Birth, and even more rebirth, imply that something is or must be changed, or<br />

has been abandoned, is "dead to what was" and has become something new.<br />

As the chrysalis is the possibility of becoming a butterfly, so is the rebirth a<br />

re-emergence to life with a different feeling.<br />

The jisei, a farewell poem composed in the imminence of death, being the<br />

last one has a particular importance, distilling in a few words the essence of a<br />

life:<br />

手 に 結 ぶ 水 に 宿 れる 月 影 のあるかなきかの 世 にこそありけれ<br />

Te ni musubu mizu ni yadoreru tsukikage no aru ka naki ka no yo nikoso<br />
