BURLESQUE

HOW IS BURLESQUE

BORN?

Burlesque is born from dance but is then enriched

by other artistic forms to express sensuality,

lightness, fun, irony, parody. If you are

thinking of a theme for a party or initiative

that you want to organize, this of Burlesque

can turn out to be a lucky choice, which will

surely involve everyone in its explosive charge!

Even the most timid ...! But it is women,

the object of seduction, the real protagonists

of Burlesque.

What does Burlesque mean?

It is a French word that clearly recalls the

adjective “burlesque” referring to a “joke”, or

playful joke. The etymology takes us back to

the Latin word “burella”, which meant a trap to

capture wild animals.

The burlesque style was born in England, at the

end of the 1800s, and inspired so many musicals,

theatrical performances, films, as far as it

could, not least the fantastic Moulin Rouge.

But what is burlesque?

We could say, indeed let’s say it, that in the

burlesque is concentrated all the feminine

charge translated into parody in very particular

shows, which have a short duration and are

characterized by many aspects, which make

these performances also imaginative and dreamlike.

Thus the burlesque was born precisely to amuse,

as a show with an ironic aftertaste, which

makes fun of the better-off classes, the aristocracy

and the great entrepreneurs, shaking

hands with the most humble people.

At the center of the burlesque there are

simple plots, spicy and sensual ballets, a lot

of music, in a context that we could define as

‘affected’, and that plays on the dichotomy of

irony and sensuality.

Initially, burlesque provokes the spirits that

find it irreverent, like any form of art that sails

against the tide, after all, but soon manages to

be appreciated by the general public, opening

the way to Broadway. So the United States becomes

the homeland of this form of art, which

sees beautiful half-naked dancers having fun

and amusement on the stages of packed theaters.

A characteristic of burlesque artists is their

eclectic nature, because they know how to

combine dance, theater, irony and expressiveness.

And we find these peculiarities all at the

highest levels in women like Immodesty Blaze,

Dita Von Teese, Eve la Plume.

Lightness and sophistication, as well as exhibitionism,

Burlesque stages shows dressed up

with all these ingredients, as well as sensual

and mischievous entertainments, partial strips

dressed with parody, and which undoubtedly

give shape to a woman!

In recent times, burlesque fashion has taken

hold inspiring theatrical performances, cinema

films, but also musical performances, dance

and clothing.

Two great women of cinema - Cher and Cristina

Aguilera - have acted in the musical “Burlesque”

(2011) where Dita Von Teese, contemporary

icon of Burlesque, also performs.
