guerra mondiale nonostante fossero già in uso i radar.
The oneiric atmospheres of Angela Pellicanò
Between paintings and sculptures, the new works conceptualized for the Parisian
setting represent the natural evolution of the journey on which the artist has been
embarking for about a decade. The concocted themes and elements refer to the
historical events linked to the oppression and to the ethicalsocial decay of totalitarian
regimes, especially that of the Italian Fascist period.
The conceived pictorial artworks delineate a fantastic imagination immersed in a
gloomy and obnubilated environment. The rarefied landscapes, depicted by the artist,
are the result of a fragmented vision of facts and places, redesigned over time and
recomposed anachronistically on the canvas. This work of assembling forms and
contents evokes the moment just right after awaking from sleep, that precise moment
in which our consciousness borders between slumber and wakefulness.
The nature imprinted on the canvas appears imposing. It unfolds on several layers
giving a feeling of depth of perspective and remoteness between the different visual
planes. But the standpoint is never discontinuous; on the contrary, a sense of unity is
perceived due to the liquidity and gravity of the atmospheres that assert themselves in
the composition. The interaction of the drips of color on the subjects and the figures
alludes to certain stylistic solutions of Cy Twombly's cycle of paintings, « The Roses »,
a tribute by the American artist to the symbolist poet Rainer Maria Rilke. And the
symbolist poetry is also present in these works, in which key figures appear, every now
and then, as ecstatic visions and phantasmagoric presences that reside in the intimacy
of the artist.
Whereas in the sculptural works, the artist ironizes the now obsolete military
instruments used by the fascist hierarchy, deforming the subjects and highlighting their
uselessness. Specifically, the artist reinvents and redesigns the aerophones, military
instruments that were used to detect the nearing of enemy airplanes thanks in part to
the help of blind personnel (i.e., exploiting their enhanced hearing capabilities). This
instrumentation was used during the Second World War although radars were already
in use.
The controlled actionpainting, the collage, the dreamlike forms and the liquid matter
continue to permeate the visual and mental fields of this artist, always ready to renew
herself in her expressive choices, while remaining constantly recognizable in the
characteristic language that does not abandon the empathic involvement of herself and
that of the observer.
l'observateur.
proprio sé e i propri limiti organici.
advent of justice that il Duce has, for many years,
announced and to which, infallibly, his genius
(excerpt from the regime propaganda of 1939)
When the regime discovered the posthuman.
In 1939, a law, commissioned by Mussolini himself, allowed 832 blind people, mostly
veterans of the "Great War", to enlist in the AntiAircaft Militia and in the Coastal
Artillery, to work, thanks to their enhanced hearing capabilities, in the aerophones’
post: namely, two enormous metallic "ears" mounted on revolving supports which,
conveying and amplifying the sounds emitted by the engines of the enemy airplanes,
allowed the listening operators to determine their distance and their direction. Thus,
while the other combatants invested resources in the improvement of
electromagnetic wave technologies (radar), the fascist regime created a hybrid being
made of flesh and metal.
A medical report of the time describes the sonorous visions that the roar of the
planes produced in the imagination of the "listening sentinels": a sort of code made
up of colored spots and shapes. Real "subjective sounds" that break through the
usual sensorial and experiential limits, recreating soundscapes represented by
distorted shapes and shades of color.
One more step into the further reality, the result of the new capabilities of a body that
abandons its biology and evolves thanks to technology, going beyond its own self
and its own organic limits.
