque villages. The green countryside stretches to
the horizon, dominated by conifer woods, which are seen as
both a resource and a proud heritage to nurture and preserve
for the future. Forestry in these woods is carried out in close
harmony with nature, with the aim of producing the highest
quality timber and conserving the heritage of the forest
through the promotion of its natural dynamic processes.

LA FORÊT-NOIRE
C’est le lieu d’où provient/d’origine de notre matière première,
le bois. Son nom caractéristique et étrange/inquiétant lui a été
attribué à l’époque romaine: en latin, elle a été d’abord appelé
Marciana Silva et ensuite Silva Nigra, depuis sa végétation a
été caractérisée par des arbres vert sombre plantés de façon
si dense qu’ils ne permettent pas aux rayons du soleil de
passer. Son territoire s’étend sur 160 kilomètres carrés, dans
lesquels se développent/prennent place des tronçons/parties
de frontière de trois pays: la Suisse, la France et l’Allemagne.
Toute la région se caractérise par des collines, des forêts,
des prairies, des vallées, de petits lacs, des cascades et de
charmants villages. Le vert va au-delà de l’horizon et domine
les forêts de conifères qui sont considérées en même
temps comme une ressource et un patrimoine à protéger.
La sylviculture aujourd’hui, pratiqué dans cette zone est très
proche de la nature, et est axé sur la nécessité de produire
du bois d’excellente qualité et sur la préservation des forêts,
par le biais de l’augmentation des processus dynamiques
naturels qui s’y produisent.

Der charakteristische und beunruhigende Name wurde dem
Schwarzwald zu römischen Zeiten gegeben: auf Lateinisch
wurde er zunächst Marciana Silva und dann Silva Nigra

E’ il luogo di provenienza della nostra materia prima, il legno.
Il suo nome caratteristico e inquietante le fu attribuito in epoca
romana: in latino, era stata chiamata dapprima Marciana Silva
e poi Silva Nigra, poiché la sua vegetazione era caratterizzata
da alberi di colore verde scuro talmente fitti da non lasciar
passare i raggi del sole. Il territorio ha un estensione di 160
chilometri quadrati, nei quali si sviluppano parte dei confini
di ben tre stati: Svizzera, Francia e Germania. L’intera zona
è caratterizzata dalla presenza di colline, boschi, pascoli,
vallate, piccoli laghi, cascate e romantici villaggi. Il verde va
oltre l’orizzonte e dominano i boschi di conifere che sono

La silvicoltura odierna, praticata in questa zona è molto vicina
alla natura, ed è orientata all’esigenza di produrre legno di

known as “moon wood”, namely timber from trees which
have been felled following the procedures described
above and during the right lunar phases; this means that
the trees are felled only on waning moon dates according
to the forestry calendar. This timber has even better

hardness and resistance to parasites, and is available
while annual stocks last.
