Aesthetic philosophy teaches us that art is always the mirror of the soul of the artist and daughter of histime. This statement, akin to Friedrich Schiller’s aesthetic theses, takes on particular importance in thedeep immersion in the works of the photographer Enza De Paolis. The analysis of her latest shots is anexperience that belongs to the world of emotions and to comparison with ourselves. Enza with herphotographic lens transmits her message by drawing from the soul and bringing it to the surface by layingbare, revealing her sensitivity and creativity to the world. In contemporary art, it is well known, the role ofthe concept is often much higher than the search for expressive beauty, harmony and poetry, it is not sofor Enza De Paolis that feels the grace as one of the dominant characteristics of her aesthetic expression .The artistic gesture in this context is like a liberation that Enza concretizes through the comparison withherself and the realization of a photographic research that takes place within a framework of positivity.“The skies, under which you are, are changing, but not your inner situation, since the things you aretrying to escape from, are with you” said Seneca speaking of serenity, and this is precisely the point fromwhich the photographer’s creative investigation flows . The works that we have admired in galleries andmuseums all over Italy tell a path where nothing is random, everything that was created contains theprevious story and is built on it. All the baggage of positive or painful experiences are an integral part oftoday’s expressive lyric, that’s why, the whole photographic path of the artist, can be considered coherent, even in her now widely reached artistic maturity. These reflections also include the analysis declined in the mythological contrast of chaos and the cosmos.Like two eternal feelings, opposed to each other and in balance, the search for order and theunquestionable charm of disorder. That chaos from which the cosmos was born, as a beneficial force capable of contrasting and balancinghumanity in search of harmony so that it does not get lost in disorder. In all of this, Enza De Paolis, captures from her inner tensions a creative fer ment that implodes in the form of art, fueling the dialoguebetween poetry and photography. Today the artist continues on her path of reflection and research, evolving and expanding her expressive alphabet and arriving at new artistic creations where waiting, solitude and hope are reflected in the water, a symbolic element of the principle of all things, untilreaching heaven in the sign of a true rebirth. An upward projection as a metaphor for a spiritual elevationfrom earthly torments. As in the first canto of Paradise, in the Divine Comedy, Beatrice explains to Dantethe natural going towards the sky, towards the light, in a pre-established order. In the order which I amsaying all natures are inclined, for different fates, more at the beginning than they are, and least of all;waves move to different ports ... Water as nourishment of all things, mother and generation principle(according to Thales’ Cosmology), primary element, not by chance, in the majority of Enza De Paolis’works. 2020 will be remembered as the dramatic year in which humanity had to remain confined withinits home walls, an oxymoron that sees man hidden by external torments and therefore forced to deal withhimself.A moment in which the reflected image of a mirror can be uncomfortable.Enza De Paolis, has not shied away from confrontation and has managed to bring out, from the reflectionof the water, the depth of human loneliness, a silence amplified by the expectation of a rebirth that willhappen soon for those who will have the courage to meet themselves .The artist is endowed with a unique introspective sensitivity, combined with a strong lyricism with poeticand silent tones as opposed to a world that, instead, tends to scream to attract attention to itself.“Waiting”, “Solitude”, “Hope”, and “Rebirth” are not only the last four works of the photographer at themoment, but a precise path of this time, a path of awareness and poetics rising towards the light that sheunderlines in the titles and describes in the sound of her verses. The new expressive path of Enza De Paolisis therefore a further particularly significant step forward because it manages to renew itself while notbetraying the philosophy that has fueled her entire creative history, a sign that certifies a search for qualitythat continues with strength, the energy and passion of all time.(Alberto Moioli)
